P. V. VANDEVELDE BURGLAR ALARM Mount-mu Filed April 13. 1926 I 5 7 z 1 7 Wm H INVENTOR B104 1 [40/05/5405 CZ. 7L M ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 24, 1928*.
UNITED PATENT OFFIQE.
PAUL vrc'ron VAHDEVELDE, or conorm, NEW YORK.
BURGLAR-ALARM ar anne.
Application filed April 13, 192 16, Serial R9. 101,654
The circuit cl ser is arran ed usuall in a cavity in the door frame, just beneath the striking plate, in such position that either the latch bolt or the lock bolt or both will engage the closer' to hold it inoperative. Preferably the circuit closer is supported by the same screws or other securing means which hold the Striking plate.
Since all striking plates are not of the same size and shape, difiiculty has been experienced in the proper mounting of the circuit closer, which as before stated is usually arranged between'th'e striking plate and the frame. The closer is held by brackets, which fit beneath. the striking plate, and have open ings registering with the openings thereot'. Since the openings of the plate are not always the same distance apart, the brackets do not always register.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is the provision in connection with an alarm of the character above specified for enabling the closer to be connectedwith the door frame and striking plate, regardless of the size and shape of the plate.
Another object is the provision of a simplified and more eflicient construction of circuit closer.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims ap pended hereto, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims, may be-resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a part hereof:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the circuit closer and striking plate.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are sections on the lines 2-2, 33, and 44 respectively, of Fig. 1.
5 a sectional detail showing an alternate construction of contact member.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the improved circuit closer comprises a late l of suitable material, having at one sidh edge a lateral flange or extension 2, and atthe other edge a lateral extension 3 in the form of block of insulating material, secured to the plate by the screws 4. A pair of plungers 5+6. is supported by the extensions 2 and 3 and slidably mounted therein.
Each of the plungers has 'a reduced. portion sliding inthe extension 3, and coil springs T encircle the reduced portions between the extension and cross pins 8 in the respective plungers.
Lach plunger is rovided with a second cross pin 9 at the remote from the extension. 2, and these pins are adapted to contact with spring contact members 10 supported by the extension The springs act normally to move the plungers' in a direction to ca se the ins 9 to en a e the contact mem-- bers 10, and'the'contact members 9*aud 10 of each plunger are interposed in parallel in an electric circuit containing a signal and a source of electric energy of the character shown in the above mentioned patent. Since the circuit and its connections form no part of the present invention they are not shown. It will be understood, however, that one of the circuit terminals is connected with the plate 1, and the other with the contact members 10, the connection being in parallel as previously stated.
The supporting means for the circuit closer is constituted by a bracket including a. body portion 11 and arms 12 and 13 at its ends extending in opposite directions. The arm 12 is secured to the extension 2 bv a screw 14 as shown, and the arm 13 has an opening adapted to register with an opening at one end of the striking plate 15, the said plate being of usual construction, and having openings for the latch bolt indicated in dotted lines, and the lock bolt 16 of the door lock.
The other end of the circuit closer is supported by a bracket including a body portion 17 and arms 18 and 19 extending in op posite directions from ends of the body. The arm 18 has an opening registering with the opening at the other end of the striking plate, and the openings in the arms 13 and 18 are adapted to receive the screws 20 which connect the striking plate with the door frame.
. Set screws 22 are passed through the slot into engagement with the extension 2, and cross plates 23 are arranged between the heads of the screws and the arm 19 of the bracket, the cross plates extending across the slot, thus to slidably connect the arm 19 with the circuit closer. It will be evident from the description that when the screws 222 are loosened. the bracket 17-1S19 may be adjusted, to bring the opening in the arm 18 thereof in register with the striking plate opening. Thus the circuit closer may be connected with the door frame. regardless of the shape and size otthe said plate, the adjustment enabling the openings in the arms 13 and 18 always to be brought into register with the openings of the striking plate.
In order to prevent turning of the plungers under the influence of the springs 7 and to hold the pins 9 in register with the contact members 10, the cross pins 8 extend through slots 24. in the plate 1.
In Fig. 5 a construction is shown wherein the plunger 25, corresponding to the plunger 5 oi Fig. 1 is arranged to close the circuit by movement under the urge of the bolt. lVith this arrangement the contact member 26 is connected to the lateral extension 27,
and is so arranged. that it will. beengaged by the plunger when it moves under the urge of the bolt. The construction is otherwise the same.
Vrhat is claimed as new is:
A circuit closer for burglar alarm systo the door frame by the connecting means of the striking plate, including brackets for the ends of the support, each bracket consisting of laterally otlset connected portions, one adapted to lie beneath the striking plate and having an opening for the securing means of the striking plate, and the other adapted to lap on the adjacent face of the support and to be secured thereto, securing means for said other portions, the lapping portion of one of the brackets being longitudinally slotted, and the securingmeans passing through the slots to enable adjustment of the bracket for different lengths of striking plates.
Signed at Corona in the county of Queens and State of New York this seventh day of April A. D. 1926.
