UNITE-D STATES PATENT OFFICE.

FUEL-INJECTION DEVICE Fon soLIn-oTL nNGINEsL Application filed November 12, 1924, Serial No. 749,376, and in Switzerland `Tanuary 24, 1924. Renewed January The invention relates to a""'fliel injection device for solid oil engines, its object being to'produee adequate and substantially constant fuel injection velocity whatever the amount of the charge and under all engine requirexmuts. This objectv is accomplished by providing in combination with a variable delivery oil pump an accumulator chamber connected thereto and to the engine injection nozzle and having an accumulator plunger whose inward movement is limited )y a relatively fixed abutment, the beginning of the fuel injection being determined by nuwzhauieal means and its end by said abutment, the charge, whatever its` amount, being tlwreby injected at an adequate and substantially constant injection velocity. 'lhis and other advantages of the `invention will appear to those'skilled in the art from the, following specification.
Referring to the drawing, the single figure illustrates diagrammatically in crosssection the preferred embodiment of the invention, a usual variable delivery fuel pump being shown on a smaller scale at the left of the drawing.
ln the form of the device illustrated, 1 is a variable delivery fuel pump which by the pipe 2 delivers to the accumulator chamber 3, in which isilocated the plunger 4 having a wide orfflanged head 5 and forced inward against the relatively fixed abutment 6 by the accumulator spring 7 reacting between. the plunger and the thrust plate 8 adjustable by the set screw 9 inthe top of the accumulator chamber, which set screw is provided with a lock nut 10. The spring is centered by the cylindrical projections 11 and 12 on the plunger and thrust plate respectively. l
Exitof oil from the accumulator chamber 3 and the. beginning o f injection is determined by mechanical control of the yalve 13 seated against t e outlet from said accumu lator by the spr ng 14, reacting against the cap 15.- This valve is opened periodically by a cam lever 16, one of whose armsis elperatively associated with the valve while t other carries a camroller 17, the lever being actuated by the cam 18 on shaft 19 which Ais in phase with the crank shaft of the engine, the arrangement being such that the va ve is'closed by the spring at an time after the plunger has completed its Inward movement. The valve controlled opening by duct 2() delivers the charge `to the engine injection nozzle 21 which, in, the illustrated embodiment, is closed by a fuel-opened valve 22 and seated by a spring 23, thus preventing combustion products from the engine cylinder 24 from being driven. into the duct 20 and leaving deposits of carbon therein.
lVith the' arrangement described it will be apparent that the loaded accumulator ends its delivery stroke always at the same point and that whatever the quantity of the charge it is, when the outlet valve of the accumulator chamber is opened, forcibly ejected therefrom and inject-ed into the engine cylinder at asulticiently highv and substantially constant fuel injection velocity whereby a properly extended distribution and intimate mixture of the injected loil articles with the compressedair inthe cy inder is effected, notwithstandin v the variations in engine requirements an conse uent changes in the amount of fuel delivere at different times.
Iclaim: 1. Means for producing substantially constant fuel injection velocity in solid oil engines comprising in combination a variable delivery oil pump,'an accumulator chamber connected thereto and to the 'engine in -jector nozzle and having an. accumulator plunger, a spring loading said plunger, and
means for controlling communication between said chamber and the injection .nozzle including a valve and timed means for periodically opening it, the` accumulator plunger having an abutment adapted to move inward against a relatively xed abutment before the valve closes, thereby terminating the delivery of the fuel to the en 'ne injectlon nozzle, said nozzle having a el valve to control the delivery of fuel into the v engine cylinder automatically opened by Pressure of the fuel delivered by the accumuator, and closed by spring pressure on cessation of such delivery. 1
2. Means for producing substantially constant fuel injection velocity in solid oil `en gines as set forth in claim l, and in which the valve controlling communication between the accumulator chamber and Athe in-' specfication.
