IMPROVEMENT IN HOLDERS FOR SEWING-MACHINE QUILTING ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,448, dated August 10, 1875 application filed April 19, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NELSON BARNUM,of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain Improvement in Holders for Quilting Attachments to Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:

Heretofore the device for securing the horizontal sliding rod of the quilting-guide to the sewing-machine has consisted of a solid metal piece with a heavy flange, through which it was secured by a screw to the presser-bar above the presser-foot. The horizontal rod was passed through the solid block, and secured at the desired position by a second screw setting through the solid block upon said rod.

The present invention consists in making the device for securing the quilting-guide to the presser-foot of thin spring sheet metal, bent into such form that the horizontal rod passes through two parts of sheet metal, and is compressed by a spring, which produces friction enough to hold it firmly against displacement by accident, but will allow of its being moved readily to proper adjustment; and, also, in combining this thin sheet-metal holder with the presser foot and bar by attaching it thereto by means of the screw which holds the foot to the bar, by inserting the flange of said sheet-metal holder between the head of the screw and the outer surface of the presser-foot, which the thin material enables me to do.

In this way I greatly cheapen the cost of the holder device, and dispense with two extra screws, producing a contrivance which is at the same time more easily adjusted than the common screw-fastened holder.

In the said drawings, A represents the presser-foot, of a sewing-machine. O is the curved quilter-guide, carried upon the end of the horizontal adjusting -rod D. All these parts are such as are in common use, and therefore need no further'description. E is the holder, which constitutes the material part of this invention. It consists of a piece of spring sheet metal, preferably sheet-brass, bent into the form shown in elevation at Fig. 4, and in plan view at Fig. 5, of the drawing, detached from the other parts. A hole, a, is drilled to pierce both of the parts b d, which is to receive the adjusting-rod D. The part b is prolonged to form a thin flange, e, which is cut with a slot or notch, f, to 'fit over the holding-screw F, which fastens the presserfoot to the presser-bar. The part dot the sheet-metal holder E is prolonged, and bent inward to form a spring, g, which sets against the rod D when the same is inserted, producing sufficient friction to hold the same in place without resort to set-screws.

. Having described my invention, I limit myself to the following claims, which state briefly and separately that which I consider to be my invention, referring to the above specification and the accompanying drawing for explanation.

I claim 1. The sheet-metal holder E, made with the parts b d, pierced to receive the rod D, the part b being prolonged into the flange e, and the part 61 being prolonged and bent to form the spring 9, substantially as specified.

2. The combination and arrangement of the holder E, having the thin sheet-metal flange c, with the presser-bar A, presser-foot B, and screw F, substantially as specified.
