COMBIN'ATION PADLOCK.
Application filed April 28, 1927. Serial No. 187,245.
The invention relates to combination padlock and has for its general object to provide a lock of the indicated type improved in various particulars with a view to effect a secure locking of the same, to
prevent or to -to provide for-changing the com when desired, with facility.
A further important object of th tion is to provide a character so forme makediflicult the opening of parties, as well as bination e invenlock of the indicated d and arranged as to fa .cilitate the assembling and disassembling of the parts.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features an d advantages will Reference is to drawings forming tion, it being understoo are merely illustrative o invention.

invention in practice in accordance with ample, a housing 15 is the medialplane to provide afront housing 88(313101'123 and a rear housing section 123. The front housing section has a zero mark or indicator 16 thereon near {the periphery and is provided interiorly with a trip lug 17. See Figures 1, 11 and 12. A shackle 18 is provided with a locking bolt 19 to move in unison with themovements of the shackle. Said bolt 19 is swiveled by a sleeve 20 to the inner end of the shank of the shackle 18 and has a lateral bolt or lockingfiange 21 formed with a broad tongue 22. A front hub section 24 is provided and formed with a flange 25 and a matinghub section 26 extends through the rear housing section 123 and provided with-a flange 27. The hub section 2 1 has a transverse slot 28 whichis adapted to receive a corresponding projection 29 on the hub section 26. The front hub section 2 1 is formed with a vertical slot 30, and a registering slot 31 is formed in the projection 29, said slots 30 and 31 being adapted to accommodate the bolt fiange'21 and its tongue 22. v
In the sides of the hub section 24 are grooves 32 and registering grooves 33 are formed in the sides of projection 29. Said grooves 32, 33 are adapted to receive fork members. 34011 the plate 35, which is provided for the purpose of holding the hub sections inassembled position and preventing displacement thereof, and preventing the dismembering of the lock. The plate 35 ;is tightly but removably held inthe flange of the rear casing section 123, as indicated at 36 in Figures'2 and 3.
I have shown three permutation disks bearing the designations respectively 37, 38, 39, the innermost disk being numbered 37, and the outermost The lug 17 is p'ositioned between two adjacent teeth of disk 37 in the plane of said disk. Said innermost disk 37 has one olfset tooth 40, disposed toward the adjacent intermediate disk 38. Said innermost disk and the outermost disk 39 have slots 4:3 to receive the tongue 22 of bolt 19 in one position of the bolt. Also the disk 37 i has blind recesses le at the eye'or bore thereof, which the tongue 22 will enter in an unauthorized attempt to open the lock. The numeral i5 indicates a slot the Miterprovided divided 5 in one offset lug at mediate disk 38 to be brought into register with the slots 43 when the bolt 19 is in the operation of locking the lock. The intermediate disk 38 has teeth 41, 42, ofiset oppositely from the general plane of said disk, the one tooth being adapted to be engaged by the'offset tooth 40 on disk 37 and the other tooth 42 being adapted to engage the the inner side of the outermost disk 39.
In front of the front housing section 23 is a dial 50 held by the flange 25 of the front hub section A ball 46 looselyset in the dial 50 is adapted to successively engage in any of the annular series of depres- SlOIlS 47 in the housing section 23. A second hall 48 is adapted to engage in a single depression 49 in the housing section 23.
In the operation of bringing the slots 43, 45, of the respective permutation disks in register for opening the lock, the following occurs. The front housing section 23 is turned and the turning, owing to the engagement of the lug 17 between two adjacent teeth, turns the disk 37 which by engagement of its tooth 40 with a tooth 41 or 42, causes said disk 38 to be also turned, and since the outermost disk 39 is similar to 37 as regards oil'set tooth corresponding with the tooth 40, the other ofiset tooth of disk 38 will cause said disk 39 to turn. In aligning the slots 43 of the innermost disk 37 and outermost disk 39 with the slot 45 of the intermediate disk, and the intermediate disk having picked up and caused to turn the front disk 39, the three disks turn with the housing section 23 until the slot 43 in the innermost disk is in register with the slots 30, 31 of the hub section. The housing section 23 is then turned counter-clockwise one turn, in order to pick up the intermediate d sk 38. After the slot 45 of the interme dlate disk has been aligned with the slots 30, 31, it is necessary to turn clockwise and align the first or outermost disk 39 so that the slots 43, 45 of all three disks are in register. In aligning the disks as ,described by touch to register the various slots43, 45 with the slots 30, 31 of the hub sections, the touch or feehof the operator on the ball 46 will determine the number of graduations of the dial oyer which the ball 46 is caused to travel in a given partial turn of housing section 23, the operator being enabled to determine by feel the engagement of the ball 46 with the successive depressions 47. The start of the movement in turning the dial is with the ball 46 in radial alignment with the zero mark or projection 16.
In changing the combination, the shackle is moved outwardly to bring the tongue 22 of bolt 19 in the outer position shown in F lgure 4 and extending into the slots 43. {it this time the shackle and its bolt 19 are In the unlocked position, Then the plate engagement between A great number of changes in is displaced to disengage its fork members 24 from the side recess 32, 33. The hub sections may now be separated axially, exposing the inner permutation disk 37. A
limited number of changes in the combina- 7 tion may be made by changing the point of p the lug 1.7 and the teeth of disk 37. the combination may be made by removthe disks 38, 39, and varying the particular teeth that are bent out of the general plane to be engaged by the lug 40. That is to say, the offset tooth 40 may be variously selected for offsetting, and the offset teeth 41 may be varied as to their position so that the said offset teeth 41, 42, bear a particular relation to the slot 45, or the tooth 40 may be caused to bear a given relation to the slot 43.
When the ball 48 is at the single depression 49 the ball 46 will be adjacent the Zero mark 16.
In the plate 35 is a slot 51 (see Figures 2, 3 and 4) which is in register with the central slots 30. 31 in the hub sections 24, 26, to permit the entrance oi the flange 21 of bolt 19 and the tongue 22 in the operation of opening the lock.
The numeral 52 indicates washers disposed between the permutation disks 37, {38. 39,
said washers havingslots 53 adapted to register with the slots of the permutation disks when the lock is opened. On each washer 52 at the interior is a lug 54 adapted to enter the vertical slot 30 in the hub section 24, as shown in Figure 4, to prevent turning of the washers.
I would state "furthermore that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment oi the invention, 1 do not limit myself strictly to the erect details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
