My invention relates to a nevi7 and .useful improvement in a boilei cleaiiei, paitic iilarly that class of boiler cleaners in Whicha cleaning fluid 'is discharged against vor in close proximity to the tubes of the boiler for removing the soot and ashes therefrom.
One of tlie objects of the invention is to provide a boiler cleaner of the class described Which may operate from the side of the boiler and which will be `adapted to effectively and quickly clean the tubes of the boiler and which will be protected from the heat of the boiler furnace When not in use.
Another object is to provide a boiler cleaner which will operate from the side of the boiler and which is pivotally mounted to provide for the direction of the cleaning fluid toward a specified portion of the boiler tubes.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a boiler cleaner of this class avnozzled member provided with a plurality of' nozzles which member may be projected into the boiler set-ting and Withdrawn therefrom automatically. v l

The invention consists in the combination and arrangement. of parts hereinafter described and claimed. v

In a boiler cleaner operating through the side of the boiler setting it is desirable that the nozzle bearing member be oscillated about an axis in order to direct the jets of' the cleaning fluid over a maximum area of the boiler tubes. ln order to make the opening formed in the boiler wall of as small diing be as short as possible.

Another problem in a boiler cleaner of this type7 is the difficulty of maintaining the opening in the boiler Wall tightly closed so -as to prevent rinfiltration of air into the boiler setting. In my invention, I have reduced the opening in the boiler Wall to the least possible practicable opening and have provided means Which automatically maintains this opening closed at all times When the device is not used tofperform a blowing operation. 4
The invention as shown in Fig. lis ap` plied to a boiler Which comprises the Walls 9 upon Which is positioned a drum 10. municating Withvthe drinn 10 and projecting into the interior of the boiler setting are Water legs 11 and 12 which are connected by the Water tubes 13 as Will be readily understood. Positioned ina suitable opening :formed in the boiler vWall is afframe 14 comprising side members 18 connected at the opposite ends by suitable cross members. Connected to the side members 18 intermediate the ends lthereof are braces 15 and 15a. Projecting outwardly from the frame may be flanges Which are embedded in the brick of' the boiler Wall. Mounted in the trame 14 is a casing or fitting 19 having an opening 22 formed in said casing. The pipe 21. which is threaded at one end into opening 22, projects through an opening formed iii the frame 14 and is swivelly connected by a suitable coupling 26 to a pipe 25 which communicates by means of the pipe 28 With a suitable source of steam supply such as the steam dome of the boiler with which the device is used, a suitable valve 27 being interposed iii the pipe 25 to control the delivery of steam therethrough.
Provided in the casing 19 is a cylinder 23 which communicates with the space 20. A shoulder 24 is provided on the casing 19 which engages in an opening formed in the y withdrawal of said shoulder through the member 15. v
Slidable in the cylinder 23 is a pipe -29 to the inner end of which `is secureda collar 30 which serves as a sort of a piston. Piston rings 31 are positioned in the member 30 so as to assure a snugn'ess .in the cylinder 23 in order toprevent the escape ofsteam around the .member 30. rPhe .outer end of the pipe 29 is threaded in-to a T 33. Into one end of-said .T 33 is threaded a' pipe. 34,

Each of these pipes 34 and 34V is provided wit-hnozzles 35 which permit `the discharge Vof steam therefrom.
-It ,is seenV from the description thus far that the frame 14 may be securely mounted in the boiler wall and that the casingV 19 is pivotally mounted thereon. When it is desired to clean the boiler the valve 27 .is .opened and steam turned .in-to Athe cylinder thereby thrusting the pipes 34. and 34l which `ordinarily are withdrawn into .the opening formed inthe boiler iiall.y vforwardly into Athe interior of the boiler setting so as to bring these pipes close-r to the `tubes to be` cleaned. The steam issues from the nozzles and serves toclean the `tubes of soot and ashes. .By swinging thev device upon its pivotal mounting the jets lissuing `from the nozzles 35 are caused to travel longitudinally 'over a large area oit the boiler tubes. A suitable handle, as shown in Figure 2, may be con nected to the casing 19in order to eiect v.this
swinging movement. A suit-able cap secured to the casing 19 prevent-s.thefcoinplete withdrawal of the pipe 29 therefrom.
The opening formed in the wall of the boiler `is closed bythe panels S36 `and 3T `which are secured to the frame 14. A small yopening separates the-panels 36 and4 37. Aeiosure 38 is secu-red to the pipe 29 .and lser-ves tomaintain this open-ing normally closed.
When the blowing operation starts Vand the pipes 34 and 34" move inwardly the member 38 is carried away from its normal position so that the openin-gBS is not closed during a blowing operation. Y 1 n Rods 39 are secured at oneend tothe T 33 and project `through .lugs 44C) torinedon the casing 19. Positioned upon these rods `so as to engage at one :end the lugs 40 :are spiral springs 41. N ut-s 42 serve to maintain the springsiii theirv assembled relation to the rods. As will be readily apparent when the `blowing operation starts and the pipes 34 and 34 move inwardly toward the boiler tubes the springs 41'will be compressed. As soon as the steam is shutol'l1 from the blower thereby relieving the thrusting pressure, the spiral springs will retract the nozzle bearing members to their normal position.
. VIt is to be noted -that the point of pivotal connection is at the inner end of the casing 19 thereby bringing the axis about` which the device swings as close to the boiler .as possible.

In a boiler cleaner, .the combination with a reciprocatory blower unit and a pipe for supplying a cleaning vtluid to sai-d unit, said unit having an inlet portion substantially `transverse to .sa-id.1 pipe,o;t a fitting nwherein said inlet portion of the unit is mounted for reciprocation, one end or' said. fitting havingl pivotal engagement with said supply pipe,`
said lfitting having a passa-ge leadingl from its pivotal end to its opposite extremity or delivering the cleaning iiuid to saidiinit in .all positions of its reciprocation.

and VVmeans stationary with respect to the boiler wall for pivotally mounting the said fitting, the axis of pivoting being substanytiallyperpendicular with the axis of projection of the blower unit.
4. In combination with a boiler provided with a wall formed with an opening therethrough, `a `boiler cleaner adapted to clean parts of the boiler comprising a blower member reciprocatory .through said boiler wall opening and provided withl a discharge nozzle adapted to be projected with the blower member rearwardly with. respect to the boiler wall toward theboiler combustion chamber, a. fitting in which said blower member is reciprocably mounted, said fitting having a cleaning fluid passage comnjiunieating with the blower member, andn'ieans stationary with respect to the boiler wall for pivotally mounting the said fitting, the axis of pivoting being substantially perpendicular with the axis of projection of the blower unit, said means including a portion of a cleaning fluid conduit for conducting cleaning fluid from a source of supply to said discharge nozzle.

In combination with a boiler provided with a wall formed with an opening therethrough, a boiler cleaner adapted to clean parts of the boiler comprising a blower member reciprocatory through said boiler wall opening and provided with a discharge nozzle adapted to be projected with the blower member rearwardly with respect to the boiler wall toward the boiler combustion chamber, a fitting in which said blower member is reciprocably mounted, said fitting being provided with a cleaning fluid passage communicating with the blower member, and means stationary with respect to the boiler wall for pivotally mounting the said fitting, the axis of pivoting being substantially perpendicular with the axis of projection of the blower unit, and means automatically responsive to shutting off the supply of cleaning fluid to the discharge nozzle for retracting the blower unit so as to position thesaid discharge nozzle within a portion of the said boiler wall opening.

In combination with a boiler provided with a wall formed .with an opening therethrough, a boiler cleaner adapted to clean parts of the boiler comprising a blower member reciprocatory through said boiler wall opening and provided with a discharge nozzle adapted to be projected with the blower member rearwardly with respect to the boiler wall toward the boiler combustion chamber, a litting in which said blower member is reciprocably mounted, said fitting being provided with a cleaning fluid passage communicating with the blowermember, and means stationary with respect to the boiler wall for pivotally mounting the said fitting, the axis of pivoting being substantially perpendicular with the axis of projection of the blower unit, substantially parallel with the boiler wall and close adjacent thereto.

In combination with a boiler provided with a wall formed with an opening transversely7 therethrough and a plurality of spaced rows of' boiler tubes sloping longitudinally along and adjacent the inner surface of said wall, a boiler cleaner adapted to clean the said boiler tubes comprising a projected with the blower member rear-yA wardly with respect to the boiler wall to! ward the boiler combustion chamber, a fit- Ytingv in which said blower member is reciprocably mounted, said fitting being provided with a cleaning fluid passage communicating with the blower member, and means stationary with respect to the boiler wall for pi votally mounting the said fitting, the axis of' pivoting being substantially perpendicular with the axis of' projection of the blower unit, whereby said blower member may be pivotally moved in its projected position to direct the discharge from the nozzle transversely of the said rows of boiler tubes.
8. In combination with a boiler provided with a wall formed with an opening trans` versely therethrough and a plurality ofA spaced rows of boiler tubes sloping longitudinally along and adjacent the inner surface of' said wall, a boiler cleaner adapted to clean the said boiler tubes comprising a lblower member reciprocatory through said boiler wall opening and provided with a cleaning fluid discharge nozzle adapted to be projected with the blower member rearwardly with respect to the boiler wall toward the boiler combustion chamber, a fitting in which said blower member is reciprocallyv mounted, said fitting being provided ywith a cleaning fluid passage communicating with the blower member, and means stationary with respect to the boiler wall for pivotally mounting the said fitting, the axis of pivoting being substantially perpendicular rwith the axis of projection of the blower member, whereby said blower member may be pivotally moved in its projected position to direct the discharge from the nozzle transversely of the said rows of boiler tubes, and means automatically responsive to shutting ofll the supply of cleaning'fluid for retracting the blower member so as to position the said discharge nozzle within a portion of the said boiler wall opening.
