AIR CLEANER.
Application filed May 20,
This invention relates to an im roved au tomotive appliance which may e conveniently termed an air cleaner, the same having more particular reference to a device of this class which may be associated either with the carbureter or the crank case. The principal object is to provide a device for separating finer dust particles from the air before it enters the mouth of the intake 19 of the carbureter, or the breather pipe of the crank case as the case may be.
Briefly, the invention comprises a tank of cylindrical form which is provided with a suitable drain at its bottom, and which is open at its top, together with a unit which is insertible through the open top to simultaneously provide an eflicient closure and to bring into play the novel separating means.
The structural features and advantages of the invention derived from the improved construction, will become plainly evident from the reading of the following description in association with the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same Figure 1 is a central vertical section thru an air cleaning device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken approximately upon the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking upwardly.
Fig. 3 is a section in detail taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking downwardly.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates generally the tank which, as before stated, is rovided at its bottom with an appropriate rain closed by a removable screw plug 3. This tank is adapted to contain a predetermined quantity of liquid which in the present instance, is oil, as indirated at 4. The insertible unit is designated generally by the reference character 5 and this, as is shown, comprises a closing plate 6 having an inturned flange 7 which telescopes snugly into the upper portion.
It will be noticed also, that it has a marginal flange extending outwardly beyond the flange 7, and overlying the upper edge of the 1926. Serial No. 110,475.
tank. Carried by this cover plate is an intake tube 8 which extends downwardly into the interior of the tank and into close proximity to the normal level of the oil 4. In addition, the cover plate carries an integral cylindrical outlet 9 which, also depends into the interior of the tank and is provided with supporting arms 10 connected to a conical deflector 11.
Forming a part of this insertible unit are upper and lower screens 12 and 13 respectively, which are connected with bracing and supporting rings 14 and 15 respectively. In order to secure rigidity of construction, the rings 14 and 15 are connected together by vertical pieces 16 and 17. This forms a frame which is carried by the cover plate with the ring appropriately bracin and supporting the screen. While this adds slightly to the cost of manufacture of the device, it nevertheless makes a reliable insert which can be forced down into the tank through the open top and withdrawn without distorting the screen.
In practice, it is obvious that the air to be cleansed passes downwardly through the tube 8, and the screen 13, in contact with the surface of the coil 4, upwardly through the screen 13, and the superposed screen 12. Owing to the suction produced throu h the outlet 9, it is sucked upwardly throng this. The fluid passing through the outlet, however, encounters the baflle cone 11 which tends to relieve the air of excess oil which it may have picked up.
It is believed that by carefullyconsidering the description of the details and the operation, persons familiar with devices of this class will obtain a clear understanding of the invention. For this reason, a. more lengthy description is deemed unnecessary.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been specifically described and claimed, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention as set forth in the annexed claim may be resorted toif desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is As a new product of manufacture, an open top cylinder adapted to contain a predetermined quantity of cleaning liquid, and an insertable unit comprising a cover plate for said supporting structure, one above the said cylinder, anair intake and conducting other, the lower screen being associated with tube depending from said cover plate, an the inner end of the tube and the upper 10 outlet in said cover plate, a deflector cone screen being disposed below the deflector carried by the outlet in spaced relation, a cone. I
skeleton supporting structure depending In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. from the cover plate, and screens carried by ROBERT R. DOLLINS.
