Appneeaen med December es, 192e. serieu Ne. 156,662, emi in Greeeisritain November a, 192e.
This invention relates to draft, dust weather -excluders (hereinafter for `brevity acts asa fulcrum, by means provi ed on the hinged member.
According lto this invention the means onthe hinged member formoving the draftexcluding memberinto its Operative position is mounted on the free ed e of the hinged member instead of on Vthe ingededge. In this way the `draft-excluding member is lowered into its inoperative position immediately thehinged member begins to open and y is moreover not raised into 1ts operative position untilthe hinged member is nearly` shut, which is particularly useful in its application to hinged members `where the draft-excluding membermi htbe otherwise damaged by being subjecte tolpressureby a moving object or a personsfoot, when 1n its raised or partially raisedposition. The
said means comprises a member so shaped as 80 to engage under and gradually lift or lower the draft-excluding member as the hinged member closes or opens respectively. two opposite edges of the said member may be both shaped in the manner specified so4 that it lcan be applied to either right hand or left hand hinged members.
In addition, a flat member` adapted to be secured to the front of the hinged member and to project along the whole length` thereof is rovided, this member extending downward y so as to overhang the dravft-exclud ing member when the latter isin its operative position. This serves to prevent any rain or draft from passing behind the top of the draft-excluding member.
Referring to the drawings V:V
Fig. 1 is a front view of aportion of the hinged member showing the excluder applied thereto. l
Fig. 2 is a section on line II-II inFigrl.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental plan view.
In the constructionillustrated `the draftexcluding member 1 consists ofa long, .flat metallic strip, which is folded over upon itself (see Fig. 2). Near its extremity, the
upperY foldedfover portion of said member"` i (.consldered when the latter is in its inoperal tiveor substantially horizontal posltion v shownin dotted lines" in Fig. 2) is curve ,y j outward at 1a away from the bottom portion yo0. y
lb of the member. This may be formed b l rolling the strip to the requlred section.
,long metallic strip, or plate 2, (hereinafter -called sill plate) is secured on the top of thesill of the hinged member, partly at the outsideand partly below the latter, said sill plate being formed with upwardly projecting flanges 2a and 2b, the said sill plate being` of channel shape. j
he draft-excluding member is loosely ar- 7o ranged in the sill plate between the flanges l thereof, the edge of the lower `folded-over portion lb of said member bearing lagainst y the inside of the outermost flange 2b on the sill plate `and the curved part of the upper `I5` i i folded-over portion l* of said member extending around the, edge of theoutermost flangeon the sill plate. The curvature of the part l is such that italwa s maintains contact Withthe edge of the ange 2b and B0 when in its horizontal position, shown in dotted lines, it is just flush with the front` of this sill plate. The edges of the draftexcluding member act as a loose hinge therefor. r Il y The member (hereinafter referred to as operating late) provided `on the hinged member 4 or movmg the draft-excluding member into its operative position comprises a substantially rectangular plate 5` having o0 apertures for screws 6 `by which it is secured on the ed e of the hin ed member. This operating p ate is provide at its lower front edge with anfinwardl curved recess 5a so shaped as to provide a s arp projection o5 5* at the lower corner of the operating plate. l Preferably this operating plate is provided with such recesses on oplposite edges thereof (as shown in Fig. 2) so t at it can be applied to left or right hand hinged members. The lower part of the hingedmember is preferably cut away so that the plate is mounted in a counter-sunk position` thereon and in a position in which it extends below the hinged member. hinged member (hereinafter called a fberge plate) is flat and is also fixed by screws 9 to the front of the hinged member and extends across the whole width thereof."-
In order toA allow the Operating member to 11e The front plate 8 on the los all' be raised into its operative position when the hinged member is nearly closed and lowered into its inoperative position immediately the hinged member beings to open, the
i frontlower edge of the hingedmember must be cut away on a curve as indicated at 7,
VFigs. l and 2, for the whole width thereof.
The berge plate 8 is adapted toextend below the cut away portion of the hinged member so as to screen it and also to overhang `the draft-excluding member when the latter is in its operativek position.
The operating plate on the hinged member is as previously stated located upon the free vertical edge thereof and projects downwardly below thehinged member, the sill plate and/or the sill being slotted or cut away at l() so as to provide a passage Jfor the operating plate. h I
When the hinged' member 1s being closed, the operating plate thereon contacts with the innermost longitudinal edge of the draft-ex- Y cluding member, turning the latter upward about the longitudinal edge of thev bottom folded-over portion of said draft-excluding member, said edge bearing against and hinging on the outermost flange oi' the sill member. When the hinged member is fully closed, the draft-excluding member is inclined' thereto, and thus covers the aperture between the bottom of the hinged member and the top ot the sill.' Moreover, when said draft-excluding member is being turned upward, the outwardly projecting part of the upper folded-over portion Vthereoil moves around the adjacent flange of the sill member, its inner tace contacting with the top of said flange when the draft-excluding member is in its fully inclined, or operative, position. baclr ot the draft-excluding member, drafts, dust and rain have first to pass the additional draft-excluding meansA formed by the contacting ilange and the curved part on the upper folded-over portion of the draft-ex? cluding member. lt will be obvious that the said curvedV part effectively screens the loose joint between the ulcrumed edge of the portion 1b and the sill.
In addition, as the berge plate overhangs the upper edge of the excluding member, this will prevent drafts, dust and rain from passing between the upper edge of the draftexcluding member and the hinged member and thereby serves as supplementary draftexcluding means.
ln a vmodied construction, the silll member is made from a flat, metallic strip which is folded back upon itself to form the spaced,
:upstanding flanges at the outermost longitudinal edge of the member. Two additional drait-excluding means are thus provided by this construction; one being formed by the contact of the inner face of said outwardly and forwardly projecting part onthe rlhus, in order to penetrate to the draft-excluding member With the innermost flange of the member on the sill, and the other by the Contact o the longitudinal edge of said outwardly and-,forwardly projecting part and the, inner tace ot the outermost flange of the member on the sill.
My improved weather-excludingdevice is particularly easy to manufacture and fit. The member can be secured to 'any existing door sill by a few screwsand it is then only Ynecessary to arrange-theV draft-excluding member loosely in said member. The devicev is also very elhcient in action, owing to the 'Y provision thereby of one, or more supplementary draft-excluding meansas described;-
