An object of the invention is to provide a reel adapted to be put on and taken off, a spindle or shaft and having means for cooperating with thespindle whereby when put on the spindle it is automaticall locked in position and relative movement oth longitudinal and rotative between the reel an the spindle is prevented Another object of the invention is to provide a reel composed entirely of sheet metal elements which may be easily stamped or otherwise formed so that the cost of constructing the reel is low and a reel of light weight is obtained.
Another object of the invention is to provide a reel in which the inner end. of the film may be secured to the hub "easily and readily and thereel loaded with facility.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further resides in the details and features of construction more particularly pointed out in the following description of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, which show by way of illustration and example the preferred embodiment 0 this invention and to the details of which I do not intend to be confined, the invention is disclosed as exemplified in a reel which comprises two side discs or flanges 11 and 12 spaced and supported by a hub 13 which is provided with tongues 14 extendlng tight- 1y into slots 15 in the discsor flanges. The discs or flanges are formed of sheet metal and preferably have a series of large apertures 16 extending in a general circular di rection around their axis. One of the apertures in the side of one of the discs is elongated in the directionof the axi'sor center of the disc as indicated at 18 to expose the end of .the slot 17 so that the inner end of the film may easily be slid'into the slot and secured within the hub member in any suitable way. Meansare provided for mounting the reel on a driving shaft or spindle'li), which in the embodiment ofthe invention illustrated is preferably in the form of a rectangular core member comprising a channel element 20 and a plate element 21, the latter being adapted to form the upper side of the rectangular core member. It will be understood that the invention may be practiced with a core of any number of sides and is not limited to a four sided core. The ends of the elements 20 and 21 are provided with lips or tongues 22 which are adapted to be bent over on the exterior of the s1de flan es or discs and serve the dual purpose of aiding rigidity to the resulting reel and reventing movement of the elements 20 an 21 with respectto the side disc. As will be noted from Figure 3, the elements 20 and 21 also are each composed of sheet metal and the element 21 has a transverse ridge t 0 channel shaped element 20 are provided with slots 24, for the accommodation of the ridge 23, when theelements 20 and 21 are assembled in the reel. In the form of the invention illustrated, the reel is adapted to fit on the rectangular end 25 of the s indle or shaft 19 and by f reason of the mu ti-sided construction of the core of the reel and the end of thespindle relative rotative movement between the spindle and the reel is prevented and the spindle and reel rotate as a unit; The spindle is also preferably rovided with a collar 26 forming a shoul er against which the reel abuts when slid upon the end ofthe spindle.
One side of the rectangular end of the spindle has a transverse slot 27 into which the ridge 23 snaps when the reel is mounted in service on the spindle. The element 21 being no without interference by composed of sheet metal has sufiicient resiliency and yields suificiently to permit the reel to he slid .on the end of the spindle the ridge 23.
When the reel is placed upon the spindle, the ridge 23 snaps into the slot 27 and provides a locking means for preventing longitudinal movement of the reel with respect to the spindle. The locking engagement of the ridge and slot can however be broken by the application of suficient force to over- .come the resilient tendency of the element 21 to hold the ridge in the slot and the reel may be taken ofi the spindle without diificulty.
It will thus be seen that there is provided in this invention a construction which is simple in character, of low manufacturing cost, and of light weight and yet one which is efiicient, rugged and adapted for severe conditions of service.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction described but that various alterations and modifications may be made in the embodiment illustrated without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A reel comprising two spaced side discs, a core member between said discs, said core member being composed of a plurality of sides of sheet metal to adapt it for disposition on a multi-sided spindle, and a projection on the interior of the core member adapted to snap into a depression on the spindle when the reel is placed on the spindle.
2. A reel comprising two spaced side discs, 9. core member between said discs, said core member being composed of a sheet metal channel element and a plate element, a transverse ridge on the plate element adapted to fit in slots in the upper edges of the channel element and tongues on the ends of'the plate and channel elements bent over on the exterior sides of the discs.
