This invention relates to certain new and novel .improvements in windows provided. with 'sliding sash frames, and has special reference to the novel construction of the sash frames and their adjusting and locking means combined with the .window frames, wherebywhen the sash lframes are in their closed and locked position an absolutely airtight and weather-proof structure is `provided, and at the same time the .invention includes means whereby the sashframes may be easily manipulated so' as to furnish the desired amount of ventilation without ornating a direct draft, and said novel features constitute improvements on Athe Letters Patent ygranted to me under date of .May 25, 1920, No..1,341,434. 1 f
The. main ob'ect of the invention is to lprovide a simple, durable, economical and thoroughly efficient window frame, and sliding sashes fitted therein, in' connectionwith novel sash adjusting and locking means,'so

As shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 it will be seen that the inner stop strip, at each side of the window` frame is composed of lan upper sta-v tionary section 33' and a lower hinged section 34, each hinged section being provided with a plurality of hinges, one leaf of each of said hinges being fixedly fitted within a recess formed inthe inner face of the section and having a knob or headed pin 35 fixed thereto, with the other leaf thereof fixedly fitted into a recess formed in the face of the window frame, with an opening 36 formed therethrough, and leading'to a' recess of slightly larger diameter formedl in the window frame for the reception of the knob or headed pin 35 when said section` is in its closed position, each of said hinged sections being adapted to swing outward when it is deslred to remove the sashes, ork to ventilate the room by swinging the lower vstrip at each side of the window frame is y'composed of Aa lower stationary section 5l sash inward. Within a recess formed in t-he lower end portion of each of the stationary sections 33 is fixedly secured a small pulley 39adapted to receive thesash cords, and thus prevent wearv andfriction `on said cords when the lower sash is adjusted inwardly. p y
At each upper end face of the upper sash lis fixedly secured withinA a recess formed in vsaid face a metallic plate 40, as clearly shown in Figs'. 9 and 10, adapted to cover the sash cord fasteningsocket 41 to protect said cord fromthe weather and stam ed l*within ythe at'its outer end, from whence it converges r v gradually inward and terminates at its inner end with a semi-circular wall 43, and said plate is adapted to be seated within a recess 42 formed inthe sash, which recessed portion 42 and wall 43 are adapted to engage with a headed pin or roller 44 fixedly secured at each side of the inner face of the window frame nearv its top portion, when the upper sash is adjusted outwardly for ven-A tilation, thereby forming 'anchoring means for supporting the said upper' sash in its outward position and preventing its accidental falling in the event of the parting of the sash cords, and its removal from the window .byy an unauthorized person.' "Itfwill be seenl that saidl plate 40 is yadapted to be swung outwardly on its fixed pivot pin or screw 41 for the purpose of removing the sash cord from its socket 41, only when the 1 sash is removed from the window frame.
As shown in'Figs. 11 and 15, the meeting rail of the upper sash is provided with a plurality of rods 45, onev end of'each rod having a globular portion resting -within a socket 46 formed in the meeting rail, thereby forming a ball and4 socketconnection and its other depending end portion l47 terminating with a slightly enlarged end 48, receivable within 1 an enlarged recess, also formed in the said rail, each of said-recesses beingv covered by va-' metallic plate 49 and 50, each plate having an opening therethrough yto receive the end portions of the rod, the opening'in the plate 50v being of -diameter to permit the enlarged sufficient end 48 to be lifted therefrom when properly guided.
It will be'apparent that the outer stop `for ventilation, and at such time' the end portion 47 of each of the rods vfrom its respective` socket, and passed through theopening 47 "formed in the outwardly extended member 53 of the metallic bracket 54, fixedly fitted within a recess formed 'in the inner facer of the windowy frame and on the upper faceof each stationary section 51, respectively, said' extended member of the bracket serving tocover a recess 48 formed inthe upper end portion of eachy stationary section of larger diameterI 45 is lifted nui than the opening 47', and adapted to retain the enlarged end portion of a rod within the recess theieby fixedly securing the upper sash in its outwardly, adjusted position, shown in Fig. 4, until it is desired to return said sash into Aalineinent with the window frame, when it vwill be simply .necessary to lift the ends of the rods from the recesses 48 and return them to their respective recesses formed in the meeting rail of the upper sash.
The inner face of each of the hinged upper sections. 52 is provided with a recess '55 formed therein each serving when the sections are in closed position to be fitted over to cover and protect the headed,v pin or roller 44, and the lower end'ot'eacli of `said hinged sections is provided with a fiXed beveledor round headed pin 56 which is adapted to be seated within the opening formed in the slightly beveled land yielding extended member 53 of the bracket 54, and thus secure the said sectionsv when in their closed position, as shown in Fig. 14. c
It will be seen that the lowermost end of the removable section ot the parting rail or strip is fitted within a recess formed in the window; sill .while the tongue formed on the said strip or rail terminates slightly above said sill. l

A window of the character described, comprising a frame, slidable and swingable sashes fitted therein, hinged inner stop sections secured to the lower portions of the jambs, hinged outer stop sectionse adapted to be fitted into the end faces of the .lower sashv secured to the upper portions of the jambs, a plurality of locking means fixed to the lower hinged sections, and means secured, to the outer end face of the upper sash adapted to engage with means securedto the uppcrportionof. the frame forsupporting's'aid upper sash in its ,outward adjusted position. .i

A window of the character described, comprising a frame, slidable and .swingable vsashes tted therein, a lower fixed jamb sashes litted therein, hinged stop sections secured to the lower portions of the jambs and provided with a plurality .of locking means adapted to engage cooperating means in the lower sash to hold the latter in a plurality of inward adjusted positions, and means carried by the upper sash for holding said sash in its outward adjusted position.'

A window of the character described, comprising a frame, slidable and swingable sashes fitted therein adapted to be adjusted in reverse directions, the upper sash being provided at each end face thereof with a pivoted recessed metallic plate, a` roller iXedly secured to the said frame adapted to engage with said recessed plate, and means carried by the meeting rail of said sash for securing the sash in its outward adjusted position.
12. A window of the character described, comprising a frame, slidable and swngable sashes fitted therein adapted to be adjusted in reverse directions, a pivoted recessed Y metallic plate secured tok each outer end face of the upper sash adapted to cover the sash cord socket, a strip fixedly secured to the window jamb, a roller fixedly securedto each side of the said frame adapted to engage with the recessed plate, and means carried by the meeting rail of said upper sash adapted to engage with a recess formed in the upper end'of the said strip for securing the said sash in its outward position.
13. A window of the character described, comprising a frame, slidable and swingable sashes fitted therein adapted to be swung in opposite directions, a strip secured to each jamb, a plurality of rods secured to the meet ing rails of the upper sash, each of said rods being formed with anenlarged end portion adapted to engage with a recess formed in the upper end of the respective one of said strips and adapted to secure the said upper sash in its outward adjusted position.
14. A window of the character described, comprising a frame, slidable and swingable sashes fitted therein, hinged stop sections secured to the lower portions of the jambs provided with a plurality of locking means adapted to engage with sockets kformed in each end face of the lower sash frame, hinged sections secured to the upper por tions of said jambs, each last named section being provided with a recess near its upper end, a metallic recessed plate secured to each upper end face of the upper sash adapted to engage with a roller iiXedly secured to each yjamb, and receivable in one ofy said recesses, and means secured to the meeting rail of the upper sash for holding said sash in its outward adjusted position.
