FORM LOCKING AND Application filed February The presentinvention relates to .sole pressing machines and is herein illustrated as embodied in a so-called direct pressure leveling machine of the type disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 881,4:78, granted March 10,1908, on application of Benjamin F. Mayo. I p I Machines of this type are used for the purpose of leveling the sole of a shoe, that is, imparting to it the desired surface contour after previous shoemaking operations (such, for example, as the outsole stitching operation) have bent and otherwise disfigured the surface of the sole. In. operation, the shoe is placed upon a so-called last? which is an iron last-shaped shoe-support or jack located generally below a form which has a surface contour substantially the same as that which it is desired to impart to the sole of the shoe, and after bringing the shoe and form into proper registry, relative movement between the form and shoe is effected to cause the sole to be pressed between the form and the last, suflicient pressure being exerted to causethe sole to be smoothed out and to conform closely to the surface contour of the form. g
It is the custom, for the sake of economy in operation, to use thesame form for levelingthe soles of shoes of a number of. neighboring sizes. The surface of the form is made considerably larger than the sole of the largest shoe it is to treat, so that proper'contact will be obtained under all conditions, but it is necessarythat the ball line of the form correspond accurately to the ball line of each shoe treated and this requires that the machine provide for adjustment of the form longitudinally inorder to bring the ball lines of shoes of different sizes into proper registration with the ball line of the form. For this purpose, in a well-known commer cial embodiment of the type of machine illustrated in the above-mentioned Letters Patent, the form is secured adjustablyto a form carrier which is locked in a fixed position on a form holder in the machine, and in order to effect the adjustment it is neces sary to remove the form and its carrier from the form holder. possible in present commercial equipment. The invention has in viewthe provision of means including a form carrier of a different type from that heretofore in general use for securing the form on the form holder and for adjustingit without v removing it plied with one orrnore of such units be enabled to use them as well as units .ofthe new type. The invention accordingly pro vides a construction such that form carriers of different types may beinterchangeably secured to the form holder. In the concommercial practice to supply forms and struction shown the means for securing tothe holder the earlier type of form carrier is left unchanged, and there is provided a device which maybe readily attached to the holder for locking to the holder a for1ncarrier equipped withmore convenient means for adjusting the, form. -As herein illustrated such-adjusting .means comprises a screw on the carrier which abuts against the holder for adjusting'the form and the carrier as a unit relatively to the holder, and
the locking means comprises amembermow able into or out of abutting engagement with I the head of the screw. The form which engages the surface of the sole is indicated at 16. For purposes ofthis invention a form carrier 18 (Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 1), 1n the shape of a strap dove-tailed .111 cross-section, is rigidly secured to the form by means of screws 20 and is adapted to be received in a supporting guideway formed by correspondingly clove-tailed plates 22 secured upon the lower surface of the holder 8. i
Adjustment of the 1 form longitudinally to bring it into registration withlthe ball lines of shoes of different sizes is effected, as herein disclosed, by sliding the form 16, and its attached carrier 18 along the plates 22, relatively to the form holder 8. To this end the forward extremity of the carrier 18 is 1 bent upwardly at 24 to receive, in threaded engagement, a screw 26 and a lock nut, as shown.
The extremity of the screw 26 bears against the forward part of the holder8 and serves as an adjustable stop for the form to resist any tendency of theform, during the sole leveling operation,to move rearwardly, To resist anyforward thrust of the form during the-sole leveling operation a cylindrical projection or boss 28, (which will be further described below), located at the forward'extremity of the form holder 8, is provided with a metal collar 30,
detachably secured thereon by means of a set-screw 32.; Pivotedat the front of the collar 30 is a hooked arm 84, the extremity of which fits over the head of the screw 26 and acts as an abutment or locking device againstwhich the head of the screw 26 presses when any forward thrust is imparted t the form 16. Obviously, the screw 26 Will always fit between the members 8 and 3 1 irrespective of the adjustment of the member 24. j r
The form-adjusting means in use just h ws a form carrier of the tyr prior to the present invention is shown generally in United States Letters Patent No. 930,823, issued Aug; 10, 1909, on the application of E. E. lVinkley. In this c0nstruct-ion' the dove-tailed form carrier 18 was bent downwardly at its rear end, as shown. in Fig. 5, and a setscrew 141 was provided in the down-turned portion to brace the form against any tendency to move backwards in operation and to assist in its adjustment, as will be. seen. The form itself was fastened to the strap or carrier by screws such as the illustrated screws 20 passing through slots 42 in the strap. and adjustment was secured by loosen ing the screws and sliding the form relatively to the strap. As stated above, such adjustment of the form required'its removal from operative position in order to be able to get at the screws20. The strapwas locked f relatively to the holder by a pin 38 (such as shown in Fig. 2), which slid up and down in a bored hole 36 in the cylindrical boss 28above mentioned andentereda hole 40 in the form carrying strap 18.
Itqvill be evident that when a machine is equipped with mechanism such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 there may be utilized therein'either a form to which 1s attached a form carrler such asshown at '18 in Fig. lor a form having thereona form carrier such as shown at 18 in Fig. 5. hen theform is provided with the carrier 18, it ismounted in the machine inthe manner illustrated in Fig. 2, the locking pin 88 being raised and Hill resting 'idly upon the carrier. The form may then be readily adjusted while in position 1n the machine simply by turnmg the screw 26 while maintaining the inner end of the screw in engagement with the form holder 8, the lockingmember 34 being raised to afford access to the head of thepscrew. After the proper adjustment has been effected, the member 3 1 is returned to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 2, thereby serving as an abutment for locking the form against movement toward the left while the screw in engagement with the holder prevents it from moving toward the right relatively to the holder 8. On the other hand, if a manufacturer should already have any forms equipped with carriers of the earlier type such as shown at 18 in Fig.7 5, he may readily use them by;
mountingthem in the machine in the same manner as illustrated in Letters Patent No. 930,823. Injthat case the pin 38 will be pushed into the 'opening40 in the form carrier to lock the carrier in position, while the member 30 and its. arm '34: remain idly in position on the form holder. further evident that in order to utilize'the advantages of the invention there is no necessity for alter ng the structure of a machine heretofore in use, but merely to Itwill be add to the old machine the locking attachment 3O, 34: to co-operate with forms having thereon carriers such as shown at 18 in Fig. 4.
Having thus described the invention,
what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a sole leveling machine, a form holder adapted to support either of two kinds of form carriers, and a plurality of locking devices carried by the form holder, one of said locking devices being designed to co-operate with a form carrier of one type, and the other of said locking devices being adapted to co-operate with a form carrier of the other type. y
2. In a sole leveling machine, a form holder adapted to support. either of two kinds of form carriers, and a plurality of locking devices carried by the form holder,
, one of said locking devices being designed to co-operate wlth a form carrier of one holder, a boss on the holder arranged to carry a pin for locking a form carrier to the holder, and a device detachably mounted on the boss and comprising a member pivoted to swing over the end of a difi'erent form carrier to lock it'in position on the holder. p
5. In a machine of the class described, a form holder, a device on said form holder constructed to co-operate with one type of 7 form carrier to secure a form in position on the holder, and another device on said formv holder constructed to co-operate with a different type of form carrierprovided with a screw for adjusting the carrier and form as a unit relatively to the holder, said other device comprising a member movable into or out of locking engagement with the head of the screw. r
6. Ina machine of the class described, a
form holder, a locking. device on said fornr holder comprising a pm arranged to center a recessin one type of form carrier to secure a form in position on the holder, and another device detachably mounted on said form holder and constructed to co-operate with a different type of form carrier provided'with a screw arranged to abutagainst the holder 'for adjusting the carrier and'the form relatively to the holder, said other device comprising a member mounted for swinging movement into or out of abutting engagement with the head of the screw for locking the carrier to the holder.
