COOLING SYSTEMYFOR BEFRIGERATIG APPARATUS.
Application led Novgmber 18, 1928. nSerial No. 675,638.
This invention relates to refrigerating apparatus and refers more particularly to means for cooling the compressor and radiator thereof to facilitate the cooling and oondensing of the compressed refrigerating medium. f p
An object of the invention is to provide a compact and efficient apparatus in which a device for compressing a refrigerating medium is preferably located between a radi- .vator for receiving 'the compressed medium, A and a fan for drawing air through the radiator to cool the same and the compressor. Another object is to provide an apparatus in which. the radiator, rcom ressor and fan are preferably arranged in a ignment with a motor upon a suitable support and are preferably enclosed by a li ht and durable hood that co-o crates with t e support to-forml a passage or directing the air drawn through the radiator against the compressor.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel fea- 'turesoof construction, combination andarlport on which the refrigerating apparatus is` mounted. l
Referring now to the drawing in which like charactersof reference designate corresponding parts throughout. the several views, the numeral 1 designates a stand having a flat top 2 upon which I preferably mount a pump 3'for com reslsing a refrigerating medium, a motor 4 aving a shaft 5 for drlving the pump, and a radiator 6 havingv a series of coils 7 through which the compressed medium passes tor be cooled and condensed before entering the usual brine tank (not shown) of a refrigerator. The coils 7 of the radiator are preferably arranged in superposed relation within a frame 8 and are preferably spaced apart as shown so that air froml the atmos'llere mayl circulate fag; therebetween. e uppermost coil 9 is p erably connected by a suitable tube 10 to the exhaust conduit 11 of the pump while the lowermost coil 12 is preferablyy connected to a tube 13 that leads to the usual float chamber (not shown) on to of the brine tank.
To facilitate the cooling and condensing of the compressed medium passing through the coils 7 of the radiator, I preferably provide a suitable fan 14 that is mounted on the motor drive shaft-5 to be driven thereby for drawing air through the radiator to cool the same and the pump. For directing the air drawn through the radiator by the fan against the compressor, the radiator 6, puxnp 3 and fan 111 are preferably arranged in alignment on the stand 1 and are enclosed by a hood 15 that fits the radiator casing 8 and that cooperates with the top 2 of the stand to form a passage from .the radiator to a. point sllghtly beyond the fan. The hood 15- may be constructed of any light and durable material such as sheet metal and is preferably provided at its lower edges with laterally extending flanges 16 that are detachably secured to the top 2 of the' stand.
In order that the hood will fit the radiator casin 8 snugly, I preferably provide outward y project-in top and side flanges 17 and 18 respective y at one end of the hood :isl
coV
for embracing the radiator casing 8. The
As shown in Figure 2, thev hood is prefer' ably provided withy a substantiallyV-shaped portion 22 at the top that inclines gradually downwardly from the flange 17 to the rear end of the hood, while upon opposite sides of the V-shaped portion" 22 are transversely curved substantially triangular shapedpor-V tions 23 that connect into the rearwardly converging sides 24 of the hood.
From the foregoing descri tion it will bev I 'apparent that I have provide a single means for cooling effectively both 'the radiator and the compressor. tion of'the'refrigerating me ium is assured before it reaches the usual brine tank in a Thus, com lete condensa-v refrigerator. In addition to cooperating I withlthe top 2 of the standard to form a passage for directing the air drawn through the radiator toward the compressor the hood 15 also serves as an efficient guard for the fan 14.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I Vdesire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a refrigerating apparatus, the com vbination with a pump for compressing a refrigerating medium, a radiator for` condensing the compressed medium, a= motor for driving said pump,` and a fan operatively connected to said motor, of a removable .housing 'enclosing said pump and fan prolvided with an opening at one end thereof `of an area corresponding to the area'of the radiator'and having a substantial arcuateshaped opening at the opposite end thereof of substantially the same area as said fan and motor.
2. In a refrigerating apparatus, the combination with a pump, a radiator, and a motor, of a common portable support thereyfor, av relatively short driving shaft between said pump andmotor, a fan on said 'shaft for effecting 1a circulation of' air through the radiator and around the pump, and a removable inverted trough-shaped hood covering said radiator, pump and fan and having openings at the o posite ends thereof, the opening at the orward end thereof receiving said radiator and substantlally corresponding in shape and area to the vertical rear face of said radiator, the
opening at Athe rear end of said hood substantially corresponding in shape and area to the vertical cross sectional area of said motor, the upper wall of said hood extendingdownwardly and vrearwardly from the v opening at the forward end of said hood 'to a point adjacent to the opening at the rear end thereof and the side walls of said hood converging from the opening at the forward end thereof to a point adjacent to the openand inwardly toward said vfor compressing a refrigerant, an air cooledf radiator adjacent said pump and 1n which the compessed refrigerant is adapted to be condensed, a motor adjacent said pump for driving the same, a relatively short drive shaft extending between said motor and pump whereby said pump is driven directly by said motor, and a hood extending over said radiator and pump, the forward end of said hood having an opening for receiving said radiator and substantially corresponding in shape to the vertical rear face of said radiator and the rear end iof said hood having an opening substantially corresponding in shape and area to the vertical cross sectional area of said motor, said openings being in substantial alignment whereby air entering the hood from the radiator will flow against and around the pump and will flow against and around said motor.
4. In a refrigerating apparatus, a.y pump for compressing a refrigerant, an air cooled radiator adjacent said pump and in which the compressed refrigerant is adapted to be "condensed, a motor adjacent to said pump for driving the same, a relatively short drive shaft extending between said motor and 4pump whereby said pump is driven directator pump and fan whereby air will be drawn by said fan through said radiator and around said pump toward said motor, the opening at the forward end of said hood receiving said radiator and substantially corresponding in shape to the vertical rear face thereof, and the opening at the rear end of said hood being smaller than the opening aforesaid and substantially corresponding in shape and area to the vertical cross sectional area of said motor, the top wall of said hood inclining downwardly from the forward end thereof to the rear end thereof whereby air entering said hood from said radiator will be drawn by said fan over said pump and will be directed downwardly towardsaid motor.
-. In testimony `whereof I affix my signature.
