Application nled January 29, 1926. Serial No. 84,597.
My invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to a wrench that is adapted to grip round headed bolts, screws, or similar members that either originally were rounded or that lost their polygonal shape due to hard usage.
It is a purpose of my invention to provide a socket wrench that is adapted to remove or put in position screws, bolts or similar members having heads that are not provided with suiciently flattened faces to be turned by means of an ordinary socket wrench and which is adapted to be used in extremely small spaces.` The invention acordingly contemplates providing a wrench that is extremely compact and preferably also extemely simple in construction.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings proceeds. However, I desire to have it` distinctly understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the exact details shown or described, but that I intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall within the scope of the claim.

Fig. 1 is a side elevation partly in'section of my improved wrench; and Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, my improved wrench comprises a body portion 5 which is shown as being made up of two substantially cup shaped members 6 and 7 held .together by means of the bolts or other fastening members 8 and providing a chamber 9 within the same. Each of the members 6 and 7 is provided with an opening 10 which openings 10 align when the parts are in assembled relation and in which the shaft member 11- is journaled. Said 'shaft member 11 forms the shank portion of the tool and is provided at the outer end thereof with a cross piece or handle 12. Formed on or secured on shaft 11 in any desired manner so as to rotate therewith, is a cam member 13 l which has a generally cylindrical outline and whose center of. curvature is eccentric to the axis ofthe shaft 11. The member 13 is provided with a plurality of serrations or teeth 14 running parallel to the axis of the shaft 11 on the portion thereof that is spaced the furthest away from the axis of the shaft 11 as will be evident from Fig. 2.

It will be noted that the outer portions of the walls of openings 16 form extensions of the walls of the-extensions 15. The Wall of the socket thus formed opposite the communicating opening between the chamber 9 and the openings 16 is provided with teeth or serrations 17 which also extend substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft l1.
In operation the handle 12 is turned so that the shaft 11 is in such a position that the toothed portion 14 of the member 13 is out of alignment with the openings 16, and a headed fastening member that cannot be gripped by an ordinary socket wrench such as the bolt or screw 18 having `a rounded head 19, is then engaged by the'wrench by passing the socket portion of the wrench over the head 19. Then the handle portion 12 is turned rotating the cam member 13 until the teeth 14 firmly engage with the head 19 thus gripping the head 19, the toothed portion 14 and the toothed portion 17 preventing rotation of the wrench on the head of the fasteningmember that it is desiredto turn. Further rotation of the handle 12 thenturns the member 18 in the desired direction. It is obvious that the handle can be rotated in either direction to engage the cam with the headed fastening or other screw-threaded member that is to be turned, the cam 13 being rotatable entirely around the axis of the4 shaft 11 in the chamber 9 so that no matter what the osition thereof may be by placing the wrenc over the member that is to be turned, and rotating the handle 12 in the 4direction, that it is desired to turn the screw-threaded member, the cam 13 will first move into engagement with said member that is to be rotated and will then turn the same as stated above.
