CARD HOLDER.

Application filed April 27, 1927. Serial No. 187,081.

My inventionrelates to card holders, and has particular reference to such a device which is adapted to be secured to a railway car, for receiving and holding the usual Bad order card which is to be attached to the car by the inspector.

An important object of the invention is to provide a card holder which is adapted to securely hold the card against improper or accidental displacement, and which will protect the card from rain, snow or the like.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character having a gravity operated roof element, which not only protects the card from the act-ion of the weather but prevents the displacement of the card, by direct engagement therewith.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during'the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a flat plate, preferably of sheet metal, constituting the back or body portion of the holder. At its ends, this sheet is bent at a right angle, affording legs 6, bent at their inner ends to provide feet 7, which are secured to a box car or the like by screws 8 or other attaching means.

Rigidly attached to the ends of the plate 5 are vertical sockets 9, U-shaped in cross section, secured to the plate 5 by solder or any other suitable means. The sockets 9 are preferably formed of sheet metal and project forwardly beyond the plate 5, and are preferably integral with spaced rods or guards 10, arranged in advance of the plate 5. The rods 10 are horizontally arranged and spaced and are preferably connected by transverse barsll, preferably integral therewith. The bars 10 and 11 and the sockets 9 are preferably one integral stamping.

Horizontal supporting tongues or steps 12 are stamped from the lower edge of the plate 5, and project forwardly beyond the same and are soldered or otherwise attached to the lowermost bar 10. Preferably stamped from the upper portion of the plate 5 are pointed teeth or stops 13, projecting forwardly in a horizontal direction beyond the plate 5, as shown.

The numeral 14; designates a roof element, which is generally circularly curved in cross section, and preferably formed of sheet metal. This roof element is slightly longer than the plate 5, and covers the upper end thereof. The roof element 14 has a lower forward straight portion 15, arranged forwardly of the plate 5, and adapted to directly engage with the card 16, held by the device. The roof element further embodies an upper rear inclined portion 17, extending to the rear of the plate 5, for a substantial distance, thus serving to direct rain or the like from the rear side of the plate 5, The top of the plate 5 is bent to provide a rearwardly projecting angular portion 18, upon which the roof element let is. pivotally mounted by means of hinges 19 or the like. The hinges are arranged within the roof element and hence protected from the weather. The legs 6 are cut away at their tops, forming recesses 20, for receiving the inclined portion 17 when the roof element 14 is swung to the open vertical position.

The ends of the hollow roof element l l are covered by end-plates 21, attached thereto by suitable means, and these end-plates project downwardly below the roof element 14, and have their bottom edges bent upwardly to provide troughs or gutters 22, which are inclined rearwardly, in the normal position, as shown. The roof element 1 1 has a transversely inclined trough or gutter 23 formed upon its forward side, preferably by bending a portion of the material of the roof element, to produce the same. The trough or gutter leads at its ends into the troughs or gutters 22, and extends longitudinally of the roof element 14.

The operation of the device is as follows:

The roof element may be swung from the normal lower position, Figure 4, to a raised position, uncovering the upper portion of the plate 5. The card 16 is then inserted in the holding'means, upon the front of the plate 5, and will rest upon the stops 12, with its upper edge beneath the tongues or stops 13. The roof element is now swung or gravitates forwardly to the lower position and the edge of the portion 15 directly ongages the card 16, clamping the same against the plate 5. This may occur since the sockets 9 have their upper ends terminating a considerable distance beneath the stops 13. If desired the stops 13 may be passed through the top of the card, which may be done, particularly if a narrow card is use. It is thus seen that the card 16 is securely held against movement in all directions. The roof element 14 projects forwardly beyond the plate 5 and covers and protects the front of the card from rain or the like, while the rear portion 17 prevents the rain from passing to the back of the plate 5. The cord may be conveniently removed by inserting a card and provided with aforwardly projecting stop, attaching elements secured to the body portion, and a roof element hinged upon the body portion and covering the same, said roof element. having a part arranged to directly engage with the forward face of the card beneath the stop.

A card holder comprising, a body portion having means upon its forward side for receiving a card, means to attachthe body portion to a car or the like, a roof element hinged upon the upper end of the body portion and projecting forwardly and rear wardly beyond the body portion for a substantial distance, the forward end of the roof element being adapted to directly engage with the card.

8. A card holder comprising, an upstanding substantially flat body portion provided upon its front face with card holding means, stop means carried by the body portion and projecting forwardly beyond the same and arranged above the card holding means; and adapted to engage above the card, and a roof element hinged upon the top of the body portion and having a rear downwardly inclined portion projecting rearwardly beyond the body port-ion and a forward downwardly inclined portion projecting forwardly beyond the body portion, the forward portion of the roof element having its edge adapted to engage with the card between the stop element and the holding means. A card holder comprising, an upstanding body portion provided upon its forward side with card holding means, a roof element hinged upon the top of the body portion and having oppositely inclined portions eX- tending forwardly and rearwardly beyond the body portion, said roof element being provided-with a longitudinal trough and a transverse trough or troughs to conduct the rain or the like from the roofelement.
