COMPRESSOR MECHANISM.
'Application filed September 12, 1924. Serial No. 737,228.
My invention relates to compressor mechanisms. I
an improved compressor mechanism- A 6 further object of my invention is, to provide an improved compressor of theportable type. .Still another object of my invention is ,to provide an improved wheel mounted compressor mechanism capable of travell ng under its own power :to and from its points of utilization and adapted to operate from a traclrway. A still further object of my invention is to .provide an improved wheel mounted compressor mechanism adapted to be propelled directly from the compressor driving motor and having improved controlling mechanism therefor. Stillanother object of ,my invention is to provide an improved portable compressor mechanism wherein the driving motortherefor is adapted to selectivelyd-rivethe compressor'when loaded or to propel'the same relative to a trackway when the compressor is unloaded. A still further object of myinvention is to provide an improved compressor mechanism mounted on a wheeled truckwherein thedriving motor is adapted when desired to simultaneously drive said compressor when loaded and to propel said truck.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes ofillustration one form which my invention mayassume in practice.
In these drawings,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved portable compressor mechanism. 7
Fig.2 is a side elevational view ofFig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front end elevational viewvof Figs. 1 and 2, the view being partially broken away to facilitate illustration.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through my improved controlling mecha- 1 nism, the view being taken substantially. on
line 4.-4 of Fig; 1. i w I In this illustrated form of my invention I have shown .a portable compressor mechanism especially adapted to use in a mine which comprises a truck frame l'having de-.
pendingaxle boxes 2 suitably secured there; to in which axles 3 are journaled. Wheels 4 are suitably-secured to the axles 3 andare adapted to move relative to atrackway, not shown, in a well known manner. A base or supporting frame, 5 is suitably secured to I I j the truck frame 1 by means of intermediate An object of my invention is'to, provide supports or brackets 6 bolted at 7 to the truck frame.
A compressor, generally designated 8,'is su tably secured to the base 5 and comprises a frame 9 which carries a compressing cylin- SULLIVAN I base 5. The motor 12 may be of any suit- I able type but herein is of the electric type. It derives its power from a cable 13 which is adapted to be wound upon a cable reel 14 suitably supported onthe rear end of the truck frame 1, and a cable 15 connected to suitable plug and slip ring connectionslo carriedby the reel from which the cable 15 leads to the mainline switch and reversing mechanism in the control boltv 17. The motor 12 is also provided with a starting. box 18., The armature shaft 19 of the motor has suitably secured thereto a spur pinion 20 which meshes with a large combined internal gear and flywheel secured in any suitable manner to the crank shaft 11. .A
stationary guard 21 covers this'flywheel. The cylinder 10 discharges air under pres surethrough a pipeconnection 22 suitably connected to a receiver 23 secured .to the base 5 by means of a strap connection24. The receiver 23 is provided with aisuit able discharge connection 25. l
A pilot valve, generally designated 26,
. which is herein of thewell known Osborne type, is connected to the receiver 23 by ap pe connection 27 and to inlet valves 28, which may be of any suitable type, of the compressor cylinder 10 through a suitable pipe connection 29. A three-way valve 30 is inserted between the pilot valve 26 and the pipe connection 29, the third of its ports being connectedto pipe 32. Itwill herein be noted :that when a predetermined"pressure has been reached in the'receiver 28 the pilot valve 26 automatically opens, admitting pressure through pipe connection 29 to the inlet valves 28, unseating the same and unloading the compressor in a wellyknown manner. When the-pressure in the receiver 23 drops a certain amount below this .predeQ p v termined pressure, the pilot valve 26 -automatically closes and the pressure unseating the inlet valves 28 is automatically vented to atmosphere, seating the valves and again loading the compressor. If itis desired to manually unload the compressor the lever 31 controlling the three-way valve is manipulatcd and the pressure is bypassed from the receiver through the connection 32 to the pipe 29, unseating the inlet valves 28 and unloading the compressor.
The crank shaft 11 of the compressor 8 is panded to frictionally engage the inner sur.-
face 42 of the member 41 by means of a shipper member 44 and toggle .links 45,
' which shippermember 44 has non-rotatable engagement with a member 46 keyed, as at 47, to a transverse shaft 48 disposed within and coaxial with the sleeve 36. 48 is jour'naled as inbearing sleeves 49 and The shaft 50 carried by the sleeve member 36 and has secured thereto at 51 a sprocket 52 disposed at the opposite end of the shaft from the sprocket 35 and which is connected by means of a chain 53 with a sprocket 54 suitably secured to the rear axle 3 of the truck. A'
chain and sprocket connection 55 connects the front and rear axles 3 in operative driving relation. As illustrated the shipper member 44 is adapted to be actuated by a member56 and a yoke 57 pivoted at 58 on the side of the truck frame 1. The yoke 57 is adapted to be swung about its pivot by means of an operating lever 59 pivoted at 60 on the housing 39 and a connecting rod 61 pivotally connected to the lever and the yoke. i
It will herein be noted that the clutch member 41 is provided at its outer periphery with a cylindrical grooved surface 62 which is adapted to be connected by means of a belt connection 63 with a similar cylindrical surface 64 formed onthe cable reel 14. The tension on the belt 63 is adapted to be adjusted by means of an adjustable idler pulley 65 operated throughlink connections 66 bymeans of a grasping lever 67. The truck frame 1 has a .platform 68 suitably secured thereto at its side on which the operator rides during the movement of the compressor mechanism about the mine.
A suitable friction brake mechanism, generally designated 70, is secured to the rear axle 3 and is adapted to be operated through suitable lever and rod connections 71 and a grasping lever 72 pivoted on the rear end of the truck frame. It is obvious that this brake mechanism may be applied when the compressor is moving relative to a trackwa-y of a steep gradient.
In the operation of my improved portable compressor mechanism it will be observed that the clutch mechanism connecting the truck driving shaft 48 with the crank shaft 11 ofthe compressor is normally thrown out inthe position shown in Fig. 4, the compresso'r 8 drivenfrom the motor12 pumping air under pressure from the cylinder 10 through pipe connections 22 to the receiver 23 in the usual manner; It will also be noted that the pilot valve 26 automatically unloads the compressor cylinder 10 when from the crank shaft 11 of the compressor which is driven by the driving motor 12. Consequently the shaft 48 is rotated, thus rotating the sprocket 52 and the truck Wheels 4 by meansof the chain connection 53, causing thecompressor to be propelled forward- {y relative to the trackway. The switch'in 1e control box 17 may be thrown causing iou the motor 12 to be reversed, consequently reversin the rotation of the sleeve 36 and the truck wheels 4. It-will also herein be noted that the cable reel 14 automatically Winds in the cable at this time. It will further be noted that if desired the compressor may be propelled about the mine with the compressor cylinder loaded, fluid under pressure then being discharged from the cylinder to the receiver as the compressor mechanism moves about the mine to diflere'nt points of use, in such manner as to build up pressure in the receiver by the time thenext. place is reached.
As a result of my invention an improved portable compressor mechanism is provided which is adapted to be propelled directly from the compressor driving motor. It will also be noted that an improved ortable com pressor mechanism is provide having improved controlling means therefor and an improved general arrangement of parts whichis of an exceedingly compact and rugged character especially adapted V to use in a mine.
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my 1nven-.
tion may assume in practice, it Will be unsecure tween said element and said runninggear.
