PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS R. IQCREEBY, OF WEST PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY RAZOR Application flied April 14, 1825. Serial No. 23,014.
This invention relates to improvements in safety razors, one object of the inventionbeing to so construct the uard member that, by cooperation with the ase or clamping member, angular adjustments of the cuttin edges of the blade may be enhanced, am? so that adjustabilit o the razor effectively to perform its unctions under various conditions may be easily and accurately accomplished to obtain the best results in shaving.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings,-'
Figure 1 is a plan view of a safety razor embodying my lmprovements.
Figure 2 is a view in section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view in section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a separate view of the guard,
and
Figures 5 and 6 are views showing modifications. i
In the drawings, the base or clampm member isrepresented at 1 and made Wlbl a concave upper face. The base member 1s provided with upstanding studs or posts 2 between its center and respective ends to pass through suitable holes in the blade 3. A threaded shank 4 projects from the central portion of the base 1 and enters a suitably threaded socket in the lower portion of a handle member -5. Between the blade 3 and the lower end of the handle member, my improved guard is disposed, the lower end of the handle forming a shoulder 6 to engage the guard and clamp the blade between the same and the base 1, it being understood of course that the blade and guard are provided with central openings for the passage of the threaded shank 4, and it will also be understood that the transverse diameter of the blade is somewhat greater than that of the base 1 and somewhat less than that of the guard.
My improved guard 7 comprises two members 8-9, each formed at its outer ed .to provide a comb or guard fingers 10. e
members 8-9 comprisin the guard 7 are hinged together at their inner edges so that the hinged connection between the guard members shall be substantially coincident with the longitudinal axis'of the guard, and
the respective guard members are provided on their inner edges with recesses which cooperate to form openings 11 for the accommodation of the guide studs 2 and an opening 12 for the accommodation of the threaded shank 4. While the hinge portions between the members 8-9 ma be constructed in any suitable manner an so as to be either flush with the upper surface of the guard or to project below the lower surface thereof, still I find it convenient to form said hinge connections on the upper surface of the guard. Thus in the drawings, the guard member 8 is provided with a series of lugs 13 having eyes 14 to enterbetween pairs of eyes 15 projecting from lugs 16 on the guard member 9,-su1table hinge ins being assed through the several sets 0 intermes ing eyes.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figures 1 to 4, the underface of the guard 7 is made convex but if desired this under face of the guard may be made concave as shown in Figure 5 or portions of the guard members may be made fiat on their under faces as shown in Fi re 6.
By turning the ban le member, the guard will be caused to exert pressure against the thin blade and so bend the latter as to change or adjust the angularity of its cutting edges and at the same time the guard members will turn on their hinge connection with each other so that the comb portions of the guard members will be caused to move in a direction away from the cutting edge portions of the blade, thus renderin the cutting portions of the blade more avai able for effective service.
In order that the difierent adjustments of the angularity of the cutting edges of the blade may be accurately ascertained, I provide on the companion members of the guard at the center of the same, a circular scale of figures as indicated at 17 and a mark 18 is provided on the handle member to register with any figure on the scale desired.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a safet razor,.the combination of a base memberaving a concave inner surface, a threaded stud extending from the inner concave surface of the base member, a handle en agedon the stud, and a uard interwhereby to clamp a razor blade to the base, the entire face of the blade to clamp the the guard consisting of two similar members blade to the base member and willvary the 10 hinged together for free relative movement angular relation between the edges of the along their inner edges with said ed es exblade and the outer edges of the guard.
" tending across and in direct cont-act with the In testimony whereof, I have signed this end of the handle whereby the pressure exspecification. erted through the handle will be applied to bothmembers of the guard and thence over THOMAS R. MCCREERY.
