Application filed September 27, 1927. Serial No. 222,370.
This invention relates to pressing machines as garment pressing machines having a valve .for controlling the flow of fluid as steam or air through the pressing face and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient handle arrangement for bringing the head toward the buck of the machine and when .desired, the valve which controls the flow of fluid through the pressing face of the head.
The invention consists in the .novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
in describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the mounting for the handle.
l have here illustrated my invention as embodied in a conventional type of pressing machine including a buck 1 and a head 2 movable toward and from the buck; the buck being mounted on a goose neck or bracket 3 which in turn is mounted upon a bench 4 carried by the frame 5 of the machine and the head 2 being carried in any suitable manner to move toward and from the buck.
As here shown, it is carried by a yoke lever 6 pivoted between its ends at 7 to a standard 8 rising from the machine, this yoke being actuated in any well known man- 'ner by means connected to the rear arm thereof, a portion of such means as one link 9 of a toggle being shown.
The yoke is provided with a suitable counterweight 1O tending to open the press and also usually springs, not shown, are employed to act in conjunction withthe weight 10 The head2 as will be skilled in the art is provided with perforations through its pressing face through which steam or air is passed to the garment being pressed; in this manner and the blowing or sucking V is well known, further description is unnecessary for a complete understanding of this invention.
The flow of the fluid is controlled by a nor-.
' scious e understood by those As the steaming of garments mally controlled .valve operated at will by the operator.
N. canon, or sYnAcusE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE rnosr'nnrrv com- 11 designates the valve which includes a 1 movable member located within the casing thereof, which memberis operated by a movable operating member as the stem 12 extending to the outside'of the casing.
13 designates a handle mounted on the head to move the same toward the buck preliminary to applying final pressure, the bandle being movable in a direction at an angle to the movement of the head into engagement with the valve operating member 12 to actuate it.
As here shown, the handle'is a lever pivoted on an upwardly extending axis to the head so that the lever is rigid with the head insofar as the up and down movement of the head is concerned, the lever being movable laterally about its pivot in a direction at an angle to the movement of the head to move an arm 14 thereof into engagement with the stem-12.
The laterally out of the vertical away from the valve stem 12 so that the lever tends to some extent to resist lateral movement and hence, an intended .efiort must be made to move it laterally to operate the valve stem- 12. Also owing to the inclination of the pivot pin 15, the lever tends to return to its normal position when released. I
As here illustrated, a bracket 16 is mounted on the top of the buck and is formed with. upper and lower arms 17 and 18 in which the inclined pivot pin 15 is mounted. If desired, a spring may be used to resist the lateral movement of the lever.
This handle mechanism is advantageous in that it acts,
ort, rigidly withthe head to close the ress and operates the valve stem upon a shght conscious lateral movement. What I claim is:
particularly 1. A pressing machine comprising a buck,
head and having means for actuating said pivot pin 15 of the lever is inclined without convalveoperating member during the lateral movement,
2. A pressing machine comprising a buck,
a head. movable toward and rom the buck, a valve mounted on the head for controlling theflow of fluid through the pressing face of the head, the valve including a movable operating member and a handle lever carried- K by the head and pivoted there to on an upwardly extending pivot and havin an arm movable into engagement with tie valve operating member during the pivotal movement of the lever.
3. A pressing machine com rlsing a buck,
a headgnovable toward and rom the buck,
a valve mounted on the head for controlling V the flow of fluid through the pressing face of the head, the valvewincluding a movable operating member and a handle lever carried by the head and pivoted thereto on an upwardly extending pivot and having an arm movable into engagement with the valve operating member upon pivotal movement of the lever, said pivot being inclined out of the vertical in such direction as to tend tomove the lever away from the valve operating member. Y
4:. A pressing machine comprising a buck,
direction of movement of the head and having means for actuating said valve operating member during the lateral movement, the handle being mounted to resist lateral movement out of its normal position and to return towards its normal ally shifted position.
position from its later- T In testimony whereof, 1 have hereunto signed my name at Syracuse, in the-county of Onondaga, and State of New York, this 24th day of September, 1927.
