UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PROTECTOR.
Application filed June 12, 1926.
This invention relates to improvements in protecting devices especially designed to enclose a live electric conductor wire, for the protection of workmen employed around or above the wire.
Another "object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above charac ter which is simple of construction, cfiicient in use and may be readily applied to or removed from a wire.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings v Figure l is a plan view of the invention partly broken away.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is an end view.
Figure 4 is an enlarged section taken substantially on the line -ll of Figure 2 with the protector shown by dotted lines in open position.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the protector is shown as formed of a pair of complemental members 10 which are preferably constructed of wood. These members are longitudinally channeled as shown at 11 and arehingedly connected together as at 12, so that the channels may be arranged in opposed relation to provide a longitudinal passage or chamber 13 which is open at each end. The members 10 may be of any suitable length and any desired number of hinges may be used. The channels 11 are lined with mica or other insulation 14: and are preferably coated or painted with a moisture-proof paint or solution. Suitable insulation 15 is preferably interposed between the hinges and the member 10 and the opposite face or top of these members is preferably provided with a rubber or other insulated cover 16. Thus. when the protector is used to cover conductor wires when placing beams or timbers above the same, there will be practically no chance of the workmen receiving a shock.
Each member 10 has secured thereto a han- Serial No. 115,589.
dle 17. hcse handles are relatively inclined and have interposed therebetween a spring 18, the latter acting to yieldingly force the members in closed position. In order to hold the members closed there is provided alatch 19 which has one of its ends pivot-ally secured to one of the members 10 and its opposite end shaped to pr vide a hook for removable engagei-nent over a stud 20.
One end of the protector is recessed as at 21 to accommodate a trolley wire clamp.
The invention susceptible of various changes in itstorm, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:-
1. A protector for electric conductors comprising a pair of elongated longitudinally channeled members, means hingedly connecting said members whereby the channels may be arranged in opposed relation to provide an elongated passage open at each end and including top, bottom and side walls, the top wall being recessed at one end to accommodate a trolley wire clamp, an insulated lining for said walls, and a handle for each member.
2. A protector for electric conductors comprising a pair of elongated longitudinally channeled members. means hingedly connecting said members together whereby the lat ter may be moved toward and away from each other and arranged in opposed relation to provide an elongated passage open at each end. and including top, bottom and side walls, the top wall being recessed at one end to accommodate a trolley wire clamp, an insulated lining for said walls, a handle depending from the side wall of each member, said handles being arranged in diverging relation, a coil spring connecting said handles, a pivoted latch carried by the top wall of one member, and means carried by the top wall of the other member to be engaged by said latch for holding said members associated.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE ALBERT MILL VA RD.
