UNITED STATES JOSEPH I. MANICK, OF MCDONALD, PENNSYLVANIA.
SIGNAL 1201:.
Application filed November 26, 1924, Serial No. 752,452. Renewed December 6, 1927.
suitable indicia thereon so that when a compartment is illuminated the indicia may be seen by the drivers of other vehicles to indicate to them the intention of the driver of the vehicle on which the signal box is mounted.
A very important object of the invention is to provide a signal box of this nature having an extremely simple structure one which will be efficient, reliable, exceedingly inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other ob jects in view as will appear as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the signal box embodying the features of my invention Figures 2 and 3 are sections taken substantially on lines 22 and 33 respectively of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the box.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the box consists of a bottom wall 1, top wall 2, end walls 3, a rear wall a, front panel 5, and partitions 6. The bottom and top walls 1 and 2 are provided at their forward edges with flanges 7- extending angularly therefrom, the flange on the top wall extending downwardly while the flange on the bottom wall extends upwardly for the purpose of holding the front panel 5. The end walls 3 are provided at their ends with inwardly extending flanges 8 riveted to the top and bottom walls as at 9. The rear wall 4 is provided at its ends with forwardly extending triangular shaped flanges 10 which are riveted to the end walls as at 11. The partitions 6 have flanges 12 at their rear edges fixed to the rear wall 4 thereby forming a plurality of compartments C as is indicated to advantage in Figure 2. A suitable source of illumination is provided in each of these compartments preferably in the form of an incandescent bulb l5 mounted in a conventional form of socket 16. extended through the rear wall into the respective compartments.
The front panel 5 is transparent and is held in place by the partition 6 and flanges 7. As is shown in Figure 1 there is printed,
painted, or otherwise provided on thetransparent panel 5 suitable indicia such as a word or emblem before each compartment so that when said compartment is lighted the indicia on the panel before the compartment may be read easily so as to indicate the in tention of the driver of the vehicle on which this signal box is mounted.
In mounting the signal box I desire to use an L-shaped bracket 17 including an arm 18 fixed to the bottom wall 1 of the box and an arm 19 having a plurality of openings 20 through which bolts or the like may pass to attach this arm to some convenient portion of the vehicle. It will be apparent from the above that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a signal box which may be cheaply manufactured, and which will be durable and effective under all conditions, and which is so not liable to readily get out of order. The structure also embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above deincluding a longitudinal fiat bottom plate having an upwardly extending flange on its forward edge, a top plate arranged in parallel position with the bottom plate and provided with a downwardly extending flange on its forward edge, a pair of end Walls having their upper and lower edges bent to provide right angular flanges overlapping the upper and lower plates and connected thereto, a rear Wall having its ends 10 bent to form flanges overlapping the end Walls and rigidly secured thereto, and a transparent panel positioned against the forward flanges of the top and bottom plates.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOSEPH P. MANICK.
