Application Med January 4, 1927. Serial No. 159,003.
This invention relates to improvements in smoking outfits and more particularly to the construction and arrangement of such outfits which are of the edestal type.
It is among the principal objects of this invention to provide a smoking stand which is not only a apted for utilitarian purposes but which is also suitable for use as an ornamental article wherever it may be used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a smoking stand which is characterized by the rovision in its u per portion of a torch-li e lamp electrical y illuminated.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a smoking stand, the upper portion of which supports a pair of vertically spaced members between which is an ranged a cylindrical ornamented lamp shade and the upper ofwhich members supports the ash tray.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an electrically operated ciratively associated with an electrically i uminated smokstand.
urther objects and objects relating to details and economies of construction and appear from the detailed description to ollow.
A structure constituting a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawin s forming a part of this specification in which:
Fi re 1 is a side elevational View oi the comp etc smoking stand;
Figure 2 is a top Ian view.
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view of ({he upper portion of the smoking stand; an
Figure 4 is a plan view of the lighting end of the electrical cigar or cigarette tically extending supporting member 12 is formed with an annular collar 14 constituting an upper abutment for a lower casting member 15. This member 15 is of substantially dishsha ed form and is provided at 1ts perip eral edge with an upstanding wall 16. A plurality of laterally extending lugs 17 are cast integrally with the member 15 and constitute means for supporting the verstrap members v18. As clearly appears in Figures 1 and 3, these strap members are turned outwardly at their lower ends and are preferably secured to the lugs 17 by the screws 19.
An upper member 20 of generally annular form is supported upon the u per ends of the strap members 18 such t at it is maintained in vertically spaced relation with respect to the lower member 15. Lugs 21 are formed integrally on the member 20, these lugs extending downwardly to overlie the outer surfaces of the strap members 18 and are securely fastened thereto by the screws 22. The internal diameter of the annular member 20 is preferably slightly greater than that of the wall 16 around the peripheral edge of the lower member 15.
A lamp shade 23 of substantially circular cross section is removably mounted upon the lower member 15 and held thereon againstlateral displacement by the wall 16. This lamp shade, which may be made of glass, parchment or any other suitable transluccnt or transparent material, may be decorated in any desirable manner and resents the efiect of an illuminated torch w en the lamp 24 which is enclosed by the shade,-is turned on. The lower member 15 serves as.
the bottom enclosure for the lamp shade and 95 an o ening 25 is provided therein throufgh whic may be drawn the pull chain 36 oroperating the lamp socket switch.
The annular member 20, constitutin the upper ring surrounding the lamp sha e 23, 100
for the lamp enclosure 23. The portion of 10s the member 20 immediately surrounding this concaved surface 26 is in the form of a lateral flange 27 provided with integrally formed grooves or notches 28 in whic the cigars or cigarettes may be temporarily- 1 19 placed, this flange 27 being also provided with the integrally formed projections 29-30 for holding a match box in place.
Secured to the lower surface of the laterally extending flange 27 of the upper member 20 in any preferable manner is a hook shaped member 31 for supporting an electrical cigar or ci arette lighter indicated generally by the re erenee numeral 32. This ighter 32 comprises essentially a lighting coil unit 33 which is mounted, in any desirable manner, within an open ended shell or casing 34, the closed end of the shell being provided with a supporting ring 35 for engagement over the hook 31. The lighter is operated by a switch button 36 projecting through the rear of the casing and into the ring 35. The electrical connections from the source of current supply to the lam and to the socket are of course readily un erstood, the leads for this purpose extending u wardly through the tubular stem 11 to tiie 1am socket 13 and to the lighter 32, the lead 37 rom the lighter to the lamp socket within the shade 23 passing through an opening 38 provided for the purpose in the lower member 15.
I am aware that the particular embodiments of my invention, which I have here shown and described, are susceptible of considerable variation without departing from the spirit thereof and, therefore, I desire to claim the same broadly, as well as specifically, as indicated by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and useful is:
1. In combination, a base, a stem extending vertically thereabove, a lamp supported upon the upper end of said stem, a plate fixed to and extendin laterally of said stem,a substantially cy indrical casing surrounding said lamp and supported by said plate such that the latter constitutes the bottom cover therefor, and a member su ported by said plate independently of sai casing and arran ed in embracin relation with respect to t e upper end 0 said casing, said member being arranged above the upper end of said lamp whereby to constitute a seat for an ash tray.
2. In combination, a base, a stem extending vertically thereabove, a lamp supported upon the upper end of said stem, a lower member supported by said stem, said member being provided at its peripheral edge with an upstanding wall, an upper member supported upon said lower member and spaced vertically above the upper end of said lamp to constitute a support for an ash tray, said upper member being provided with a central opening, and a lamp shade of substantially cylindrical form insertable through said central opening, said shade being founded on said lower member with the bottom edge embraced by said upstanding wall and the upper edge thereof projecting vertically through said central opening.
3. As an article of manufacture, a smoking stand of the character described comprising a pedestal, a lamp arranged in the form of a torch at the upper end thereof, a removable shade surrounding said lamp, and means supported independently of said shade for supporting an ash tray immediately above said torch lamp.
4. As an article of manufacture, a smoking stand of the character described comprising a pedestal, a lamp supported upon the u per end thereof, a substantially cylindrica enclosure for said lamp, and a supporting member freely embracing the upper end 0 said enclosure, said member being formed with a seat at the inner peripheral edge thereof for reception of a tray.
5. The combination with a pedestal supported lamp and an enclosure therefor having an open top, of means sup orted by said pedestal independently of sald enclosure for supporting a smoking tray thereabove such that the latter constitutes a removable cover for said enclosure.
Signed at Philadelphia, count of Philadel hia, State of Pennsylvania, t is 8rd day of anuary, 1927.
