MORI-RIS P. HOLMES, OF CLAREMONT, VNEW' HAMlSHIRE, ASSIGNOR T0 SULLIVAN MACHINERY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF' MASSACHUSETTS.
MINING APPARATUS.
Application filed June 1, 1920, Serial My invention relates to mining apparatus. It has for its object to provide an improved mining apparatus. A further object of my invention is' to provide improved means for driving a mining machine truck.
A further object of my invention is to provide ani-improved, rugged, and simplified truck driving means, adapted to be driven by a mining machine carried on the truck, and constructed andv arranged in animproved manner enabling the power desired for transport' purposes to be obtained and readily controlled.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my vinvention may assume in practice.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a mining apparatus equipped with my improvement, the machine lbeing shown in transport position on its truck.
Fig. 2 is a larger plan view of the cooperating truck driving mechanismen the machine and truck, certain parts being broken away to facilitate illustration.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In this illustrative construction I have shown a mining apparatus including a truck 1 of low or drop axle construction mounted on wheels 2 and adapted to be propelled over amine track 3, the truck herein carrying a fiexibly fed mining machine 4 adapted to slide on itsr bottom on a mine bottom during cutting and having improved operative connections hereinafter described whereby when said machine is loaded for transport on the truck the truck wheels 2 may be driven from the mining-'machine motor. Herein the mining machine is shown as of the construction described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,544,398, granted June 30, 1925. As in a usual construction, a
pinion 5 on therear'end of the mining machine motor sha-ft 6 also drives a lieXiblefeed operating member 7 adapted to cooperate directly with a flexible feeding member and to draw the latter in and move'th'e machine bodily when desired or swing the bar, the member 7 being -driven through a usual frictionl controlled fast and slow feedingmechanism, herein for'purposes of il` lustration simplified and shown as only comprising a fast feed mechanism including a No. 385,651. Renewed May 21, 1927.
pinion driven gear 8, bevel pinion 9,*bevel gear 10, a friction clutch 11, gears 12, 13, 14 and 15.
In my improved construction, however, the truck driving mechanism is not driven through the friction controlled feeding mechanism, but is instead separately driven directly from the `motor and controlled by another friction, herein a larger clutch carried on the truck. Thus, it will be observed that the truck driving mechanism carried upon the machine is enabled to be powerfully, positively, and simply driven at a proper speed and` to cooperate with this other friction clutch, in such a manner as thereby to avoid all necessity for providing in the machine feed an objectionably large friction clutch of the character required to transmit sufficient power to the truck, or disturbing the feeding mechanism in any way whatsoever.
Herein, it will be noted that the pinion 5 drives the truck driving mechanism through suitable reducing mechanism, herein operatively vconnected to the motor at a point between the initial driving gear of the feeding mechanism and the motor in such manner as to be independent of the feeding mechanism. More particularly, the pinion 5 drives a larger 'gear 16 fixed to a longitudinal shaft 17 j'ournaled at 18 in the motor head 19, and this shaft 17 in turn carries on its rear end a. smaller bevel pinion p 20 meshing with a cooperating shaft mounted bevel pinion 21 of the same size rotatable on a transverse axis in the side of the machine frame and carrying on its outer end a suitable truck driving member, herein a sprocket 22.
This truck driving member is in turn connected by suitable means, herein in the form vof a chain 23, with mechanism on the truck whereof element 29 is toggle operated and connectible with a spider 30 keyed to the shaft 25 and engageable with a collar 31 vtransmission mechanism employed.
ment 29 and disposed coaxially with the latter on the shaft. f This member?) is herein also provided with a rearwardly extending end pivotally connected at 34 to a transversely disposed lever 35, the latter in turn being pivoted at 36 to form a toggle With an 'operating handle 37 pivoted at 38 to the frame.
As shown herein, the shaft 25 is also friction controlled by a suitable brake, 'the shaft herein being provided intermediate its ends with a concentrically `arranged shaft brake 39 controlled by a suitable controlling lever 40. Further, the shaft is connected at one or both of its ends with the truck Wheels, the shaft carrying on its opposite ends sprockets 4l, one 'or both of which, as desired, may be connected through chains l2 with the Wheels 2 on the reai stub axle 43, and through suitable chain and sprocket connections 4A, with the Wheels 2 on the front stub a-Xle. yThus it'Will be noted that-the truck is'driven through the shaft 25 and that through the friction clutch and brake on the shaft, the truck movement may be controlled fas desired.
observed that when the machine is loaded on.
its truck and the chain 28 is connected to the sprocket 22, the rotation of the motor shaft 6 is transmitted through the pinion 5, gear 16, meshing pinions and 2l, to the sprocket 22, which is constantly and positively rotated at a reduced speed due to the Thus, when the chain 23 is connected to the sprocket l211i, the clutch element 28 will be constantly rotated. 1When it is .desired to drive the truck, it is then only necessary to `the clutch .elements 29 into gripping relation Withthe clutch element 28, whereupon `the shaft will be rotated to drive the sprocket 4 1 and 'propelthe truck. Due to the provision of the toggle connections for the koperating handle 37, it will be observed that the tufo clutch elementsmaybe practically positively connected ifdesired at thesame time that the speed may at any time be varied Vthrough a partial manual release of the members 29. vIt `Will also be evident that Athrough the operation of the 'brake 39 .the
truck may be'further 4controlleri whenfdesiied, this biakebeing operable independently of the clutch mechanism to vary the speed of rotation of the shaft 25 When and as desired.
In myimproved construction, it will also be observed that, through the provision of my improved truck driving mechanism on the machine and truck, all necessity for disturbing or re-oi'ganizing the feed mechanism their single or joint Voperations when def sired. Attention is valso directed to the fact that the construction is both exceedingly simple and rugged, and also Well-adapted to be Aapplied to machines of standard construction at relatively small expense.
`-While I have in thisnapplication specilica-lly described one embodiment uf'hiclimy invention may assume in practice, it Will be understood tliatfthis form of same is used for-purpose of illustration and that thc machine may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing lfrom its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
