UNITED .STATES PATENT oFFIcsf Loooia'o'rrvn.
Application filed October 20, 1922. Serial No. 595,757.
This invention relates to improvements in locomotives and particularly to the means whereby steam is taken from theboller and supplied to the engines.
One of the primary objects of my inven' tion is to improve the efficiency and opcration of existing locomotives; and also ,their auxiliaries.A
Another object ot my invention is to make super-heated steam available for the locomotive auxiliariesat all times, irrespective of whether the throttle is open or closed.
A further object of the invention is to provide an emergency control valve to be used, for example, in case of inspection or repair with steam on the boiler or accident to main*` throttle valve which sometimes renders such 'agey as the engine is out of the control ot the: engineman.
Among the more speciiic objects of my invention is the )rovision of an improved arrangement of tirottle box; and throttle box connection to the superheater header,
The foregoing, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear or are incident to my invention, I obtain by means of a construction which I have illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. l is a broken away longitudinal section through a locomotive fire box boiler and smoke box, illustrating the application of my improvements; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section with parts in elevationl taken on the line 3-3 of F ig. l; and Fig. 4 is a similar enlarged section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. l.
Referring now to Fig. 1, theI reference letter A indicates the back head of the locomotive; B is the irebox; C -is the locomotive boiler shell; D is 'the smoke box; and E is the front fine sheet. The reference f letter F denotes the standard type of superheater header provided with two outlets 7 and 8 to which, in ordinary practice, the steam pipes leading to the valve chests are directly connected.
ln accordance with my invention I inter pose a throttle unit G between the supereater header and the steam pipes, such unit consisting ot the throttle box 9 and a double or U-shaped connection 10. The throttle box lies within the smoke box so as to be subjected to the hot gases of combustion and is supported from the shell thereof, in advance/0i' the stack 11, the branches of the double connection passing around the staclrfon either side and being respectively coupled to the outlets 7 and 8 of the superheater header. The throttle box is*` also pro vided with two outlets 12 and 13 to which thesteam .pipes llet and ,15 are respectively connected.` The throttle box, double connection and outlets l2 and 13 are preferably cast integral. The throttle valve 16 is accessible romthe exterior of th-e smoke box by removing the,.cover and the throttle box closure plate 17; and the valve is operated by the operating mechanism 18 extending to the cab, l
The dry pipe 19 may, in general,l be of standard construction, bu't I provide an intake end 20 therefor which is of elbow shape. The intake end of the dry pipe is provided with a valve seat 2l for an emergency control valve 22, the valve rod 23 of which ex* tends through the backvhcad A and has, at
' the rear end thereofthreaded connection with the bonnet 24. Leakage is prevented ,by means of the packing 25. The emergency valve is normally maintained in open position but may be closed, for example, if there is any work to'be done on the superheater unitswith steam on the locomotive or if the throttle valve should get out of order, and the like; or used'as a control valve for operating the locomotive if the throttle should get out of order on the road.
lThe upper end of the intake extends within the steam dome 26 and carries certain parts which cooperate with the dome to constitute a steam separator. rlhe separator parts comprise the bell-shaped flanged member 27, the hood 28, and the inclined baiile member 30. The steam is deflected and caused to take the tortuous path indicated by the arrow and the water is separated out and such as collects in the bell is returned to a suitable point in the boiler, as by the drain pipe 32.
lt will be seen. from the foregoing that eX- such auxiliaries irrespectivel of Whether thel throttle is open or closed and the operation of the auxiliaries is improved and made more ei'licient. f
Other advantages Will occur to those skilled in the art lVhat I claim is:
l. The combination in a locomotivev havinga smoke box and an inside steamsupply line including a 'superheater, of a main normal control throttle in the smoke box on the chest side of the superlieate'r through which all steam to the chests must pass, an outside operatingr connection therefor leading tothe cab, an emergency valve-in the steam line on the dome side of the superheater, and an operating connection for such valve extending Within the boiler-to the cab.
2. In a locomotive having a smoke box, a dry pipe, va superheater, a steam line from the superheater to the chests, a throttle mounted in the smoke box in saidA steam line through which all steam to the chests must pass, a take oil' for an auxiliary between the superheater and the throttle, and a shut-off valve in the dry pipe on the dome side o the superheater.
3'. In a locomotive having a smoke box, a dry pipe, a superheater, a steam line fromv the superheater to the chests, a throttle mounted in the smoke box in said steam line through which all steam to thechests must pass, a take off for an auxiliary-'between the superheater and the throttle7 and a shut-off valve iny the dry pipe on the dome side of the superheater, said take off being located in the smoke-box.
4. The combination in a locomotive having a smoke box, steam chests, steam dome, and an inside steam supply line, of ,a superheater in'said line having aheader, a main normal control throttle 4in the smoke box through which all steam t0 the chests must pass, an outside operating connection therefor leading to the cab, a separate pipe 'connection 'from each end of the superheater header to said throttle, connections from the throttle to the chests, an emergency valve in the steam line located Within the boiler between thesuperheater and the dome, andan operating connection for such valve extending Within the boiler to the cab.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
WILLIAM E. WooDARD.
