H'. M. KiRKHAM ATTACHING DEVICE FOR CUTTING SURGICAL ADHESIVE TAPE ON SPOOLS Filed April 1, 1927 A t torney Patented May 29, 1:928.
UNITED STATES HARRY MI. KIBKHAM, OF KANSAS CITY, IISSOT J'BI.
ATTACHING DEVICE FOR CUTTING SURGICAL ADHESIVE TAPE ON SPOOLS.
Application filed April 1,
My invention relates to improvements to cutters for adhesive tape, and the like, on rolls. a
Thejobject of my invention is to producea devlce'of the character described which will be new, useful and practical, compact, strong and eflicient for the purposes intended; that will be cheap in construction and ,manufacture and easily handled and used;
and be of utility.
It is known to those familiar with the art to which my invention pertains that surgical adhesive tape is made of heavy cloth and filled with a heavy adhesive filler and ad- I heres very tenaciously to the layer next below the portion desired to be cut when placed in aroll on a'spool; it is also hard to handle after bein cut and removed from the spool owing to its liability to touch and therefore to become adhered to the shears cutting it or the other art of the tape or to the hands, or other 0 ject which it may contact. It is also a very slow process and unhandy in handling the roll of surgeons adhesive tape with the hands to unroll it and cut it with.
shears.
One of the needs of surgeons isa cheap easily attachable and detachable device for attaching to the spool containing surgeons so adhesive tape which will be strong properly proportioned and practical in the cutting of the tape from the 'spool as desired. Y
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and I novel combination of parts-hereinafter fully described, illustrated in'the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims h ereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the 1 scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit. and principle 1 or sacrificing the advantages of the inven- F tion. The novelty, invention, and other ob- 5 jects will be more fully shown in the specifii face of convex portion 12' of cutting memcation, claims and accompanying one sheet drawing, of which, Figure 1 is a'perspective view of the device attached to a roll of adhesive tape showu ing a part of the device in dotted-in por- -tions; Fig. 2'is a perspective view' of the device showing the cutting edge ground on the blade member; Fig. 3 is analternate form of the cutting blade 'or detached 'cuttlng edge u stt che to the li ed b 1927. Serial no. 150,145.
Like characters or references designate like parts in all the figures. One embodiment for accomplishing the purpose of my invention isas follows: I provide a handle member 1, havin arms- 2, 3, with coiled spring ends- 4,7), adapted to fit into the spool cylinder 6 of an ordinary V,
tape spool having protecting side discs 7, 8, said arms 2, 3, have a horizontal portion 9 therebetween; I also provide a cutting member 10 having integral therewith at its. upperend a sleeve 11, adapted to fit over sald portion 9, and having a rtion 12 preferably'convexed between sai vsleeve portion and the cutting blade portion 13, thereof. Said cutting blade portion is beveled from 14 to the cutting point 15. I also provide the detached blade member 16 with perforations therethrough 17, 18, adapted-to be held in place by screws 19, 20, tosaid cutting member 10 through perforations near its. lower edge; Said detached and attached cutting blade member has beveled edge between surface 21 and outer cutting surface 22 'similar to the beveled edges 14, 15, of said first described blade member.
It is my desireto have the cuttingmember. 4
and blade member of such width as will be suitable to be used on various widths of adhesive tape and the liketo be cut off so such .widths will not interfere with the easy turnjing of the roll. of adhesive tape and the device between the outer disc 7, 8. I
In operating, the arms 2, 3, are slightly sprung apart to go down over the outer surfaces of discs 7, 8, and coil springs .4, 5, are
adapted to be inserted in the outer respecher 10 so as to cause the cutting-surface 15 of the cuttingblade to belfirmly against the tape at point 25. Holding the cutting member firmly he then quictldy pulls u on 106 one side edge of the unroll tape fo 0 ing the pressure across the tape thereby cutting it. from sidetoside and giving him the desired sized piece of tape. It is to be understood that the cutting memberIO shall 11' he of sufiicient strength and thickness for the purpose of cutting the various strengths and thicknesses of tape desired to be used. From the description and accompanying one sheet drawing; the specification, and appended claims, the advantages of construction, application, manufacture and opsuch as fall within the scope o my inven-' tion as defined in my appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is: a
1. A device of the character described, comprising a wire member having a straight horizontal sectionand two arms at right angles thereto, each of said arms having an inwardly coiled portion at its outer end strai ht horizontal section of said wire 'mem r, and having at the other end a in t e, inside of the end of aspool for holding adhesive tape, and the like-;. a metallic convexed member having an integral sleeve 4 at one end adapted to movably fit said sharp cutting surface adapted to cut'adhesive tape and the like.
2. The combination w1th a spool of adhesive tape, and the like, of a device of the character described, comprising a wire member having a straight horizontal section and two arms at right angles thereto, each of said arms having an inwardly coiled portion at its outer end; a metallic convexed 41 member having an integral sleeve at one end and a sharp cutting surface at the other; said coiled portions bein adapted to. movably fit in the inside 0 the ends of said spool, said sleeve being adapted to movably 5 fit 'said horizontal section of said wire member, said convexed member being adapted to movably fit inside the discs of said-spool, and said cutting surface being adapted to cut adhesive tape and the like while on 5 said spool: I
