'l'his invention relates to a machine for use in tufting cushions by .setting tufting mem* bers of the rivet type therein7 and also to a method for performing a tufting operation.
The invention includes a vertically movable anvil member arranged to be lifted into engagement with the underside of a cushion and to be loclred in raised position to provide an anvil surfer with which rivet setting mechanism is arranged tov cooperate in setting a tu'fting member in place in the cushion.
Another feature 'of the invention resides in the provision of means automatically operable following the operation of the rivet setting mechanism for unlocking ythe anvil member to permit the anvil member to dcscend to a. lowered position to provide for changing the position of the work.
T he anvil elevating means and thc rivet setting mechanism are preferably arranged to be operated through the manipulation of a pair of foot treadles mounted adjacent each other for separate and successive operation to raise the anvil member to operative position and then to actuate the rivet setting mechanism. l

Y `Referring to the drawings for a more de-` tailed description of the invention, in Figure 1 there is shown a tufting machine embodying the invention and including a base member l0 from which a vertical standard or frame member 11 projects upwardly to support a head member-.12 on which rivet feeding mechanism 13 and rivet setting meehanism 11i are carried.
Projecting forwardly from the upper extremity of the standard 1l is a table or shelf member 15 on which the work may be received as a preliminary to the carryingout of a tufting operation thereon. The
.shelf 15 is supported on bracket members 16 which are bolted directly tothe standard 11 and the base portion of the head member CAD ting` and forming` head member 23 against Which the tutting rivet is forced for an upsetting operation thereon.
The vertically movable anvil member 22 is koperated through an arm 23 which passes through a slot formed for the purpose in the rear ivall of the guide member 18 and pivotally engages at 253'; with the anvil member 22 passing into slot 25 formed inthe anvil member 22 for the purpose. The other end of the arm 23 is pivotcd at 26 to a lever 27 equipped with a toot treadle 28 at its outer extremity and pivoted at a mid point 29 to the toi-'warn standard or frame piece 20.
