vThis invention relates to improvements in brakes.
An object yof theinvention isto provide a brake mechanism arranged lo be operated from the inside or outside of a railway car, wherein the construction of the brake -is greatly simplified in a manner 'facilitating rapid assemblage and increased .efficiencyv in operation.
A further object of the invention is 'to provide mounting mean-s inthe form o'f oppositely disposed housings which are -arranged to freely removably contain the brake operating mechanism when detached, the construction beingsuch that when the housings are secured to the car wall'afll the operative parts of the brake mechanism are held in assembled relation by such housings.
A still further object of the invention is to provide removable bearing members which extend vthrough the wall of the car, one of such bearing members having a plurality of bearing points, such bearings being arranged to be held in operative relation by securing the `housings Vwith which lthe bearings are associated to the car wall.
Still another object of the invention is to Vprovide a novel ratchet operating mechanism for use in connection with a brake of this character, said mechanism including an actuating member having means adapted to coact with the ratchet wheel and 'fu'lcr'um means cooperating with an abutment on 'the housing of the brake, whereby upon swinging movement of such actuating men'i'ber, the ratchet coacting means travels 'from its no rmal inoperative position into operative engagement with the ratchet, the 'fulcrum means moves out of contact with the abutment on said housing, and continued swinging movement of ythe actuating member serves to rotate the ratchet wheel and 'the brake drum connected therewith, the construction being such that the actuating member when released returns to normal inoperative position under the influence of gravity.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will more clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention, showing the interior construction thereof in dotted lines. Referring .more particularly .to Fi .ure 2 of the drawings, represents ka wal of `a f railway car of well-known construction, to which the brake is adapted to ,bewsecureiL such wall being Iprovided with openings 111 in the usual manner for mounting .a brake of the character contemplated herein. Thev brake preferably .includes oppositely disposed housings A and B, the housing A bei: adapted for disposition on the outer side 0 the wall lOan-d the 'housing B on the `opposite side ofsuc'h wall, as shown. The housing A is preferably provided withsecur'ing ings 12 having openings therein forthe insertion of retaining bolts 13, such retaining bolts yinthe secured position of .the parts extending through the wall 10, and engaging'lugs 14 formed on the housing B.
The housing yis preferably lprovided with a curved side wall 15,"and end wall l16., ,the walls and 16 cooperating to `provide an interior chamber preferably sub-'divided `by l means of a 'partition 1.7 .to .form ya relatively large compartment 18, and a smaller compartment 1'9, the ,partition .17 hawing an opening therein, and being provided along its outer edge lwith a .strengthening rib 21. The housing A is .also provided with a slot 22, communicating with .the lchamber 19, for a ipurpose which will presently v4appear. The end wall 16 of .the housing y is provided with an inwardly disposed boss V23, having an opening 24 therein, sueh opening preferably being surrounded by .an .annular rib 25, the outer edges of the end -wall 16 having strengthening ribs ,.26 thereon. The housing B is similar to the housing A,hav ing an interior chamber 27 provided by the side wall 28, and the end wall 29, the Aside wall 28 having a slot 30 therein, and the-end wall 29 having Aan .opening 31 therein.
Disposed in housing `A is .a bearing member 32, preferably including a `flange Y33 adapted vto abut against the 4outside .of `the wall 10 of the car, such bearing member having a hollow hub portion 3.4, extending through the openings 11y formed in the wall 10, ,such hub Iportion 'being provided with spaced bearing `surfaces and 36. supporting member 38` provided With a flange 39 arranged to rest against the inside of the Wall 10, and a bearing hub 40 having an opening adapted to accommodate the adjacent inner end of the hub portion as shown; The member 38 is held 1n position inthe same manner as the bearing member 32, that is, by means of a seat 41 formed by offsetting a portion of the inner edges of the sidewalls of the housing B, and such inemberserves as a retaining means for mechanism' disposed in the housing B When `the housing is secured in position. j
`Disposed in the housings A and B is a cylindrical operating shaft l42, such shaft lextending through the hub portion 34 and having bearingengagement with the bearing surfaces 35 and 36 of such hub portion, a reduced squared portion 43 of such shaft extending into the chamber 27 `of the housing B and having its extremity disposed in the opening 31 in the end wall 29 of such housing.,` rlhe 'shaft 42 alsoextends through the compartments 18 and 19 of the housing A, the outer end of such shaft being cylindrical and freely mounted Withinthe opening 24 inthe end Wall 16, and `having a iange 44 thereon adapted to abut against the boss 23 to limit the endvvise movement of the shaft. The portion of the shaft 42 disposed in the chamber 18 is arranged to provide a lWinding drum 45, such drum having secured thereto by any suitable means, the chain 46, Which is connected With the brake shoes in the usual manner. The shaft 42 also has a ratchet Wheel 47 pr-eferably formed integrally therewith, such ratchet Wheel being located in the chamber 19 of the housing A, the ratchet Wheel preferably having a hub 48 formed thereon which is arranged to abut against the lianged portion of the bearving member 32 to limit the endwise movener Walls of the housing A, as clearly shown v in Figure 1 of the drawings. The operating portion 50 has a tooth 51, adaptedpto cooperate With the ratchet Wheel 47, and a fulcrum part 52 which cooperates with the fulcrum abutment 52LL on the housing A. The operating portion 50 is preferably integrally 'formed with a connecting `member vv53, which has an elongated opening 54 adapted to loosely receive the hub 48 of the ratchet Wheel; By this arrangement upon movement of the lever 4i) in the direction indicated by the arrow shown in Figure l, the portion 52 fulcrums on the abutment 52 provided by the housing so asto cause the tooth 51 to move into engagement with the ratchet wheel 47, the opening 54 permitting this fulcruming movement of the operating portion 5() With reference to the housing A. Eventually this action causes the tooth 51 to become fully seated against one yof the teeth of the ratchet Wheel 4T, at which time the lever tomove out of contact with the abut-` ment portion 52L of the housing,l bringing about rotation of the shaft and imparting Winding movement to the drum 45, the swinging movement of the lever being limited by the end of the slot within which it moves. Upon release of such lever, the same falls into its normal position through the influence of gravity, thereby disengaging the tooth 51 from the ratchet wheel 47 by reason of the lever 49 fulcrun'iing on the abutmentl 52"L in a direction the reverse of lthat heretofore described. A spring operated pavvl 55 is provided for preventing retrograde movement of the ratchet Wheel 47, such pawl being releasable by means of the lever 56, When desired.
The housing B on the inside of the car is also provided with operating mechanism including ratchet wheel 57, mounted `on the reduced` squared portion 43 of the shaft 42, such ratchet Wheel having a hub 58 formed thereon. A lever 59, similar tothe lever49, is provided, such lever having an operating portion (S0, a ratchet lengagii'ig tooth (il, and a fulcrum part G2 adapted to engage an abutment portion (32 on the housing in the saine manner as the lever 49, the ratchet operating portion 30 preferably being integrally formed with a connecting member G3, having an elongated opening 64 for receiving the hub 58,`the lever operating in the slot 30` in the same manner as above 'eX- plained. A release lever 56 similar to the lever 5G is provided in the housing B, and
`such levers are connected by means of a shaft to move in unison in the usual manner in bra-lies of this character, such for instance as shown in Patent No. 1,240,324.

The release lever 56 and actuating spring are `first mounted in operative position within vthe housing. The shaft 42 isi-next inserted through the opening 54 ofthe vlever 49, and the latter member is then inserted in an angular direction througlithe slot 22 of the housing A .until the greater portion of the 'lever proper lprojects therethrough, the shaft being also meanwhile tipped `at an angle relative to the housing. The shaft Vis then entered from the inner end of' the vhousing through the 'openino` 2() :in the partit-ion 17, the shaft and lever then being brought simultaneously -to their final normal position relative to the housing, with the end of .such shaft extending into the opening 23 of the housing, the drum being `thereby arranged i-u the conn partinent 18, and the ratchet wheel in the compartment `19, the leveil 49 hanging ,vertically therefrom through the opening 22 with the hub 4S of the shaft extending through the opening 54 thereof The bearing meinber 32 -is then slipped onto the shaft 42, so as to rest in the seat 37. It apparent that vthe housing A with -the associated parts can now be secured to the Wall lOby the retaining bolts 13, so that all ofthe parts of the mechanism are positively held in operating position,` so long as the housing is secured to the Wall 10. The mechanism .thus far described is complete in itself, and could be used separately, the housing in this position Vproviding two points vvof bearing,` 35 and on the single -member 32 for the shaftg42, theiieby obviat ing the difficulties.heretofore experiencedin assemblingbrakes of this type Where the bearings for the shaft are provided in separate members. The lhousing B is assembled byfirst'placing tlieinner release lever 56 in posit-ion therein, then inserting the operating lever 59 through theslot -30 into its proper position.A The ratchet Wheel 57 is then assembled with the khub 58 projecting through the openingv 64 of the` lever, after which thel bearing member 38 is placed in position therein, so .as to receive rthe inner end of the hub 34, the reduced portion of the shaft 42 extending through the ratchet Wheel, and the connecting member of the lever 59. After inserting the inner end of the release lever shaftinto the opening therefor in the inner release lever, the Whole assembly is then shoved back against the car Wall and bolted thereto. Thus, ,when ythe housing B is secured to the Wall 10, the entire .operating mechanism ofthe brake is arranged to be operated fromeither the outside or inside of the car and it should be noted that the brake assembly contained Iin .the
housing Bis vcapable of considerable longitudinal adjustment relative tothe end of the `hub 34, .in this manner compensating for variations in thicknesses of car Walls which occur in practice.
Another important feature in the invention resides in providing the operating handles 49 and 59 which are similar in all respects. It should be observed that the operating kportion 50 of the lever 49 eliminates the necessity for a separate connect-ing link, ordinarily svvingably mounted on the operating shaft in brakes of this character, to which the lever Vis pivotally connected. In operating the lever 49 initial swinging moveineiit of the lever will cause the saine to fulcrum on the fulcruin part 52, lthe opening 54 permitting bodily radial displacement of the lever,`causing the tooth 51 to move into engagement with the ratchet Wheel and the part 52 to move out of contact with the fulycrum portion 52nl of the housing and the nplper left-hand edgeof the opening 54 `to engage theshaft, continued swinging of the lever serving to rotate the ratchet Wheel. The swinging movement of the lever 49 limited by the end of the slot 22, so that the `lever Will return to normally inoperative position Lunder the influence of gravity when released, and the slot 30 limits the swinging movement of the lever 59 in a like manner,
vthe operation of such lever being the saine as described with respect to the lever 49.
`Referring to Figure 4, a slightly different y'embodiment of the invention is .illustrated, such embodiment including the housings A and B', supporting wall 110, and operating mechanism of :the character above explained, including a shaft 142, a ratchet Wheel 143, a Winding drinn 144, an operating lever 145 and the usual connecting link, all disposed in the housing A.
In this form of invention the housing B is provided Willi vanintegral wall 146, upon which is mounted an integral hub 147, einl tending into vopenings formed in the Wall 110, there being a bearing member 132 mounted in the housing A', such member having a portion 148 adapted to tit over the end of the hub 147, the inner end of the hub serving as a bearing for the' shaft 142. rlhe shaft 142 is preferably provided With a reduced end portion 149 which is square iii cross-section, the extremity 150 of the shaft being round in cross-section, and mounted in a bearing opening v151 in the end Wall of the housing B. A ratchet Wheel 152 is mounted on the ysquare portion 149 of the shaft 142, such ratchet Wheel having a hub 153 adapted to have mounted thereon a connecting` link 154 to which the lever is pivotally connectedas at 15G, this lever being the ordinary type of operating` lever shown in connection With brakes yof the character described indetail in Patent No. 'l,24().324.v The mech- Utl anisrn included in this embodiment ofthe in-` vention is assembled in practically the same manner as before described, the differences.
