The invention described herein, may be manufactured and used by or for theGrovernment for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
.The subject of this invention is a fuse for projectiles.
rlhe type of instantaneous elongated fuse designed to burstay shell above the ground functionsv by direct action on impact of the head of the fuse.v At short ranges the axisk of the projectile, at the time of impact may make such a vsmall angle with the targeton which impact is obtained, usually the surface of the ground, that the impact is not obtained on the head of the fuse. Under such conditions this type of fusewould not function reliably. This depends on the angle of fall to secure operation of the fuse reduces its flexibility yin meeting tactical requirements and in the 75 m/m caliber gun of ordinary muzzle velocity and trajectory the minimum range prescribed for this fuse is approximately 2550() yards. f
rlhe purpose of the present invention is to refashion existing fuses of the foregoing description in order to` include a feature which will permit functioning on graze impact and thereby remove the minimum range limitation.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view,.my invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafterr described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the preciseembodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spiritof the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the 'accompanyingdrawing, wherein:
Fig. l is a longitudinal sectional view of a fuse constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing. the parts in armed position;
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional viewson the respective lines of Fig. 1. y
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference The fuse comprises an elongated body 5 threaded as at 6, for attachment toa shell and formed with an` axial passage 7 for establishing a means of communication be- ArsN'r `orricatween front detonator 8 and a rear detonator 9. p This passage is normally interrupted by an inclined transverse plunger 10 which is moved clear of the passage under the influence of centrifugal force during the flight of the shell.
llhe direct action element of the firing mechanism is embodied in a liring pin or striker 11 which is held against relative movement with respect to the fuse bodyr by a pin 12, shearable on impact, and also by means or a bore safe device consisting of.
half blocks 13 embracing the firing pin and held together by a spiral 14 having a weighted end 15.' The blocks and spiral are conn'ned between the head 16 of the striker anda washer 17 freely mounted on the pin direct-1y in front of the fuse body.
The spiral is normally prevented from un- Winding by means of a sleeve l'slidably mounted on the. fore part of thev body and held in inoperative position by means of a pin" 19 which is sheared on set-back. Upon withdrawal of the sleeve the spiral is un-A wound due to tlie'action of centrifugal force and the 'blocks' are permitted to `break away.` y f The indirect action element of ythe firing mechanismf comprises an inertia plunger 20 which carries the front primer detonator 8 and extends forward around the lstriker terl abling it to have unobstruced forward disl.
placement.
In the event of a graze impact ,the plunger will, due to its inertia, move against the action of the spring and will thus causeactuation of the firing mechanism.
The incorporationAv of the plunger in a direct action fuse of the type specifiedisthus made without material alteration' of its structure and the plunger is held to the in-y operative position by the safety feature alreadypresentinfghe fuse@ 1 -v 1 A fuse including a body, a striker-mount? ed in the forward endvof'the'bodyn.shear pin securing the striker to the body, a Wash- -er sldably mounted on the strikerflforwmde ly of the body, safety means A removable dur-l ing flight interposed 'betweerrlthelwasher Anndplunger.
