This invention relates to pumps and more particularly to motor-driven propeller pumps having a fairing cone and guide vanes in the discharge portion thereof, and it has for an object to provideA a fairing cone and ide vanes of the character designated whic may serve in the capacity of a shut-oflt` valve for the pump as is desirable with certain types of washing machines. It has for a further object to provide apparatus which shall effectively prevent Huid leakage between the pump and the motor. The above and other objects will be more manifest from the following specification and drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic View, partially in section and partially in elevation of 'a -washing' apparatus embodying my 4invention; Figure 2 is a detail view, in section, of

The present invention relates to a motor driven propeller pump particularly adapted for emptying a fluid receptacle. As shown, the fluid receptacle may be a dish-washing machine and, for brevity in this specification, may be hereinafter referred to as such. Apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention is particularly adapted for use with mechanical washin machines of the character forming the subject matter of my co-pending application, Serial No. 307,705, filed June 30, 1919, and assigned to The Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company. In washing machines of this type, it is desirable to effect both the washing operation and the emptying of the receptacle by means of the motor operating the ma chine. This result is obtained in the present instance, by embodying the fairing cone and guide vanes in the form of 'a valve of the butterily type which is preferably e'ccentrically pivoted in the discharge portion of the pump and located adjacent to the propeller operating therein. This arrangement permits the pump and valve to occupy a small space without detriment tothe. efficiency of the apparatus. Thus, the length which would ordinarily be occupiedby'the guide vanes is saved, thls being particularlydesirable in the vertical design of pump shown. The vanes and the cone hub'portion associated thereparts which are with function as a shut-oif valve when the machine is emptied of Waste fluid by the pump operatin the machine.
Referring togFigures 1 and 2 of the drawlng for a more detailed description of apparatus. embodying my invention, I show a washing machine in which 10y indicates a 'washing receptacle with a lid 11 and supports 12. Washing fluid may be supplied to the washing machine at the lower portion thereof through a nipple 13.- The washing, fluid is distributed to the utensils to be washed by means of a centrally disposed vertical spray pipe 14. Secured to the bottom of the casing 10 at the lower portion thereof and receiving the conduit 13,`is a specially designedV cup-shaped receptacle 15. The receptacle 15 has provided at the central portion thereof a hollow casing portion 16 supported by ribs 17 and the nipple 13, all of which may preferably bemade in one casting. The arrangement of the receptacle is such that the central portion forms a pump casing having. the inlet portion open to the receptacle 15 and the discharge portion communicating directly with the spray pipe 14.
The lower portion of the receptacle 15 is arranged to receive the motor and pump preferably of the propeller type. As shown, a propeller 18 is located in the inlet portion of the casing 16, said propeller being supported by a motor casing 18', the motor being directly connected to the propeller by a shaft 19. That portion of the motor casing extending into the cup-shaped receptacle is provided with vanes4 20 to cause an even flow of fluid to the propeller 18. The motor casing 18 is'detachably secured to the lower portion of the cup-shaped re ceptacle 15 in any suitable manner, as for eX- ample, by thumb screws 21. The. above arrangement permits lthe pump and motor parts to be readily moved for the pur ose of cleaning and repair. That portion o the motor casing 18 carrying the propeller shaft 19 lis provided, with a space 21 to accommodate a suitable packing for the shaft. As shown, felt washers 22 are placed in the space 21" and held in place'by a spring 23 and a nut device 24. To prevent seepage of fluid to the motor and to provide ample lun brication, the felt washers 22 are impregnated with graphite or'other suitable lubricant.
' To prevent further fluid leakage from entering the motor, I mount a shield disc on the propeller shaft 19 so that any fluid leaking past the felt washers will be thrown off and drained out through an opening in the motor casing. i
Located in the discharge portion Iof the pump casing 16 is a guide vane structure 30 lmounted in an off-set position and embodycone 31 adapted to prevent` currents and to facilitate the handlinging a fairing edd of arge quantities of fluid. The resilient means may be operated lin any suitable manner as, 'for example, by a cable Having thus described an apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention, the operation thereof is .as follows: The washing receptacle 10. may be lledwith washing fluid in any manner or from any convenient pressure source through the niple 13 and the washing operation is effected Y sufficient force to enable the small jets to loosen food particles adhering to the `utensils inthe washing machine. `The washing fluiddrains down to the cup-shaped receptacle 15 and is repeatedly pumped through the spray pipe 14 unt-ilthe utensils are clean. When the washing operation is completed, the cable 35 -is pulled slightly, and the vane' structure 30, being eccentrically pivoted, the pressure of fluid delivered by the pump is unequally distributed on the vane surface and immediately causes the vanes 30 to-rotate and to close the entrance to the spray pipe 14, thereby increasing the discharge'pressureof the pump. Thus the waste vfluid is expelled from the receptacle through the nipple 13- and when empty, the resilient device 33 returns `the valve 30 to its normal position to function as a fairing cone and guide vanes. The above operation may then be repeated, `using clean'water to effect the rinsing of the wasliedutensils. The arrangement described is particularly desirable as it enables the washing lmachine to bereadily emptied and filled without han- (lling the washing or waste fluids used in the washing and in rinsing operations.
While I have shown my invention in but `one form, it will be obvious to those skilled in thefart that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various other changes. and modifications without departing from the spiritV thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only 26 provided l forcing the fluid through the spray pipel 14 with ber,

What I claim is:
1. In combination in a washing machine having a collectin chamber for washing fluid and a vertical y disposed pump casing within the collecting chamber, and a detachable ,motor and propeller unit supported b the bottom ofthe collecting chamber in suc a manner that 'the propeller operates within the pump casing-to pump va fluid from the collecting chamber.

In la washing machine havinga washing chamber and a vertically arranged spray Ypipe therein the combination of a collecting chamber having a vertically arranged inner casing supported in the collecting chamber, said inner casing arranged to communicate directly with the spray pipe and the collecting chamber, motordriven pump means supported by the collecting chamber and located in the inner casing, a conduit passing through the collecting chamber and com municatingwith the inner casing, and means pivoted in the inner casing and adapted to function as a fairing cone and guide vanes for the pump during the washing operation and a shut-,olf valve to direct waste fluid through the f'conduit for emptying of the washing machine by the motor pum means.
