IMPROVEMENT l N PACKINGS FOR STUFFlNG-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,238, dated August 31, 1785 application filed August 14, 1875,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD GREENALGH, of Greenbush, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stuffing-Box Packing, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of rubber steam-packing cut in long pieces shaped transversely to pack around the rod and fill the space between the rod and the box nicely, so that they receive the pressure of the gland in their lengthwise direction instead of crosswise, as commonly arranged, whereby they expand better and have greater range for expansion than when compressed crosswise.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a stuffing-box with my improved packing. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line a: x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a section of the packing. Fig. 4 is a diagram, showing how the pieces can be cut out of a sheet without waste.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Heretofore rubber packing, whether round or of otherform, has always been wound around the rod in several coils and pressed up crosswise by the gland. When made round the surfaces of the rod and the box are only partly covered by the packing, and when square the cloth has not liberty to expand, as is desirable, and very soon exhausts its capacity for expanding. I therefore propose to arrange the pieces lengthwise so as to upset the packing by pressure on the ends, which affords unlimited capacity to expand, and enables the packing to be used until almost entirely worn away, and it bears on all the surfaces alike.
For this purpose I take a sheet or strip, A, of rubber packing as wide as the depth of the stuffing-box B and as thick asthe space between the rod C and the inner wall of the box, and cut it in pieces E, crosswise on the lines D, which are on the same angle as the radial lines of the stuffing-box, making the pieces of suitable width to fill the box with about twelve pieces, more or less. These pieces being pressed on the ends by the follower F, will pack tightly into all the space and fill the box with equal pressure on all parts. The size of the rod and the width of the space between the rod and the box will give the width the pieces are required to be for filling the box.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Packing for stuffing-boxes consisting of angular pieces E of rubber packing, arranged lengthwise along the rod to be upset by pressure of the gland on the ends, substantially as specified.
