DYNAMO-ELECTRIC MACHINE.

This invention relates to the construction of the field-frame and the-housing of a small electric motor or generator. In such machines. it is common to make the field-magnet of punched laminae, more or less enclosed between and supported by heads or housing-members of cast metal.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of machines of the type just described, more particularly with respect to simplicity of construction, ease in assembling and rigid and accurate alignment of the field-frame and the bearings which support the armature-shaft.
To the foregoing ends the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as it isdefined in the attached claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the field-structure and frame of an electric motor embodying the present invention, and Fig. 2 is an end-view of the same, with one end-member removed.
In the illustrated embodiment of the in vention the field-magnet is built up of a se-- 'ries of sheet-steel punchings or laminae 3, having the form usual in a two-pole motor. The number of poles is not material to the invention. These punchings are perforated to receive two studs 4, which are knurled and are pressed tightly into the perforations, so as to secure the punchings firmly together.

determine their position accurately. For further security, rivets 6 may also be used to fasten the laminae at points remote from the studs.
The laminae and the studs are permanently attached to one end-frame or head 7 of the machine. For this purpose this frame is molded about the lamina: and the ends of the and comprises two cylindrically formed housing-members 8 which embrace the laminae on opposite sides. To insure and maintain rigid connection between the parts, the laminae are provided with dove,- tail-shaped projections 9 which are embedded in the cast metal.
.The opposite head 10 is a separate casting, and it is provided with housing-members 11 which engage the members 8 at a shouldered joint 12, which insures correct alignment of the two heads. The parts are removably secured together by screws 13 threaded into holes in the ends of the studs 4;. The armature-shaft bearings 14 are mounted in the heads in the usual manner.
The housing-members 8 and 11 are shown as only partial cylindrical shells, which is an expedient adopted in some cases to attain a minimum width of the motor in one direction. Altho this form of housing-member is relatively weak in itself, the keying of the housing-members to the field-frame by the cast-in projections 9 supports the members 8 and makes the structure very rigid and secure as a whole, while the members 11 are prevented from spreading by their shouldered engagement at 12 with the members 8. For complete enclosure of the armature and brushes the fiat open sides may be closed by covers 15 of thin sheet-material, as shown at one side in Fig. 2.

,The invention claimed is:
1. A dynamo-electric machine comprising: a laminated field-core with a cylindrically-curved peripheral portion provided with under-cut abutment-s; an end-frame comprising a housing-member cast upon said peripheral portion of the field-core, and provided with a circularly-curved shouldered edge; acsecond end-frame having a. circularly-curved edge fitting against the edge of the first end-frame; and fasteningmeans passing through the field laminae and connecting the end-frames.

A dynamo-electric machine comprising: a laminated field-core with two opposite cylindrically curved peripheral "portions provided with undercut abut-ments; an endframe having a head, and two housing-members projecting therefrom, embracing said portions of the field-core and interlocked with said abutments; and a second endframe attached to the first end-frame and engaging therewith approximately in the plane of one side of the field-core.
