This invention relates to rock drills, but more particularly to a mounting for supporting a plurality of rock drills of the drifter type.
The objects of the invent-ion are to enable a pair of rock drills to be supported in parallel spaced relation with respect to each other, toieiiable such rock drills to be advanced and retracted from the work as a unit, and to facilitate the operation of drilling and minimize the expense thereof whenever the work requires a series of closely spaced drill holes along a straight line, as for instance, in quarrying operations in which it is desired to remove the rock inv dimension blocks.
The usual form of procedure in removing rock by means of breaching steels is to first drill a series of closely spaced holes and after the desired number of holes have been drilled, to substitute broaching steels for the drill steel and thereby cut away the Walls between adjacent holes. ever, this method of quarrying has been confined largely to cuts in which the drilling apparatus could be maintained in substantially a vert-ical position, as the apparatus which has made this type of quarrying possible has been found to bel inadequate for severing the roel: along a vertical face. The present invention is particularly though not exclusively adapted to support the drills in the positions necessary for forming such cuts and contemplates the use of a suitable mounting clamped to the drills and cooperate slidably with the usual type of rock drill shell and its feed screw, whereby the inounting together with the drills may beadvanced and retracted with respect to the work.

Referring to the drawings in which is illustrated a practical application of the invention, A andB designate a pair of rock drills of the drifter type having the usual Heretofore, how-` feed screw lugs C. On opposite sides of the feed screw lugs C are located the guide ribs D which extend longitudinally of the cylinder E. The rock drills A and B may be ofy any conventional type in which the cylinder E, a front head F and a back head G- and other parts comprising the casing of the drill are held securely in operative positio-n by a pair of spring pressed side bolts H disposed on opposite sides of the drill.
In the front head F is disposed a drill steel J and at the rearward end of the back head are indicated the water tube parts K which may be of any well known type for introducing cleansing liquid through the drill steel J, thence into the drill hole for re moving the detritus therefrom, E
In accordance withv the present invention, means are provided for supporting the rock drills A yand B in parallel spa-ced relation with respect to each other and in such manner that both drills may be advanced towards the work as a unit. These means coinprise a carriage designated by L having a body portion O oneach side of which are a pair of lateral bearingsy l?. The bearings P `may be suitably spaced with respect to each other to accommodate the particular size and type of drills for which the mounting is intended and these bearings in the present instance are provided with grooves@ for the reception of the guide iibs D carried by the rock drill cylinders E.`
Suitable means are provided for clamping the feed sci'ew lugs C firmly against the rearward bearings P. These means consist in the present instance of a plate R of such proportions as to enable said plate to overv lap and engage the rearward ends of both of the feed screw lugs C. The plate R has an aperture S for the reception of a bolt T which extends through a lug U on the rearward end of the carriage bodyr O.l Anut V is threaded on the rearward end of the bolt T to clamp the plate R securely against the ,lugsv on the rearward projecting end "f the feed screw nut c. With the `drills thus disposed on the carriage L, the plate R maybe placed in position to lie against the rearward surfaces ofthe feed screw lugs C. Thereafter, thenut V may be threaded on the bolt lf to press the plate R lirn'ily against lthe feed `screw lugs C and thus clamp the carriage L and the rock drills A and B securely a gainst vrelative movement.
After the rock drillsand the carriage have been lassembled in the manner described, `the assembly may be placedin the "shell W so that the guide ribs X` of the'carriage L will be in slidable `engagement .with Vthe guideways Y of said shell.` :Bythus arranging -these parte, the feed *nut c will bein `the*correct position to Areceive the feed screw e in the usual manner. The `apparatus will then be in readiness for use and may he mounted on a suitable column or other support for the purpose described.
