GAS BURNER.
Application filed January 28, 1927, Serial No.164,292. Renewed April t, 1928.
This invention has for its object, the'provision of novel means for combining air and gas, under the action of steam, in order to produce a fuel, and the specific improvements lie in the burner hereinafter claimed, that feature having been divided out of my co-pending application for Letters Patent.
on a gas regulator and burner, tiled July 1, 1926, Ser. No. 119,892.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construct-ion hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in longitudinal section, a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is an end elevation;
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Figure 1. i
The device includes a casing 1 comprising a body 2 and an enlarged tubular end 3, there being a transverse shoulder 4 within the end 3, and the casing 1 being supplied with a circumferential chamber 5, located to the rear of the shoulder 1, the casing be ing equipped with longitudinal bores 6, communicating with the chamber 5, and opening through the shoulder 4. Steam under pressure is supplied to the chamber 5 by means of pipes 7, which are threaded into the casing, the pipes communicating with the chamber 5. If desired, one of the pipes 7 may be taken out, and its place may be occupied by a closure plug (not shown), this being a detail well within the skill of a mechanic, and calling for no specific delineation.
The casing 1 has a second internal shoulder 8, against which abuts a pipe section 9, held in place by set screws 10 which are threaded into the casing 1. Another pipe section 11 is inserted within the part 3 of the casing 1, and abuts against the shoulder 4.,
the section 11 being of greater diameter than the section 9, and being held in place by set: screws 12 threaded intothe part 3.
The pipe section 11 is of considerably larger diameter than the pipe section ,9, so that there exists,'l;ietween the forward end of the pipe section 9 and the surrounding pipe section 11, a space 14, into which pro cct jet nozzles 15 which are threadedinto the bores 6.
The casing 1 terminates at its rear end in v a wrench head 16. In: advance of the wrench head 16, the casing lhasanydesired number of air inlet openings 17, adapted to register more or less with 'open ings 18 in a collar valve 19 which is mounted .rotatably on the casing 1, in abutment with r the wrench head 16.
The numeral 20 marks a valve housing connected by a pipe 21 with the rear end of the casing 1. A fuel supply pipe 26 is connected at with the housing 20 and preferably is located about at right angles to the pipe 21. A valve 30 controls the flow of fuel through the pipe 26 into the pipe 21, the valve being under the control of an operating mechanism 83. The valve and attendant parts are not described in great detail, because they are claimed in my copending application 119,892, here-inbefore alluded to.
In practical operation, gas delivered through the pipe 26 passes, under the governance of the valve 30, through the pipe 21, and an increment of air is delivered into the gas, through the holes 17 and 18, it being possible to shift the collar damper 19 circumterenti ally, so as to regulate the amount of air that is delivered. The steam, proceeding through the pipes 7, under pressure, enters the ring chamber 5, and flows through the jet nozzles 15 at high speed, asuction being created on the pipe section 9, and the mix ture of air and gas being drawn into the tube 11., at the outer end of which, the gas will burn.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a casing having an internal shoulder and provided with a ring chamber located to the rear of the shoulder, the casing having an air inlet opening disposed to the rear of the ring chamber, a forward burner tube in the easing and. located in front of the shoulder, a pipe section in the casing and of less diameter than the burner tube, the forward end of the pipe section extending into the rear ing and located in front of the forward shoulder, means for holding; the burner tube removably in the casing, a pipe sectionin the casing and of less diameter than the burner tube, the rear end of the pipe section abutting against the rear shoulder, and the forward end of the pipe section extending into the rear end of theburner tube,
nozzles in the forward shoulder and disposed about the forward end of the pipe section, the nozzles communicating with the ring chamber, means for holding the pipe sect on'detachably 1n the casing, means for admitting steam to the ring chamber, and
means for admitting fuel to the pipe section. i 3. In a device of the class described, a cas-- ing having an internal shoulder and provided with a rnig chamber located to the rear Of the, shoulder, the casing having an air inlet opening disposed to the rear of the ring chamber, a, damper controlling the opening, a forward burner tube in the casing and located in front of the shoulder, a pipe sec tion in the casing and of less diameter than the burner tube, the forward end of the pipe section extending into the rear end of the burner tube, nozzles in the" shoulder and dis posed about the forward end of the pipe section, the nozzles communicating with the ring chamber, means for admittingsteam to the ring chamber, a fuel conduit connecting:
to one end of the casing and discharging into the pipe section, and a valve in the'fuel conduit. a i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I
have hereto affixed my signature. ALEXANDER T. GARDEN.
