CARL BROZEIT, OF MULHEIM-RUHR-STYBUM, GER-MANY.
PNEUMATIC APPARATUS FOR CUTTING COAL AND THE LIKE.
Application filed October 14, 1925, Serial No. G2,34 5, an l in Germany October 16, 1924.
My invention relates to improvements in pneumatic apparatus for cuttingcoal and the like, and the object of the improvements is to provide an apparatus which can be readily operated by the workman, and which effective in operation. lVith this object in View my invention consists in proriding a cutting apparatus comprising a reciprocating saw and its carrier, and a pneumatically operated piston operatively connected with said carrier for imparting reciprocating movement thereto, the whole apparatus being mounted at the end of a rod preferably constructed for admitting T the pressure fluid to the piston. In the preferred construction the means for connecting the piston and the carrier consist of a lever pivotally mounted on the piston and engaging in a slot of the said carrier, the said rod having an extension adapted to control the movement of the valve of the pneumatic apparatus.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding part-s. In said drawing,
Fig. 1., is an elevation partly in section showing the apparatus, and
Fig. 2, is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the example shown in the drawing my improved cutting apparatus consists of a a head I) fixed to a tubular rod a and provided with a pivot bolt having a carrier rockingly mounted thereon. The said carrier has segmental. saws d, e fixed thereto. The head 6 carries a cylinder 9 having a pneumatic piston h reciprocating therein. The said piston is slotted at its middle as is shown at [L1, and the said slot is traversed by a bolt is having a lever 2' rockingly mounted thereon. The said lever engages in a slot 2' of an arm m made integral with the carrier.
As appears from the drawing, the reciprocating movement of the piston h is transmitted to the carrier 0 through the intermediary of the lever 15, the said lever being adapted to slide within the slot 2' The reciprocating movement of the piston it may be controlled by any known or preferred means. To show what may be done, the head Z) carries a cylindrical valve casing 13 having a piston valve 3, 3' mounted.
therein and closed at its ends by heads 2 formed with exhaust passages 1, 1. The air is admitted to the cylinder 9 through ports 10, 10 and it is discharged therefrom through ports 11, 11, the admission ports 10 being controlled by annular grooves 6, 6 made in the sections 3, 3 of the governing piston and adapted to establish communication between the ports 10, 10 and the tubular rod on. The discharge ports 11, 11 are controlled by the outer ends of the piston sections 3, 3. The lever z' is formed with an extension located between the piston sections 3, 3.
The operation of the governing piston 3, 3 is as follows:
In the position shown in the drawing the piston h is in the median position, and the governing piston 3, 3 is in position for admitting pressure fluid from the tubular rod a through the left hand port 8, annular passage 6, and left hand port to the left hand face of the piston it. Therefore the piston h is thrown to the right, and it carries along the carrier 0 and the saw blades d, e mounted thereon. pressure fluid escapes from the right hand part of the cylinder 9 through the port 11 and the passage lmadein the right hand head 2 of the cylinder 13. When the piston it moves further to the right and into the position shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines the extension 5 engages the right hand piston section 3, thus moving the piston 3, 3 to the right and into position for admitting pressure fluid to the right hand face of the In the meantime the.
piston h and permitting the escape of the pressure fluid from the left hand face of the said piston. Now the piston it is thrown to the left, and the operation first of the saw blades (Z, e and thereafter the governing piston 3, 3 is repeated.
I claim:
1. Apparatus of the class described com prising: a tool bearing head; a pressure fluid supplying tubular handle; a cutting saw and its carrier rockingly pivoted on the head; a reciprocating piston mounted in a transversal cavity of the head; a reciprocating valve arranged in another transversal cavity of the head at the side of the reciprocating piston; conduits for the pressure fluid from the tubular handle to the cavities for the valve and for the piston and to the atmosphere; and a longitudinally extending lever ivoted to said piston one end of said lever Being connected to the tool carrier and the other end adapted to actuate the valve.
2. Apparatus of the class described, eoinprising: a tool hearing head; a pressure fluid supplying tubular handle; a sector shaped saw and its carrier rockingly pivoted on the head; a reciprocating piston mounted in a transversal cylindrical chamber of the head; two reciprocating valves connected by a common stem and arranged in another transversal cylindrical chamber at the side of the reciprocating piston; conduits for the pressure fluid from the tubular handle to the cavities for the valves and for the piston and to the outer ttblllUSPllGlB; an arm on the saw carrier with a slot extending longitudinally in the axis of the apparatus; a. lever rockingly mounted on the medium part of the said pi--ton and in sliding engagement with the said slot; and an extension on the lever, adapted to operate the one or the other of the valves when the lever swings to the side of the hmgitudinal axis of the apparatus.
In testimony \vhereol' l hereunto aliix my signature.
CARL BROZEIT.
