Application filed February 10, 1927. Serial No. 167,320.
My invention relates to improvements in spring compressors for assembling automobile and other springs of a similar nature,
and the object of the invention is to provide a simple device whereby the leaves of a leaf spring may be assembled accurately, rapidly and thus efiect both the saving of time and labor.
My invention consists of a base plate, upon which are mounted two bracket arms, a centering pin between the same, a sliding plate, two guiding blocks therefor and toggle jointed mechanism cooperating therewith all as hereinafter more particularly explained.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved spring compressor.
1 is a rectangular base plate. Upon this base plate and projecting vertically from it are two bracket arms 2 bent at right angles and thus forming a clamp over the sides of the spring. A pin 3 is held in two vertical supports through the middle of which it passes and it is used to centre the spring to hold it in position by the bracket arms.
This pin 3 is preferably burred on the end which is held in the vertical supports when the spring is in position. This prevents the pin from slipping when pressure is applied to the device. A stop block l0'is provided to prevent the detachment of the pin when it is withdrawn to allow the spring to be taken from the compressor.
4 are two rectangular sliding blocks mounted on the base plate which form a guideway for the movable plate 5. At one,
end of the plate 5 there are two upright lugs 6 which press against the spring during the operation of the spring compressor.
The plate is attached at the other end to a toggle jointed arm 7 which is in turn attached to a lever 8 supported by two bracket arms 9.
It is apparent that when the lever 8 is pushed forward the jointed arm will straighten out forcing the movable plate 5 forward against the spring. The upright prongs 6 will compress the leaves of the spring under such circumstances since the leaves are prevented from moving backwards by the supporting bracket arms 2' \Vhile in this position the spring may be bolted together with the least possible clifficulty. The jointed arm 7 is so constructed and mounted upon the base plate in such a manner so as to break the joint against the base plates that it holds the movable plate forward in the position described until the spring is released by pulling the lever 8 backwards and breaking the joint on the opposite side of the bar and thus withdrawing the plate from contact with the spring,
Two positions are shown in the accompanying drawing. The first or full line position in which the plate is forced forward compressing the spring. This is the position required for bolting the leaves of the spring together. The second ordotted line position is the one in which the plate is drawn back allowing the spring to be taken from the compressor when it has been bolted together. I
My device is simple in construction and is intended to facilitate assembling and bolting together of automobile springs, and is a most efficient time saving device.
While the invention is specifically described as adapted for and applied to the assembling of automobile springs, it is apparent that it may be also applied in the manufacture of any similar types of springs.
What I claim as my invention is: 1. A spring compressor comprising a base plate, and supporting brackets for the leaves of the spring, av centre pin suitably held on the base plate and extending upwardly between the brackets and designed to receive the leaves of the spring through the openings in the centre thereof and a means for exerting pressure upon the grouped springs when they are placed in position on the brackets.
2. A spring compressor comprising a base plate and supporting brackets for the leaves of the springs, a centre pin suitably held on the base plate and extending upwardly between thebrackets and designed to receive the leaves of the spring through the openings of the centre thereof, a sliding plate designed to exert pressure on the grouped springs, suitable guideways therefor and means for imparting a downward movement of the plate against the group springs and holding the plate at the limit of its movement.
A spring compressor comprising a base plate and supporting brackets for the leaves of the spring, a centre pin suitably held on the base plate and extending upwardly between the brackets and designed to receive the leaves of the spring'through the openings in the centre thereof, a sliding plate designed to exert pressure on the grouped springs, suitable guideways therefor, a toggle jointed bar suitably connected to the top of the slidable plate, a bracket supporting the opposite end of the bar and means for imparting movement to the bar.
4. A spring compressor comprising means for holding the leaves together, a centering pin for the holding device extending through the leaves and means for compressing the leaves of the spring together While being secured, and for releasing the same.
