SCREEN GUARD.
ama filed October 6, 1927. Serial No. 224,391.
This invention relates to an improved guard especially designed for use upon a window screen, the same having more particular reference to a structure which is adapted particularly to serve as a weather shield.
Briefly, the invention has reference to a frame which is adapted to be attached to the frame of the screen together with apair of hingedly mounted plates carriedby this frame, these plates being constructed so that their inner adjacent ends overlap providing a substantially weather-proof joint. Means is provided whereby these plates may be swung outwardly to open position in such a relationship as to facilitate ventilation, yet prevent entrance of the elements.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an outside elevation of the structure showing the plates closed.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the same with the plates open.
Figure 3 is a perspective view with these plates swung open.
Referring now to the drawingsby numerals, it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates generally the screen of the ordinary wire screen mesh 2 and marginal frame 3. As beforesaid, the improved attachment comprises a frame 4 which is preferably of metal and this is fastened in any suitable way to the wooden frame of the screen. By preference, however, the right hand end bar of this metal frame 4 is permanently fastened to the corresponding bar of the screen frame. The opposite end portion however, is not attached directly inv this way to the screen frame. Instead, I provide a pair of clips 5 which fit over the frames 3 and 4, the clips being provided with set screws (see Fig. 2) by means of which the two frames are clamped firmly together. Incidentally, this allows the device to be applied to the type of screen made up in adjustable or extensible fashion. Hingedly connected as at 6 to the top and bottom bars of the metal frame, we find a pair of complemental plates 7 and 8. Theup er plate 7 is comparatively larger than he lower one and is provided on its lower edge with an offset portion 9 which is adapted to overlap the corresponding end of the plate 8. Both of these plates are formed on one side with a bracket 10 with which toothedv bars 11 are pivotally connected. This bar extends through alined openings in the frames3 and 4 and obviously serves to hold the1 plates extended as shown in Figures 2 an 3.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have evolved and produced a novel attachment for a window screen which can be applied to the outside of the screen in a manner to serve as a weather guard and protector in storms and wind. In light rains, however, the .sections are placed that the guards can be so adjusted as to permit free ventilation and simultaneously operate as sun shields. It is believed that the invention will be quite clear after considering the foregoing. Therefore, a more lengthly description is believed unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape or size coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
I claim 1. In a structure of the class described, in
combination, an ordinary window screenf and a guard attachment therefor, said guard attachment comprising a frame adapted to be fastened to the frame of the screen, and a pair of complemental hingedly mounted plates together with adjusting and retaining means therefor.
2. As a new product of manufacture, a
guard attachment for a window screen c0mprising a frame, a pair of substantially rectangular plates adapted to be disposed in overlapping relationship, hinges connecting said plates with the top and bottom bars of said frame, toothed adjusting and retaining bars connected with said plates and extending through openings in one of the vertical bars of the frame, and a clip for adjustably connecting the frame to the screen frame.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CALVIN EMERT KAUFMAN.
