UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VARIABLE CONDENSER.
Application med :une 5, 1924. seriai No. Y717,969.
'f denser constructed inv such a in anner as'to prevent the possibility .ofv contact of t1i'e:,in` tei-leaving plates and substantiallyv increasing the amount of plate space foijholding the electrons and protons, accomplishing e this ina reduced space thereby increasing the efiieiency iii the handling of E. M. F. as compared to the condeiisers of the prior art.
My device is also adapted to accomplish the result of two condensers iii-one both in volume of E. M. F. and inl the .variationfo'f the possible adjustments in regardtliereto. In this way my device .obvi'ates the necessity of a Vernier attachment. as the divisioiiof the rotor members into quarterfspherical concentric plates permits of veryv tine adjustments, each rotor beingv independently operated and adjusted. y i
Referring to the drawings Figure 1-.s an illustrative cross vertical section "showing the shafts and one of each of the'cup mem# bers of the rotor and stator series in the interleaved position. Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of my device on the line 2 2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Figure 4. Figure 4 is a perspective of the middle slotted shaft. Figure 5 is a perspective of the outer slotted shaft broken away for convenience inV illustration. Figure 6 is a vertical section on the line G-G of Figure 5. Figure 7 is a detail of the electrical connections shown at the left'hand end of Figure 2.
In the drawings 1() is a central 'shaft to which is -i'igidly secured concentrically a series of quarter spherical cup members 11 and said shaft 10 has the usual rotor handle 12 also rigidly secured thereto. A cylindrical insulating member 13 is adapted to slide over said shaft 10 and an intermediate hollow cylindrical shaft 14 is adapted to be mounted over `said .shaft l() and the insulatingr member 13 and to said shaft 14 is rigidly secured coiicentrically a second series of quarter spherical cup members 15 and a rotor handle 16 is rigidly secured to the outer end of said shaft 14. The shaft 14 has slots 17 permitting the quarter spherical cup members 11 to pass therethrough and rotate'asl may be desired. An insulating member 18 is mounted over said hollow cylindrical shaft 14 and an outer hollow cylindrical shaft 19 is mounted over saidA insi'ilatingmember 18 and the shaft 14. A series ofuconcentric quarter spherical cup members 20 rigidlymounted on one Side ofsaid shaft 1 9 and a 'second series of concentric quarter spherical cup members 21 'is rigidly mounted on vthe opposite side'of said shaft I19 in a position'diametrically opposed to the first series of cup members 20. The shaft 19 is slotted at 22 and 23 to provide for the passagev through and them'oveinents ofthe two series of,l quarter spherical cup members ,11 and 15 andvsaid shaftv19 is a fixed shaft: which is.not adapted to move but isa stator shaft. i
,In .assembling my device central shaft 10 will`ha've cylindrical insulating member 13 mounted thereover. 'Intermediate hollow cylindrical shaft` 14 will then bev mounted thereover and cylindrical insulating member. 1S will be mounted thereover. i Outerhollow stator cylindrical shaft 19` will then be mounted thereover, The shaft 10, insulating member'13, hollow' cylindrical" shaft 14," insulatingmember 18 and outer cylindrical shaft 19 lwill .in' this way be assembled in their proper positions before the quarter spherical cup members are mounted.v Shaft 14 has slots 17 and shaft 19 has slots 22 and 23, all of which permit the described movement ofthe quarter'spherical cup members 11 and 15 and said spherical cup members 11 and 15 will be rigidly secured to said shafts 10 and 14 respectively in the usual and well known manner through slots 17 of shaft 14 and slots 22 and 23 of'shaft 19, the
insulatingr members 13 and 18 having the necessary slots in alignment with the aforementioned slots as shown in the drawing. The quarter spherical cup members 20 and 21 will then be rigidly mounted in the usual well known manner to the shaft 19 in the positions as described and shown in the drawing.
On the end of the shaft 19 opposite to the rotor handles 12 and 16 is adapted to be mounted by means of a nut 24 insulated by the outer annular insulation member 25 and by means of a nut 26 insulated by means of the inner annular insulation member 25 and also by `annular insulation member 27, electrical terminal connections of usual construction 22* which connects with the stator cup members 20, and 23* which connects with the rotor cup members 11 and 15.
The operation of my device is most simple and the series of rotor cup members 15 may be turned into the full interleaved position with the stator cup members 20 as shown in Figure 1 by lmeans of turning the handle 16 so that they are in the position shown in Figure 1 and the rotor cup members 11 may be turned in'a similar manner into full inter'leaved position with the stator cup member`s21 as also shown in Fi ure 1 by the turning of the 4handle 12. ither of the series of cup members 15 or 11 may be left in the o'pen or non-interleaved position as shown' in dotted outline in connection with the rotor cup members '15 in Figure 1 and the other series of rotor cup members turned until the .position desired is found or if it is'desired the two handles 12 and 16 may be turned together so that the rotor cup members 11 and 15 may be turned simultaneous ly. It is thusse'en that many variations may be effected by means of my device as the two series of rotor cup members 11 and 15 may be' operated together or separately and when one series has been adjusted the other maybe very slightly .turned in 'order to effect the result usuallyobtained by means of a vernier. y
Many other means than vthose shown may be usedfor carrying out the invention described and claimed.withoutdeparting from the 'spirit'ol said invention as the device shown illustrates merely one way of carrying out my invention.
My device4 is adapted to elect a low loss, that is the construction is such as to reduce the leakage of electric Iradio current in a very substantial manner as compared with the prior art devices, thereby increasing the efficiency of the condenser. It is also apparent that the construction of my device is such as tovmake it more dust proof and moisture 4proof than the flat plate type of condenser of the prior art and the encasing of my device in a glass outer container would make it absolutely dust and moisture proof. Through the usual operation of my device greater selectivit is possible, more distance and a remarka le increase in volurne, all of which are most essential feature, in the operation of a radio receiving set.
I claim:
