Another object of my invention in conf nection with the strikeeoff mechanism, is the provision of connections to r ciprocate the strike-ofi1 device only at the time when this device operates upon thetop face of the product of the machine.
Other objects of my invention will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novelty of my invention Will be specifically pointed out herein and in the claims.

rangement of parts shown, but availing myself of all changes and modifications which may be made, and Iwhich fall within the scope of the appended claims, I have shown a machine in which a suitable frame work is provided consisting of vertical members 1, front cross members 2, 3, and 4, rear cross members 5, and 6, and side ci'oss members 7, 8, and 9, the frame work being provided with suitable angularly arranged braces 10, andy upon this frame Work various parts of the machine are mounted.

The main driving shaft 11, mounted in suitable bearingsf12, is carried by the cross `members 7 at the upper part of the machine and is provided with a driving pulley 13 through which, bv any suitable belt from any source of power, the proper speed and sufficient power is deliver-ed to the shaft 11.
In the machine shown, the shaft 11 is provided With four cams 141, above each of which an arm 15 is mounted, each arm being provided with a roller 16 to cooperate with its cam 1li. rThe arms 15 are fulc'rumed as at `17, at the rear of the inachine,.the forward ends of the arms engaging yokes 18 carried by the upper ends of tamping bars 19, "the lower endof each bar carrying a foot 20. i In' the position of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cams 14e do not come in Contact with rollers 16 though while the machine is operating, the cams raise the tamping bars 19 and permit them to dropby gravity, the rollers 16 being brought into contact with the ends ofthe cams by the following mechanism.
A foot pedal 21 is provided and connected by a rod 22 with an arm 23 mounted onthe end or' roclr shaft 24 the latter being provided with a series of fingers 25, one for each tamping bar 19, the upper ends of fin gers 25 engaging hardened blocks-26 carried by the tamping bars. A. connecting rod 27 eilt-ends from the arm 23 yto a Segment y28 on a rock :shaft 29 carried on the upper rear portion of the main frame. A connecting rod 31 extends from the arm 23 tothe lever -32 which `carries the counter-weight 33'. The fingers 25 are loosethe shaft 29 is rocked to Lmove the fulcruin f 17 rearwardly and downwardly to bring the rollers 16 into Contact with the points of the cams 11' which successively pick up the arms 15 and slightly raise the tainping bars 19, releasing lingers whereupon, as the cams 11 travel beyond the rollers 1G, the ramping bars drop to perform the tamping operation.
On the release ot the pedal 21 the counterweight 33 moves the rock shaft to the position shown in Fig. 2 and as the tamliing bars are successively raised. the lingers reengage the blocks` 2G to hold the taping bars elevated.
The material to he operated on by the machine is fed into the hopper 3G, below which a drawer la?? mounted to slide on guides 38, thc latter being mounted on cross members et and t3, the drawer heilig connected by connecting rods 229 with cranks Ll() on the shafts i-1, the latter being driven from shaft 4Q by means of gearing within the housing 4:3.
Referring now to Figs. (3 and 7 it will be seen that shaft 11 carries a gear stel which meshes with a pinion 5 loosely mounted on shaft A disc 4G is .fixed on the shaft 42 and is provided with a number ot open ings -1-7 to receive the clutch piu which is normally pressed toward the disc G by the spring it), the clutch pin 1S being provided with a disengaging linger 50 which is adapted to be operated by the clutch throwout 51 which is carried by the sha'i't 5:2 and operated by the crank arm 525, the latter be ing normally held in a. position to cause the engagement of the throw-out linger 51 with the disengaging linger 5() by means ot a coil spring 5t which is adjustably attached to the guide 3S by means ot an eye-bolt 55.
The disc t6 is provided with a hardened plate 56 and the pinion 45 is held in operative relation to this disc by a ball thrust bearing 57.
Referring now to Figs. l, 2 and 3, the crank arm 55% is provided with an operating rod 5S which extends through the front vertical member of the trame within easy reach of the operator.
To drive the various parts ot the machine the main shaft 11 carries a sprocket 59 which, through the medium of chain 60, drives'a sprocket G1 on shaft (S2, the sprocket 61 being loose on the shaft and being adapted to engage the latter through the dental clutch (32:5 which is provided with a shifter 64- which extends forward to within easy reach ot the operator.

The shaft GS carries sprockets 69, 70, and 71, the sprocket G9 driving the chain 72 which passes rearwardly to the sprocket 73 which is loose on the shaft 74 and at certain times is engaged with this shalt by means ot a dental clutch T).
The sprocket TU drives the chain To which passes over the sprocket 77 on the shaft 12.
'lhe sprocket Tt) is provided 'tor use in driving a stripper or other .suitable molding machine in which the product is formed, though such stripper or mold constituting no part oi my present invention, is not shown.

spring 116 is connected to the end yof the lever 111 and to the rear cross member 6 to normally move the parts to engage the dental clutch with the sprocket 73, the cam 115 being providedto hold the clutch 75 disi engaged during about a half of its revolution.
Any suitable molding machine which, as before stated, is not a part of my present invention and is not shown, is mounted below the tamping bars 19 and in such a relation to the rails 3S, that the upper surface of the mold cavity is flush with the upper surface of the rails 38 and the forward face of the mold cavity is in line with the plate 104 of the drawer 37 when the latter is extended as shown in the drawings` The operation of the machine is as follows, assuming a proper driving connection 'to the pulley 13 and a supply of material in the hopper 36. The operator first engages the clutch 63 by means of the clutch lever 64, this engagement setting the shaft 62 in ro tation and reciprocating the slide '96 and rotating the shaft 88. Theslide 96 forces the material of the hopper into the path of the paddles 90 which delivers this material in substantially equal amounts to both the forward and rear portions of the mold. As soon as the deliveryr of the material .to the mold begins, the operator presses the foot pedal 21 which, through the mechanism and connection before described starts the operation of the tamping bars 19, which operation is continued until the mold has been' filled with the material and the latter prop` erly tamped. The operator now removes his foot from the` pedal 21, disengages the clutch 63, and pushes the rod 58 towards the rear of the machine thereby moving the finger 51 to the position shown in Fig. 7 and permitting the spring 49 to cause the engagement of clutch pin 48 with one of the holes 47 in the disc 46. This starts the shaft 41 and imparts to it one half revolution. The one half revolution of shaft 41 moves the drawer 37 from the position shown in the drawings to a position about in line with the front vertical members of the frame, and as soon as this shaft 41 starts its half revolution the cam 115 moves `out of Contact of roller 112 and permits the spring 116 to cause the engagement of the clutch 75 with the sprocket 73, to rotate the shaft 74 and through its eccentric and the connections extending to the strike-off 84, reciprocate this strike-olf as the drawer 37 travels toward the rear of the machine. This movement of the strike-off accomplishes the linishing of the upper surface of the block which has been tamped and the strike-olf and the plate 104 carries back into the machine and upon the plate 103 any surplus material which had been delivered into the mold. At the end of the half revolution of I the shaft 41 the clutch75 is disengaged to stop the strike-olf v484, and after the blockV has been taken from the mold, and the mold ,it into the mold, whereupon the operator again engages lthe clutch 63 which, as pre viously described causes the delivery of additional material to the mold, and during this delivery the foot pedal 21 is again depressed, tol operate the tamping bars, these processes being repeated for each block made.

By delivering the material in compara- 'l tively small amountsby means of the slide 96, uniformity of texture of the kblock is maintained from the bottom to the top by reason ofthe fact of the tamping process continues during the lling of the mold, the result of this uniformity from front to back as well as top to bottom is a much higher quality of product, and in addition the machine may be operated to produce a greater number of blocks in a given time than machines which have been heretofore built.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a tamping machine the combination of tamping members means for operating the tamping members7 a hopper, means for delivering material from the hopper, and` means for distributing the material to be operated upon by the tamping members dur-` ing the operation of the latter.
