Thisv invention relates to the class of laundry, and has more particular reference to an :improved form of wash boiling apparatus.

The .primaryobject of the present invention is to provide an improved apparatus of theabove kind which is simple and durable. .in construction aswell as efficient in use, and Vwhich embodies a stove or furnace constructionl combined with a clothes boiling. receptacle. i

A more specic object of the invention is toprovide a wash boiling apparatus of the above kind wherein the stove or furnace construction is extremely simple and cheap to manufacture, and wherein the furnace embodies a grate structure as well as means for facilitating handling and removal of ashes, which'are' of improved form.

Still another yobject is to provide a furnace construction for wash boiling apparatus of the above kind wherein a removable ash pan is associated with the body of the stoveor furnace for being readily positioned beneath' the grate to receive the ashes falling therethrough, and which may be readily removed for disposal of the ashes in a convenicnt manner.

Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the/same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more lfully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present wash boiling apparatus embodies a portable furnace structure including a cylindrical body 5 preferably formed of sheet metal and provided with a bottom wall 6 having a rectangular opening therein at the front of the body, the latter being open at its upper end for supporting reception of a conventional or other preferred form of clothes receiving andboiling vessel 7.A The vessel 7 is of upwardly flaring formas usual so as to be readily set within the upper end of the body 5 with the larger upper end portion thereof engaging the upper edge of the body 5 so as to be supported by the latter at the required elevation above the bottom Y bottom wall 6 within the opening of the boty tom lining portion 9 las at 10. As many of these legs may be provided as found most desirable, but three are believed sufficient, two at the front, and one at thc rear, the two front legs being provided at opposite sides of the door 12.

Provided on the underside of the bottom wall 6 are a pair of spaced angle strips 16 which may be suitably rigidly fastened in place so as to extend from a point slightly rearwardly of the rear end of the grate 11 to the forward or front side of the body 5 in spaced parallel relation. These angle strips 16 are so related as to have lower inwardly facing flanges, thus providing a pair of opposed guideways in which are slidably engaged the outwardly directed anges 17 provided upon the upper longitudinal or side edges of an ash pan 18. This ash pan 18 is of a size to receive ashes falling through any part of the grate 11 when in rearwardly slid operative position as shown in Figure 3, and provided upon the front end of said ash pan is a sheet metal handle 19 adapted to be conveniently grasped for facilitating the removal and replacement of the'same. Secured to the upper edge of the front wall of the ash pan 18 is an arcuate tray 2() adapted to project at the front of the furnace body when the ash pan 1s operatively positioned. This tray is thus disposed to catch any ashes or live coals which may fall outwardly through the opening closed by door 12 should the same be opened, and the handle 19 is preferably of angular form having one end fastened to the underside of tray 2O and its other end fastened to the outer end of the pan 18 as shown clearly in Figure 3.

An opening is provided in the back of the body 5 near thetop of the latter or above the lining 8, and said body 5 is formed with an integral projecting flange 21 about this opening adapted to receive one end of an elbow 22 provided upon the lower end of a smoke pipe 23. This smoke pipe extends f upwardly from the elbow 22 to the required distance where it is provided at its upper end with a suitable cowl generally indicated at 24, which enables practical use of the device in an unsheltered. place or outside of a dwelling, such as in the back yard of a residen-ce or the like.

In use, fuel is suitably introduced through the opening closed by door 12 and ignited toy provide a lire within the lire boX and partially upon the grate 11. The vessel 7 is then placed in position within the upper i end of the furnace body 5 as shown in Figure 3, whereupon said vessel 7 is partly filled with water that is brought to the boiling point. Upon then placing the clothes within the vessel 7 they may readily be boiled as and for a purpose which is well known in the art. When the clothes have been sufficiently boiled they ma be removed by bodily lifting the vessel 7 rom the furnace body, in a convenient .mannen By opening the door 12, the required attention may be given to the fire from time to time, and any ashes falling or caused to fall through the grate 11 will be caught in the ash pan 18. Such fuel or ashes as may fall at the front of the body under ordinary circumstaiiices will be caught by the tray 20, and when the ash pan 18 becomes filled with ashes, it may be readily removed and the ashes dumped therefrom. This removal of the pan is effected'by simply grasping the handle 19 and sliding the pan 18 forwardly until its flanges 17 ride entirely out of the guideways formed by the angle stri s 164 IVhen the ashes have been dnmpe the empty pan may again be replaced by engaging the flanges 17 in the guideWa-ys and sliding the pan to its rearmost position. The rearward movement of the pan 18 to operative position may be limited by so disposing the tray 20 as to have the latter abut the body 5 of the furnace.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a wash boiling apparatus which is extremely simple and durable in construction and efficient in use, and which may be used to advantage where gas and electricity are not available or where the latter fuels are not capable of practical employment in the open.

Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

said body further having a bottom Wall with the forward edge thereof terminating at the lower edge of the upright wall and having an opening in the forward portion thereof, a grate supported in said opening, an ash pan slidably positioned beneath the bottom wall of the body and grate, an arcuate tray ri gid with the upper edge of the outer side wall of the ash pan to projectl forwardly of the body below the fuel opening, the inner edge of the tray terminating flush `with the front wall of the body, and a lifting handle attached to the tray and having a. bracing part engaging the ash pan.
