The present invention relates to meansor stopping the feed of paper sheets when an excessive number are simultaneouslvdelivercd to the conveying apparatus.

of the arm 20.V The passage of the peripheral edge of the detector 43 is" such that one sheet of paper can pass from the pile 6 to the conveyor 7 over the roller 8 and beneath the detector 43 without engaging said peripheral edge. This can be accomplished by adjusting the screw to elevate. or depress the pivot 38 on which the detector is carried. If, however, two or more sheets should simultaneously pass over the roller 8, the detector will be engaged by the upper sheet and caused to be turned thereby. This initial movement is free so that it will gain momentum, but when `the endfof the slot 44 strikes the pin 42a, the upper end ofthe arm 39 will be swung rearwardly, thus elevating the screw 41 out of the notch 42, releasing the rock shaft 15 andpermitting the head 23 to drop either onto the'conveyor 7 or on the excessive sheets carried thereby. .These sheets are therefore stopped. At the same time, the forward movement of the pin 42 y by thedetector causes the forwardmove# ment of the link 44, arm 13 and closure valve12. Thus the vent 11 is opened and suctionthrough thel conduit 10 is relieved by saidvent. Theresult is that the suction roller 9'is made inoperative.
Cooperating with the roller 8 are presser rollers 47.V These rollers are journaled on the free ends of; `arms 48 that are rotatably supported on the rock shaft 15. As shown, the journaled ends of the arms 48 are bifurcated as shown at 49, and in said bifurca tions are placed collars `50 secured to the shaft 15 by set screws 51. The collars have .pins 52 that are adapted to abut- Vagainst the undersides of the arms.
This structure. it will be noted therefore, permits the Arollers 47 toY coact with the shaft 8, andjto have limited play. When, however, the rock shaft 15 turns to permit the head 23 to drop. the arms 48 are swung upwardly by .reason of the pins 52 striking said arms and thusnthe Arollers 47 are elevated,relieving the sheets from being pressed upon the roller 8 and thus permitting the stopping of said sheets without stopping the roller 8;
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described inventionwill be apparent to those skilled in the art, wit-l1- out further description, and it willibeunderstood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 1
VWhat I claim is:
1. The combination with sheet conveying means, of a` sheet stop movable from an inactive position to a position vto engage and hold sheets carried bytheconveying means,
a detent detachably engaging the stop for cessive number of sheets carried by the conveying means and having a slot, and a de vice for `operating the detent to release the stop, said device having` a portion located in the slotfand adapted to beengaged and operated by the detector.
3. The4 combination with sheet ,conveying means,` of a sheet stop having a pivotal mounting and adapted to engage and hold sheets carried by the conveyingvmeans, a swinging detent that engages the stop to hold it in its inactive position, an actuating arm connected to the detent and having a pin, and an oscillatory detector having a slot in which the pin is engafed.
4, The combination with sheet conveyingr means, of a rock shaft thereover, a swinging stop lever carried by the rock shaft and and a detector mounted on said pivot and having a slot in which the pin is engaged.
5. The combination with sheet conveying means, of a rock'shaft thereover, a swinging stop lever carried by the rock shaft and extending on opposite sides of the same, a sheet stop finger yieldingly mounted on one arm, a swinging pivot mounting, means for adjusting said mounting, a pivot carried by the mounting, a second lever on the pivot havingan arm provided with a detent engaging the other arm of the stop lever to that-carrying the stop finger, the other arm of the second lever having a pin, and a detector mounted on said pivot and having a slot in which the pin is engaged.
,6. The combination with sheet'conveying means including a roller, of a pressure roller coactinar with said sheet conveying roller means including` a roller, of a pressure roller coacting with said sheet conveying roller and movable toward and from the same, a sheet stop movable into a position to engage and hold sheets carried by the co1iveyor, a detent for holding the stop out of such position and holding the pressure roller in coaction with the conveyor roller, and means operated by a plurality of sheets for moving the detent to permit the stop to move to its active position and the pressure roller to move to its inactive position.
8. The combination with sheet conveying means including a roller, of a rock shaft above the conveying means, a pressure roller having a mounting on the shaft and normally cooperating with the conveyor roller, a sheet stop also having a mounting on the rock shaft and normally out of the path of the sheets moved by the conveyor, and means including a detector operated by an excessive number of sheets for moving the rock siiaft to move the pressure roller out of coaction with the conveyor roller and move the stop into a position to engage the excessive sheets.
9. The combination with sheet conveying means including a roller, of a rock shaft above the conveying means, an arm carried by the rock shaft and projecting beyond one side of the same, a pressure roller on the arm and normally cooperating with the conveyor roller but movable away from the sameon the rotation of the rock shaft, another arm carried by the rock shaft and projecting from the opposite side thereof, a sheet stop carried by the latter arm and .movable toward the conveying means when the pressure roller is moved away from the.
conveyor roller, a detent for holding the rock shaft with the stop elevated and the roller lowered, and a device operated by an excessive number of sheets and operating the detent.

swinging support, means for holding theV support in different positions, a detent journaled on the support and operating to hold the rock shaft against turning, a suction conduit for the suction roller having a vent, a movable closure for the vent, a connection between the closure and the detent, a swinging detector journaled on the support and having a slot, and a pin carried by the detent and engaged in the slot.
13. In sheet feeding means, a movable sheet carrying member, of a roller normally coacting Wit-h the member andmovable to a position out of coaction therewith, an operating device for moving the roller out of such coacting relation, a detent detachably engaging the operating device to,l hold it aga-inst action, and a device operated by an excessive number of sheets for moving the detent to release the operating device and permit it to effect the interruption of the feeding operation. i
