Definitions
- the present invention is directed to a process for improving and increasing the resistance of spun threads from artificial silk waste by the provision of thoroughly mixing with the artificial silk waste vegetable fibers which have been previously treated to render their physical properties and chemical composition as nearly identical as possible with the fibers of the silk waste.
- the vegetable fibers are so selected as to be of a thickness more or less corresponding to the thickness of the fibers of the silk waste and these vegetable fibers, in order that their physical and 1 5 chemical properties might be brought into more or less correspondence with the similar properties of the fibers of the silk Waste, are initially mercerized and subjected to tension. Without the provision of mercerization and tension, the vegetable fibers would reduce the silk appearance of the resultant threads and any subsequent dyeing of these threads would prove defective. Furthermore, this previous treatment of the vegetable fibers serves to bring the walls of the intracellular conduits of the fibers closer together and give the fibers an unalterable brilliancy and translucency.
- such fibers will be previously cleaned and ungummed to the state of pure cellulose and such vegetable fibers are formed as ribbons on spinning machines.
- the ribbons are then subjected to' excess tension, washed and dried.
- the vegetable fibers thus provided are then carded and again formed into ribbons and may thereafter be mixed with the silk waste in proportions determined by the desired resistance of the threads resulting from the mixture.
- a process for improving and increasing the resistance of spun threads from artificial silk waste consisting in subjecting Vegetable fibers to a process of mercerization and tension to similarize such fibers in a greater or less degree with the fibers of the artificial silk waste, and then mixing such fibers of artificial silk waste and the mercerized tensioned vegetable fibers.

PROCESS OF INCREASING AND IMPROVING THE RESISTANCE OF SPUN GOODS FROM ARTIFICIAL-SILK WASTE.
No Drawing.
The present invention is directed to a process for improving and increasing the resistance of spun threads from artificial silk waste by the provision of thoroughly mixing with the artificial silk waste vegetable fibers which have been previously treated to render their physical properties and chemical composition as nearly identical as possible with the fibers of the silk waste.
In carrying out the process, the vegetable fibers are so selected as to be of a thickness more or less corresponding to the thickness of the fibers of the silk waste and these vegetable fibers, in order that their physical and 1 5 chemical properties might be brought into more or less correspondence with the similar properties of the fibers of the silk Waste, are initially mercerized and subjected to tension.
Application filed March 2, 1927. Serial No. 172,217.
In the treatment of the vegetable fibers, such fibers will be previously cleaned and ungummed to the state of pure cellulose and such vegetable fibers are formed as ribbons on spinning machines. The ribbons are then subjected to' excess tension, washed and dried. The vegetable fibers thus provided are then carded and again formed into ribbons and may thereafter be mixed with the silk waste in proportions determined by the desired resistance of the threads resulting from the mixture.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A process for improving and increasing the resistance of spun threads from artificial silk waste, consisting in subjecting Vegetable fibers to a process of mercerization and tension to similarize such fibers in a greater or less degree with the fibers of the artificial silk waste, and then mixing such fibers of artificial silk waste and the mercerized tensioned vegetable fibers.
\ In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH ALEXIS GRAND.
