FRONT IEURROW-WHEEL ADJUSTMENT FOR PLOWS.
Application filed February 27, 1926. Serial No. 91,008.
This invention relates to wheel plows, and more particularly to plows of that character which are dirigible for the purpose of efiecting proper operation of the plow under various conditions met in actual use.
More specifically, the invention is concerned with devices for controlling the angular relationship of one or more supporting wheels with the direction of movement of the plow.
It is an object of the invention to provide improved means for controlling the positions of the supporting wheels of the plow so that the draft on the plow frame will tend to hold the plow from lateral movement under appropriate conditions of adjustment.
The invention is exemplified in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view showing a conventional type of plow modified by the incorporation of a structure deslgned in accordance with the teachings of this invention;

In the drawing a plow frame 1 is disclosed having plow bottoms 2 and 3 attached thereto in a well known manner. The plow is supported upon a land wheel 4:, a front furrow wheel 5 and a rear furrow wheel 6. My invention is concerned with the devices connecting the latter two wheels.
The front furrow wheel 5 is rotatively mounted upon the lower bent end of a vertical spindle 7 which is rotatable in the bearing 8, rigidly secured to the plow frame. This spindle is also slidably mounted within the bearing 8, and for the purpose of adjusting the plow frame Vertically with respect to the spindle 7, an adjusting lever 9 is pivoted to a detent bracket 10 which is rotatively mounted by means of the ears 11 upon the spindle 7. The detent bracket 10 is prevented from downward movement on the spindle 7 by means of the collar 12 secured in position upon the spindle by set screw 13. The arm 14 connects the lower end of the adjusting lever 9 with the plow frame, as shown in Fig. 2.
Rotatively mounted upon the spindle 7 between the cars 11 of the detent bracket 10 is a vertical sleeve 15, shown formed as an integral part of the tongue bracket 16. A tongue or equivalent draft device 17 is secured to the front of the tongue bracket 16 so that the latter must turn therewith. For the purpose of desired flexibility of the structure, the tongue may pivot upwardly or downwardly relative to the tongue bracket 16.
The tongue bracket is provided with a vertical integral sleeve 18, which is bored to receive the cylindrical portion of a vertically extending swivel 19, the upper end of which is formed as an eye. The eye portion of this swivel member contacts with the top of the sleeve 18 so as to prevent the downward movement of the swivel therein, and upward movement of the swivel is prevented by means of a cotter pin 20 extending through the lower end of the swivel. The front furrow wheel crank arm 21 is fixedly mounted upon the upper end of the spindle 7 so as to prevent substantial vertical play of the detent bracket 10. This crank arm extends radially from the spindle 7 and has its outer end adjustably secured to the swivel 19, by means of an eye bolt 22.. This eye bolt has screw threaded engagement with, a cylindrical block 28 which is confined within the outer end of the crank arm 21. i
As shown in Fig. 3, the crank arm 21 is laterally slotted at its ends as shown at 24 and 25, for the purpose of allowing pivotal movement between the arm 21 and the eye bolt 22. This same figure discloses a collar 26 pinned to the eye bolt so as to rotatively mount the eye bolt in the swivel 19 and prevent displacement of the eye bolt therefrom.
The rear furrow wheel 6 is a caster wheel mounted upon the plow frame in a well known manner. The spindle of the rear furrow wheel has a crank arm 27 rigidly mounted thereonat its upper end. Pivotally mounted on the outer end of the crank arm 27 is a swivel or eye bolt 28 through the eye of which is passed a control rod 29. The forward end of the control rod is formed as an eye passing through the eye of the eye bolt 22 so as to form therewith a jointed control rod. A hand wheel 30 is fixedly mounted upon the control rod 29 so as to enable the operator to easily rotate the rod.
The furrow wheel adjusting deviceillus' trated is particularly useful in plowing upo n hill sides where the plow is normally caused to slide laterally so as to interfere with its proper functioning. By rotating the con-' trol rod 29, the angle of the front furrow wheel 5.1nay be so altered as to counteract the above mentioned tendency.
In. order that the operation of the illustrative device may be clearly understood, the tongue 17 will be considered as held against lateral pivotal action. Vhen the control rod 29 is turned, the eye bolt 22 rotates within the block 23 and causes movement of the crankarmQl to or away from the swivel 19 depending upon the direction in, which the control rod is turned. This act-ionre su'lts from the fact that the eye bolt is held froni lengthwise movement relative to the swivel 19 by its eye and the collar or sleeve26.- V
When the crank arm 21 is moved, as above 5 described, it is evident that the front furrow wheel 5 will be angled with respect to the plow. The rear furrow wheel does not have its angle changed, as the above action takes place because of the fact that the controiro'd does not move lengthwise.
Having described my invention, I claim:
