sLUG-'TR-IMMING KNIFE Een LINE-CASTING ivIAoIiINEs.
Application filed May 4, 1925. Serial No. 27,636.'
lThis invention relates to knives which are used for trimming the side faces of type slugs after their deliv-,eryfrom the mold of type casting machines. A
This knife is particularlyl designed for use with a mold which dresses the matrices along a line of feet so that any letters ,or other characters cast in a slug will define by their lower ends a single line-even though 'all of theletters are not of the same size.k
`My improv-ement has in view the'production of a knife of the class described which will trim the slug to its proper body or depth depending upony the size of type desired and will gauge this depth from the side of the slug that is .at the feet of the type or caption base. y
Other-and incidental objects will be'y apparent hereinafter in the' accompanying specification and claims and shown in the drawings which, kby way of illustration, show one and a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In thev drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the knife support-v ing mechanism. y u
Fig. 2 is a. rear elevation asl mounted on the machine. i
Fig. 3l isa cross-sectionon line 3,-3 of' Fig. 2.
Fig. 41s a. kView iooiang from the ien 0il Fior. 2.
The lixed knife 1 is secured by meansof a bracket 2 to a stationary frame portion 3 of the line casting machine. This knife cleans off the bottom side of the slug and is the gauge lknife from which the depth of the slug is measured.
Four shafts 4f are provided for adjusting the position of the movable knife 5. These the screw is a cylindrical groove 11 formed by a head12. Plate 13 is designed toengage the grooveand is fastened to the stationary frame 3 by any suitable'm-eans, such as screws. immovable vin an axial direction and therefore causes blocks (Sand 7 to be moved whenever the shaft is turned. by means of knob 14. They rotation of the screw serves to adjustthe distancebetween knives 1 and 5, and the pitch of the screw bears a` definite relation to this distance. The knob is divided into equidistantly spaced segments defined by grooves 15 which are designated to This plate maintains screw 10` PATENT OFFICE.
indicate thedepthv of slug or point measure- ,y
ment of type. A latch 16 'isprovided to fit into the groove defining the setting of the movable knife, and lugs 17v on the knob are for the purpose "of aiding the operator rto select the groove indicating the size of type more'oftenfused without the necessity of close observation. He need only turn .the knob until the iinger'which is against the ydesired lug contacts the' protruding end of latch 16. i
Thedistance between the two `knives must `exactly correspond with the position of the knob, and careful preliminary setting `must be made. This is'done by providing slots in bracket 18 so that knife 5 can be adjusted y for the size of slug indicated by th-e locked positionfof the knob.r Screws 19 will keep the knife set in the position desired and a plate 2() supported on screws 21 is an addi.-
' tional precaution to prevent lateral displacement during trimming operation. Lockiiuts 22 on the shanks of screws 21 constitute the `means for receiving lateral pressurefrom the knife and definitely securing the pla-te.
What `I'claim is: 1. In a line casting machine, the `combination of a fixed `knife for trimming a slug along its captionbase, a movable knife opstationary frame, a movposite thereto, a able franiefor supporting said movable knife consisting of two blocks so disposed that one is supported on each side of said stationary frame by shafts which are slidably threadedbushing in one of said blocks, and a screw passing therethrough for moving said movable framein relation to said stationary frame and fixed knife to vary the distance ybetween the knives, said screw being axially fixed in relation to said fixed frame.
2. In a. line casting .machine, in combination with knives for trimming slugs of ico mountedion said stationaryr frame, a
2 Lev/assi variable depths mea-sured from their eaption base, a fixed knife for trimming the faces of slugs along their caption bases, a stationary support for said fixed knife, a knife for trimming` the other side of said slugs, a movable block for supportng rsaid last named knife, a plurality of shafts for supporting said block, another block secured to said shafts, a nut in said last named block, and a screw engaging lsaid nut and axially held in said support, the rotation of said screw serving the purpose of varying the distances between said knives.
3. In a line casting machine, in combination with knives for trimmingl slugs of variable depth-s measured from their caption base, a fixed knife for trimming` the Afaces of slugs along` their caption bases, a
stationary support for said knife, a knife for trimming,` the other` side of .said slugs, a movable block for supportingv -said last named knife, a plurality of Ishafts slidably mounted in said stationary support for supporting` said movable block, another block 'fastened to said shafts and disposed on the opposite side of said stationary support from said movable block, a screw having one end rotatively mounted in said stationary supportl and having threaded relation with said movable block, and a knob on said screw for rotating the same to displace the blocks and shafts so as to vary the distance between knife edges. i
4. Ina line casting` machine, the combination of a fixed knife for trimming a slug along its caption base, a support for said knife, a plurality of rods slidably mounted in said support,'bloeks fastened to said shafts one on each side of said supportI and in definite spaced relation, a knife adjustably mounted on one of said blocks, a threaded bushing on the other of said blocks, ascrew for engaging' said threaded bushing, means to hold said screw from axial displacement, said means being fixed relative to said support, and a graduated knob for rotating said screw to slide said blocks and Vary the distance between said knife blades.
5. In a line casting machine, the combination of knives for trimming` .slugs ',of variable depths measured from their caption bases, comprising a fixed knife for'trimming the faces of slugs along their caption bases, a movable knife for trimming, theV other side of the slugs, support means for said knives, and mean s extendingfrom and'coaeting` with said -supljiort means for enabling'adjustment of the distance between said knives by move-- ment of the movablek knife. n
In testimony whereof I hereto afIiX kmy signature.
