TUBE AND LIKE BENDING MACHINE.

The present invention relates to those tube or like bending machines in which the tube to be bent is placed between the curved periphery of a former wheel and a straight 5 shield and in which a roller membercarried by a radial lever is adapted to travel over the back of the shield to transmit the bendv ing force tlierethrough to the tube and to bend the same around the former. 10. The present invention comprises certain improvements in this type of tube or like bending machine which are more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a side view of the bending machine.

Figure 6 shows a side view of the machine modified to render it portable, and
Figure 7 shows a side view of a further modification provided with gearing to render it suitable for heavy work.
' The apparatus shown in Figures 1 to 5 comprises a bifurcated member 1 having a socket 2 adapted to receive a handle 20 shown broken away, of such a length as Wlll give the required leverage. This member 1 is provided at its bifurcated extremity w1th a spindle 3 which spindle is screwed to a plate 30 by which the apparatus can be bolted r screwed on to a bench. A nut and washer 6 holds thespindle 3 in position. A former 7 is keyed to the spindle 3 between the limbs of the member 1 as shown more particularly in Figure 5. The limbs of the member are slotted at 8 to take a spindle 9 retained by a head 10. On this spindle is pivoted a rocker comprising a pair of parallel plates 12. At one end of the rocker is pivoted a roller 13 and at the other end a following roller 14. These rollers are adapted to engage and travel over the back of a straight shield during the bending movement of the member 1. The shield 15 has an inner grooved surface corresponding to the groove on the periphery of the former. As the spindles to the rollers 13, 14 are respectively radialon each side of the line adjoining the spindles 3 and 9 these rollers can swing towards or away from the fixed former 7 The grooved inner face of the shield is of a length comprising such a length of that portion of the tube to be bent to spread the bending pressure to such an extent as to avoid damage to the tube and has a. lip top and bottom to fit over the edge of the former 7 to prevent distortion of the section of the material, during the bending operat1ons. A square sided member 16 is pivotally mounted on a stud screwed into the plate 30 carrying the spindle 3 supporting the fixed former. The faces of the member 16 are shaped to correspond to the diameters or contours of the pipes or angle irons to be placed in the bending machine. The rocker is adjusted by the screw 19.0f the member 1. The screw 19 may be rotated directly by hand, but for convenience the screw does not rotate, and the nut is rotated by a bevel gear which can be rotated by a tommy bar 22 or the like. In order toallow of the necessary variations in the relation of the parts between the members, there is a loose connection between the under end of the adjusting screw 19 and the said rocker carrying the bending rollers 13, 1 1.
In use the tube or the like is passed into the machine so as to bear against the periphery of the former and to be covered by the grooved face of the shield. The lever memher 1 is turned on its pivot 3 thereby bringing the rollers 13, 14, to a position in which their pressure in equalized on the back of the shield 15 and thus bending the tube or other member as shown in Figure 4,
In the modified form shown in Figure 6 the plate 30 is replaced by a pair of side plates 23 with footings 24 and 25. This modification is portable and in use stands vertically on the ground. The operator stands on the footings 24 and pulling up-.

What I claim is 1. A tube or the like bending machine comprising in combination a support, a spindle'mounted on said support,a bending lever dle mounted on'said support, a bifurcated bending lever mounted on said spindle, a curved former keyed to said spindle between the arms of said bifurcated lever, a straight shield adapted to rest on the periphery of said former, a rocker pivotally mounted be tween the arms of said lever and a pair of rollers carried by said rocker adapted to travel over the back of the shield to transmit the bending force therethrough to the tube or the like between said shield and vformer to bend the same around said former.
3. A tube or the vlike bending machine comprising in combination a support, a spindle mounted on said support, a bifurcated bending lever having arms provided with opposite longitudinal slots mounted on said spindle, acurved former keyed to said spindle between the arms of said bifurcated lever, a straight shield adapted to rest on the periphery of said former, a pivot slidably'mounted in the opposite longitudinal slots in the arms of said lever, a rocker mounted on said pivot between the arms of said lever, means for adjusting the position of said rocker and its pivot in said slots, and a ,pair of rollers carried by said rocker adapted to travel over the back of the shield to transmit the bending force therethrou h to the tube or the like between said shie d and former to bend the same around said former.
4. A tube or the like bending machine comprising in combination'abed plate, a spindle mounted on said bed plate, a bifurcated bending lever having arms provided with opposite longitudinal slots mounted on said spindle, a curved former keyed to said spindle between the arms of said bifurcated lever, a straight shield adapted to rest on the periphery of said former, a pivot slidably mounted in the oppositelongitudinal slots in the arms of sad lever, a rocker mounted on said ivot between the arms of said lever, an a justing screw adapted to he turned to adjust the position of said rocker and its pivot in said slots in the arms of said lever and a pair of rollers carried by said rocker adapted to travel over the back of the shield totransmit the bending force therethrough to the tube or the like between said shield and former to bend the same around said former.
