DRAFT RIGGINGFOR CONCRETERAILWAY CARS.
Original application filed October 31,1918, Serial 110,260,434. Divided and this application :tiled August 9, 1919.
The object of the presentinvention is to provide an improved drait'gear for railway cars.
The present application is 'a division of an application filed by me on Oct. 31,1918, Serial No. 260,434.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a horizontal section through'an end oit a car, showing in detail my improved draft rigging; Figure2 isa view similar to Figure 1 on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, 41 indicates the tloor of a concrete railway car. `In a recess 43 extending at the end of. the car, are contained three longitudinally extending horizontal helical springs 44, (Fig. 1.). In the center of each spring extends an eyeebolt 46, the eye of said bolt surrounding a ver tically extending bolt 47 surrounded by upper and lower pipes 48 embedded or `secured in the outward extension 49 'of the adjacent bolster 6 or directly to bolster 6, the lower ends of said kbolts having cotter pins 51, therethrough, the heads of said boltspreventing them from falling down.
The inner ends of said springs press against a vertical member or follower 52 of an angular plate 53 (Fig. 2), which member either in turn presses against a sheet 54 of shockabsorbing material, which in turn is pressed against the outer surface at vthe inner end of said recess. The outer ends of said springs 44 press against the inner surface of an outer member or follower, which is held by nuts 57 on the outer ends of said eye-bolts 46, which latter extend through holes 58 in said rocker. The central por tion ot' the outer side of said rocker is curved convexly and bears against avertically ex-` tending portion ot the U-jshaped bridle plate 59 forming a part ot the coupler 66. This plate is connected by bolts 61 and nuts 62 to said angular plate 53, the heads of said bolts 61 being curved convexly on the surfaces adjacent to said plate 53 to rock thereon, the sheet 54 having holes 63 to re-A ceive said heads. The bridle plate 59 is iixedly connected by vertical bolts 64 to the inner end of the coupler 66. The coupler extends through a comparatively narrow opening 67 in the :front end of the body et the car. A transversely extending retaining plate 68 is secured to the horizontal member of the angular plate 53. Side chafing plates 71 receive the impact of the ends Serial No. "$16,483.

I claim 1. In combination with a railway car body, a. longitudinally extending device the inner ends of which are secured to said body, an outer member slidable upon said device and limited in its outward movement thereby, coiled `springs pressing said outer member outwardly, an inner member pressed inwardly by said springs, shock absorbing material between said inner member and the car body, a'coupler,l and devices for connecting the coupler with the inner member.
2. In combination with 'a railway 'car body, bolts, fixedlysecured to said car body, inner and outer members through which said bolts extend, said outer member being 'formed with "a convex outer surface, a coupler bearing against said convex surface, springs between said inner and outer members, said bolts limiting the outward movement of the 4outer member, a tension 'device connecting 'said coupler with said inner member, andsaid springs and tension device limiting the movement of the coupler.
3. In combination with a car` body, a spring, albolt secured at one end to said car body, lan inner plate through which the bolt extends and against Vwhich said spring presses, a rocker through which the bolt extends and `against the inner surface of which said spring presses, means for limiting outward movement ot said rocker, a bridle plate on which said rocker bears, meansfor connecting said bridle and inner plates, a coupler, and means for connecting said coupler with the bridle plate.
4. In combination with a, car body, springs, bolts extending through the springs, means for securing the inner ends of thel bolts to said body, an inner plate against which said springs press, a rocker against the inner surface of which said springs press, Vthe outer side of said rocker being curved, means on the outer ends of said bolts which retain said rocker against forward movement, coupler, a bridle plate attached to said coupler,l and engaging the curved surfaces of said rocker -and bolts connecting the inner plate to said bridle plate.
5. In combination with a car body, springs, an inner plate against which the inner ends of said springs ress, a rocker against the inner surface o which -the outer ends of said spring press, bolts anchored to said body and means for supporting the outer ends of said bolts upon said rocker, a bridle plate, said rocker having outer side curved which allows a radial movement ot a couplei,`bolts connecting said bridle plate yand inner plate with. one another, a coupler andmeans for connecting said coupler with the bridle plate.
6. In combination with a railway car body, longitudinally extending members the inner ends of which are secured to said car body, an outer member slidable on said members, springs pressing said outer member outiwardly, an inner., member supported by Asaid longitudinally extending members and pressed inwardly by said springs, a coupler, devices for connecting the` coupler with the inner member permitting inward movement of the coupler relative thereto, a member supported transversely by saidcar body and extending under and slidably supporting Saidouter member and an extension carried by said inner member and having sliding engagement with said transversely extendin member.

In combination with a car body, longitudinally extending devices, the inner ends of which are pivotally secured to said body and an outer member slidable uponsaid devicesand limited in its Aoutward movement thereby, springs pressing said outer member outwardly, and an inner member pressed inwardly by said springs, a coupler and devicespfor yconnecting the coupler with the inner member. i

9. In combination with a car body, a longitudinally extendinlr device, the inner ends ot which are pivotal y secured to said body, an outer member slidable upon said Adevice and limited in its outward movement thereby, springs pressing said outer member outwardly, an angular inner member pressed inwardly by said springs, a coupler, said outer member having curved surfaces for the radial movement of said coupler, and devices for connecting the coupler with the inner member.
10. In combination with a car body, springs, bolts extending through the springs, means for pivotally securing the inner ends of thebolts to said body, an angular inner member against which said springs press, which in turn presses against the car body, a rocker against the inner surface of which said springs press, means on the ends of said bolts for limiting the outward movement of said rocker, said rocker having an outer curved surface, a bridle plate engaging said curved surface to allow a radial movement of said bridle plate, bolts passing on the on(- side of said springs connecting said bridle plate andinner member, means by which the last named bolts can have lateral movement in respect to said inner member, a coupler, a means for ixedly connecting said coupler with the bridle plate.
11. In combination with a car body, springs, bolts extending through tl ie springs, means for securing the inner ends ol` the bolts to said body, an inner plate against which said springs press, which in turn presses against the car body, a rocker against the inner surface of which said springs press, means for supporting the outer ends of said bolts upon `said rocker, said rocker having an outer curved surface, a bridle plate engaging said curved surface, bolts passing on the outside .of said springs connecting said bridle and inner plates, means by which the bolts can have lateral movement in respect to said inner plate, a coupler and means for connecting said coupler with the bridle plate.
