Description

Feb. 28, 1928I l,660,470 W. A. BEAUCHAMP E1- AL sEcuRING MEANS Filed Dec. 1;., .925 0 +3 Hg) EY WwmM/@ay n neath the gui cured against the outer face of the side 1 of* the car .and is provided with the bed portiony 14, which in the illustrated embodiment of the present invention provides tour holes for the reception of rivets or bolts, or other preferred holdingmeans. In the construction shown inV Figures 1 and 2, bolts 15 are provided having round heads presented exteriorly ot the car, whereby to prevent tanipering by thieves. In the-structure shown inY` Figure 3, rivets 15 are-provided for holding the keeper member 9 inixed `position upon the exterior tace of the side member 1 of the car. The keeper lug 11 is slotted for the reception of the bolt 10, and the bed portion 14 of the keeoer' member 9 is cut away bee lug 11 in order to permit the insertion -andfwithdrawal of the bolt before the keeper member 9 is attached in position on the side of the car; The lower wall 15 of saidV cut away portion provides a seat forthe lower extremity of the bolt 10 under certain conditions to be referred to hereinafter.
Referring particularly to Figures 4 and 5, it will be noted thatvthe bolt member 10 comprises an elongated member having a hook portion 16 at one end. The rear of the bolt 10 is provided witha rearwardly extending portion 17 which in service is adapted to abut against the car side 1 andprevent the removal oft the bolt 10 from `the guide lug 11.
Said rearwardly extending portion 17 pret erably takes the form of a fiat web disposed in the plane of the hook portion 16, being of the same thickness as the shank of the bolt 10Q This enlarged portion prevents prying of the bolt in a direction transverse to `the car side.A The lower extremity of the bolt 10 is provided with the portion 18, thick` enefd laterally of the bolt 10. Said laterally thickened portion 18 eifectually prevents the bolt t 10 from being` withdrawn upwardly through the guide ug ,11, theaperture in said guide lug 11 being `of only suiiicient width to "permit the free assage of the narrower portions of the bo t 10. The keeper lug 12`is recessed, as indicatedby t-he numeral 19 in Figure 2,` to permit the passage.
of the enlarged portion 18 of the bolt 10,
.but `is provided with the y shoulders 19--19 adapted to abutagainstthe side of the bolt 10 to preventswinging movement of'said bolt 10 in'a plane parallel to the'side of the car. The thickened portion 18ct the bolt 10 a`nd the sealing lug 13 are provided with slots 20 adapted to receive a sealing ribbon.`
' Progressive positions assumed by the bolt 10 whilesaid bolt is beinginserted within yof the car.
the guide lug 11 are indicated by the numerals 21, 22, 23 and 24 in Figurefl, it being assumed, of course, that the keeper member is `free from the side of thecary The hook portion 1G of the bolt 10 is inserted within the guide lug 11 in the manner indicated by the numerals21 and 22. Said bolt `10 is then raised relative to the guide lug'11 to .a position approximating `that indicated by the numeral 23 oit Figure 4, after which said bolt 10`is allowed to drop to the position indicated by the numeral 2a ot Figure f1. rlhefkei-per member 9 with the bolt 10 mounted therein may be readily mounted upon the side ot a car and secured thereto by means of thebolts 15 or the rivets 15.
lVhen thekeeper member 9 Ais located in posit-ion on the sideof the car, it will be impossible to withdraw the bolt 1()` from the keeper member 9 by reversing the movel `V ments described above for inserting said bolt 1() in position. Such a reversal in movement will be prevented by reason of the l engavement ot the rearwardly extending portion 2370i: the bolt 1Q with the side oi" the car. Removal of the bolt vertically from the keeper member 9 willalso be `prevented by reason ot engagement of the thickened portion 18 with the guide lug '11. Y
In service, Vwhen it is desired to hold the bolt 10`upvoutot cooperative relationship Y with the hasp member 8 and the keeper lug 12, said bolt will be disposed with the lower Y extremity thereof resting upon thewall 15 defining the cut away portion in rear of the guide lug 11. At this time the bolt 10 will assume the lines in Figure The hasp 8, assuming the door 2 to be in i closedposition, may be moved into coopera tive relationship `with the keeper lug 12 after which the bolt 10 may be allowed to drop to the position'shown in i'ull lines in lFigure 3, that isf-to aposition within the keeper lug 12 and in abutting relationship with the hasp member 8. As indicated above, the contour of the keeper lug 12 is such as to prevent swinging movement ot the bolt 10 in a plane parallel wit-hthe side A sealing'ribboninay be insertedthroughthe cooperating slots 20 oi' the sealing lug 13 and the thickened portion 18 of the bolt 10. i
guide lug 11, the keeper lug 1,2, and the sealing lug 13. By reason of these three abuti position indicated in dotted ice ments a very etlicientsealing effectis had.`
By reason of the fact that the bolt 1O is` held by thelugs 11 and V12 against movement in a plane parallelwith the side of the car, the sealing ribbon may be insertedthrough the slot20 of the bolt 19and through` the cooperating aperture of the sealing lug 13,
`vLoring/riff) producing a lock which 'will 'eifectualily therewith.
The present invention is made up of sim-l ple parts which are simple 'to manufacture and which may be made very sturdy. HThe assembly of said parts is very simple, and when once assembled upon the side of a car there -is nothing to come -loose and nothing to become lost. The bolt-10 may be disposed out of the way of the keeper lug 12 when not in use, thereby simplifying the mattei' of closing and securing the door 2.
Though the preferred embodiment of the present invention has been describedV in detail, it will be clear that many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended to cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
