WILLIAM w. LASKER. 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASS-IGNOR, BY MEsNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO REMINGTON RAN-n- INQ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 013' DELAWARE:
TOTAL MECHANISM.
The present invention relates to adding and tabulating machines and more particularly to a'total taking control mechanism.
Some of the objects of the present invention are to provide means whereby the taking of totals can be controlled at will; to provide a cut-out device for machines of the adding type whereby several accumulations of groups of record cards can be'made without taking a separate total for each group; to provide means for controlling the taking of totals in mechanical additions whereby totals can beseparately taken for each group of numbers, or a grand total of all groups of numbers withmittaking totals of each group, or a combined total for as many groups of a number of groups as desired;
and to provide-other improvements as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 represents a detail of parts of a total taking mechanism for adding machines equipped with a total cut-out mechanism embodying one form of the present invention; Fig. 2 represents the same showing the position of the parts in total cut-out position; Fig. 3 represents the end of the total taking shaft actuating link and its adjuncts in total taking position but with the cut-out effective; and Fig. 4 represents the operating parts for the total taking shaft actuating link in total taking position.
Referring to the drawings, one form of the present invention is shown as applied to an adding machine total actuating mech-' anism wherein a total taking shaft is mounted in brackets 11 of the frame 12 and has a laterally extending arm 13 bywhich the shaft 10 is rocked to cause the taking of a total by the mechanism controlled thereby. Motion is transmitted to the arm 13 by a link 14 connected atone end to the, arm 11) and at its opposite end to a crank 15 of a rock member 16 loosely mounted on a. fixed spindle 17 which carries a hearing bracket 18 extending laterally downward to form a piv otal 'supportfor a latch 20. This latch 20 is held by a spring 21. connected to the bracket lb. and resiliently urged toward an arm 212 of the rock member 16. and normally rests against a. projecting side lug 23 on the arm 22, but when the latter is rocked clockwise by total taking shaft actuating cam Serial No. 45,578.
25 through mechanism under control of a total taking control card-as shown in'United States Letters Patent No. 1,376,555, the latch 20 then snaps over the lug to hold the parts in the total taking position for a predetermined time. When the parts are to be restored, a lug 24, secured to rotate with. the total taking shaft actuating cam 25, picks up a pin 26 on the latch 20 and rocks it against the tension of the spring 21 and thereby releases the link actuating rock member 16. For a more detailed description of the foregoing parts and associated elements not here shown, reference may be had to said patent the machine of which has been taken as an exampleto which the present invention can be applied.
For the purpose of rendering the total taking mechanism ineffective. at will, the present embodiment of the invention provides a slot 27 in the link 14 having a branch 30 extending generally in the direction of the le'ngth of the link 14 and a branch 31 extending transversely thereof from one end thereof. The slot 27 and its branches 30 and 31 are of a Width to receive a pin 32 fixed to the total taking. shaft actuating arm 13',"and the arrangement is such that when the pin 32 is in the branch 31 it will receive motion from and move with the link14 to cause a total to be taken but when it is in the branch 30 it will remain stationary and the link 1 11 move relative thereto so that no total is taken.
In order to set the link 14 at will to cause the total taking mechanism to remain idle, or, on the other hand, to take a. total, a lock bar 83 is pivotally connected at 3a to the link 11 and is providedwith two locking notches 35 and 36 so arranged and dimensioned as to seat overthe shaft 10, the notch 36 engaging to hold the link 14 in position to operate the total mechanism and the notch35 engaging to hold the link 14 in position to prevent the taking of a total. A spring 37 is stretched between the lock bar 33 and the irame 12 to place the desired tension upon will cause the total actuating mechanism to shift the link 14 but as the pin 32 rides in the slot: 30 no motion will be transmitted to the total arm 13 and therefore no total will be taken. The total anchoring latch engages the lug 23 to hold the parts in total position even though no total is taken until the cam 25 brings its lug 24, into engagement with the pin 26 to release the latch 20 and allow the parts to be automatically restored.
When the lock bar 33 has been moved to bring its notch 36 into engagement with the shaft 10, the link 14= is moved to bring the arm of the slot 27 and consequently a downward movement of the link 14 under its normal total taking stroke, caused by a total card entering the analyzing unit, will be transmitted to the pin 32 to cause the arm 13 to rock the total shaft 10 for a total taking operation.
It will now be apparent that 'a simple and effective means has been provided for controlling the taking of totals at will so that it becomes possible to take the separate total of each of a group of record cards or to allow such totals to accumulate and take either a grand total-of all groups or a total of such groups as may be selected.
While only a single form is shown in which this invention ma be embodied, it is to be vunderstood that t e invention is not limited to any specific construction, but might be a plied to various forms without departing rom the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a machine of the character stated, the combination of a" card 0 erated total control mechanism, and settab e latch conpin 32 into register with the branch 31' aevaaae trolled means for rendering said mechanism ineffective when a total card is analyzed.
2. In a machine of the character stated, thecombination of a card controlled total control mechanism including a total shaft operating arm and an actuating link therefor, and means for causing said link to function without actuating said total shaft operating arm when a total card is analyzed.
3. In a machine of the character stated, the combination of a card controlled total control mechanism including a total shaft operating arm and an actuating link therefor, and means including a manually operable latch for causing said link to function without actuating said total shaft operating arm when a total card is analyzed.
4. In a machine of the character stated, the combination of a card controlled total control mechanism including a total shaft operating arm and an actuating link therefor, and a two position manually operable latch means for controlling the connection of said link to said arm, whereby said link can be rendered effective or ineffective with respect to said arm at will for total taking purposes when a total card is analyzed.
5. In a machine of the character stated, the combination of a total operating shaft, an arm for actuating said shaft, a link for operating said arm,- means actuated under control of a total card for shifting said link. and means including a lost motion connection between said arm and said link to prevent operation of said total shaft when a total card is analyzed.

WILLIAM W. LASKER.
