My invention relates generally to dentists tools and more particularly to a` certain new and useful improvement in tools especially adapted for retracting tissues in the upper right and left jaw in the malar area for locating posterior dental' nerves and the for access in nerve blocking. f
Because of the location of the malar area it is with diiiiculty that a `dentist isv able to inject in the posterior dental nerve a solution for anesthetizing this nerve. It is therefore one of the principal objects of the present invention to provide an instrument of the character herein described whereby the tissues in this malar area may be retracted to permit e'ective and safe injection of the solution for the purpose described.
As will be evident from the description to follow, the tool can be utilized generally in the mouth for cleaning and scaling teeth in the malar region as well as for burring cavities in buccal cervical cavities of the malar teeth and for guiding grinding instruments for grinding purposes on the teeth.
In accordance with the various objects of the invention I provide a. tool, of the hereinafter described, wherein there are provided opposed blades curved to conform to the outline of the malar bone whereby by gradually working the tool over the superior maxillary `bone the blade is brought into Contact with the tissues of the malar zone whereby upon slight operation of the blade the tissues can be sufficiently retracted to permit the injection of a solution for anesthetizing Athe posterior nerve.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred form of construction, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the tool embodying L the invention illustrating the saine in applied position,
Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same.
To accomplish the various objects of the invention I provide a tool generally indicated ati/51 which includes a handle grasping portion 10 defining opposite lateral largedv portions 11 defining linger tip engaging portions 12 to facilitate holding the tool in the hand when in use. Extending from these enlarged portions 11 are reduced portions 13. The edges 14 of these reduced portions are curved inwardly and then circle outwardly to provide inwardly extending recesses 15 each of which is adapted when the tool is in applied position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, to receive the adjacent portion of the malar bone 16 when in resting position against the superior maxillary bone 17.
The circled portions 18 dene opposed blades 19 substantially circular in outline. These blades 19 are adapted to rest inwardly of the malar bone upon the superior maxillary bone. By gradually working the tool in 'a reciprocal or swinging manner with lower jawA partially closed in an actual case l and swung laterally the tissues in the region of the malar bone can be suficiently retracted to expose the posterior nerve to permit the injection of a solution for anesthetizing this nerve.
As illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing the blades 19 extend in opposite direction with respect. to each other. The object of extending these blades in opposite direction is to permit operation of the tool on either the left or right side of the jaw. The edges 14 of the reduced portions 13 are likewise curved in opposite direction for the purposes above mentioned.
In grinding the tool can be positioned in a location within the mouth so as to. dispose the blade 19 in a position to guard the tissues in the malar region from injury by engagement wit-h the grinding instrument.
In using the tool for cleaning and scaling purposes it is obvious that the blades, by reason of the curvature, can be brought into Contact with the teeth for the purpose.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 the reduced end portions 13 and the blades 19 are curved 1n opposite direction in an upwardly and downwardly direction from the longitudinal axis of the tool. The reason for this is to permit expeditious insertion of either blade in the mouth to be disposed in the region of the malar bone for retracting the tissues for the purposes herein mentioned.
