EVENER-MOTION-CONTBOLLED COMBINED DRIVE BETWEEN FINISHING LAPPER AND HOPP R FEEDER.
Application filed October 20, 1926. Serial No. 142,985.
My invention relates to improvements in evener motion controlled combined drives between finishing lapper and hopper feeder and the object of the invention is to devise improved means whereby the automatic feed of the cotton or cotton waste to the finishing. lapper from the hopper feeder is more uniformly controlled, thus resulting in a better, finished lap.
A further object is to bring the hopper feeder and finishing lapper with their drives into a single unit actuated by a single main drive.
' In my United States Patent No. 1,595,466, dated August th, 1926, for a system of lapping cotton, I described and illustrated means for feeding lbose cotton or cotton waste to the finishing lapper. 6 is the main drive belt for the finishing lapper on the pulley 7 secured to the counter shaft 8 which also carries the pulley 9 which isconnected by the belt 10 with the pulley 11 on the finishing lapper beater shaft 12. Av second pulley 13- on the shaft 12 is connected by a belt 14 with the evener motion drive pulley 15 on the shaft 16. The shaft 16 also carries the bevel wheel 17 meshing with the bevel wheel 18 on the longitudinally extending side shaft 19 which carries at its rear end the bevel pinion 20 which meshes with the bevel wheel 21 on the vertical evener motion pulley shaft 22. 23 is a conical pulley thereon connected by a suitable belt 24 with the opposed conical pulley 25 on the stub shaft 26. 27 is a shifter extending aroundthe belt 24 and actuated by the piano action elements in the hopper feeder (not shown) to shift the belt 24 to control the speed of the finishing lapper beater fee-d roller 3.
The stub shaft 26 carries the worm 28 now describe the standard control for throwing the above drive into and out of action.
.A control rod 34 is provided and adapted to be actuated by'means on the finishing lapper so that it will be moved to throw out the dog clutch referred to as well as the clutch 30 when the lap on the finishing lapper is complete, the actuation of the clutch 30 being effected by a transverse rod 35 (Fig. 3).
Thus when the finished lap iscomplete the feed roller 3 and the hopper feeder spiked lattice are stopped.
It has been necessary to describe the above standard drive for feed roller and spiked 1 lattice as myimproved drive is connected thereto and dependent thereon. I will now describe the improvements I have embodied. To the upper end of the stub shaft 26 I have secured a bevel gear 36 which meshes with a bevel gear 37 on a suitably journalled transverse shaft 38, said shaft 38 having thereon the free cotton conveying and con-. densi'ng roller 39, and also having the pulley 40 secured to such shaft at the opposite end to the bevel gear 37 The pulley 40 is connected by the belt 41 with a pulley 42 free on the shaft 5, said pulley 42 being also provided with the female element 43 of a fric tion clutch which has its male member 44 and condensing roller secured on the suitably journalled shaft 417, the feed roller 3, and the conveying and condensing rollers 39 and 46 being situated above the feed lattice conveyor 4:8 and in spaced relation thereto The shaft 17 carries a sprocket wheel 4C9 which is connected to the sprocket wheel 50 on a sleeved extension 51 of the roller 39 by the chain 52, and such shaft 47 also carries the sprocket wheel 53 connected to a sprocket wheel 54 on the feed. roller shaft 33 by means of the chain 55. Thus the rollers 46' and 39 are driven from the feed roller shaft 33..
The provision of such rollers condenses the cotton or cotton waste being fed from the hopper feeder l to the finishing lapper beater 2 and assists in the accurate conveying of such material resulting in the formation of a much more uniform lap than has hitherto been possible. Also the provision of operating the spiked lattice conveyor drive shaft 5 from the shaft 88 permits of a single drive being employed with the result that it enables the hopper feeder and finishing lapper to be driven as a single unit.
' When the clutches 30, 4:3, and M are thrown outthe rollers 39 and 16 are stopped and when thrown in they function in synchronism. Moreover, the variation in the speed of the driven shaft 26 of the evener motion causes a corresponding variation in speed to the rollers 39 and 46, and to the s iked lattice of the hopper feeder. Thus tie cotton or cotton waste fed from the hopper feeder to the finishing lapper is effectively controlled so that any appreciable variation in weight or texture of the material in the finished lap is obviated. Thin spots in the laps are avoided by the use of I this drive and the drive itself is more positive and results in less slipping of the evener belt.
What I claim as my invention is I 1. In an evener motion controlled combined drive between finishing lapper and hopper feeder, the combination with the evener motion driven element, of means driven from the evener motion driven ele ment for condensing the material fed from the hopper feeder to the finishing lapper and assisting in its positive conveyal.
2. In an evener motion controlled combined drive between finishing lapper and hopper feeder, the combination with the evener motion driven element, of means driven from the evener motion'driven element for condensing the material fed from the hopper feeder to the finishing lapper and assisting in its positive conveyal, and means driven from the evener motion driven element for driving the hopper feeder.
3. In an evener motion controlled combined drive between finishing lapper and 'hopper feeder, the combination with the evener motion driven element, of means driven from the evener motion driven element for condensing the material fed from the hopper feeder to the finishing lapper and assisting in its positive conveyal, and means driven from the evenermotion driven ele ment for driving the hopper feeder -the drives of the material condensing and'conveyal assisting means and the means for driving the'hopper feeder being so arranged that corresponding variations in their speeds are effected depending upon the speed of the evener motion driven element.

In an evener motion controlled combined drive between finishing lapper and hopper" feeder, the combination with the evener motion driven element, the feeder hopper lattice drive shaft and the finishing lapper beater'feed roller, of 1 driving gearing between the evener motion driven element and the feed roller, a transverse shaft, means for driving the transverse shaft from the evener motion driven element, releasable means for driving the hopper feedboth condensing rollers from thefeed roller. 7 8. In an .evener motion controlled combined drive between finishing lapper' and hopper feeder, I the combination with the hopper feeder lattice drive shaft and the evener motion driven element,v of atransverse shaft, means for driving the transverse shaft from the evener motion driven element, a friction clutch on the hopper feeder lattioe drive shaft, and means for driving one of the friction clutch elements from the transverse shaft.
9. In an evener motion controlled combined drive between finishing 'lapper and hopper feeder, the combination with the finishing lapper beater feed roller and the evener motion driven'element, of releasable driving gearing between the evener motion driven element and the feed roller, material condensing and conveyal assisting rollers between hopper feeder and the feed roller,
and driving gearing between the feed roller and the material condensing and conveyal asslsting rollers. v
