Description

Feb. 14, 1928. 1,659,338 F. A. TURNER PRESSED METAL WHEEL Filed Nov. 9, 1927 Till Patented 1e,
FORREST A. TURNER, OF ANSON, TEXAS.
PRESSED-I /IETAL 'VVHEEL,
Application filed November 9, 192?.
This invention relates to wheels designed chiefly for motor vehicles and supplles an article of the nature atoresaid which is light, s 'ong. durable andeconomical in manutur The invention provides an essentially :ictal wheel which ma be pressed or 'ly torn'ied, the spoke members being ireted, or otherwise secured to the ot the wheel.
fdhile th drawing illustrates a preterred embcdin'ient oi? the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and such other changes in riva minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as cla'ined, without departing from the spirit thereoit'.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereoit', reference is to be had to the ,fOllOWlng description and the drawing hereto attz'zched in which,
Figure l is a side View ot a vehicle wheel embtidying the invention, a portion of the band or rim being broken away.
Figure 2 an enlarged sectional View on the line of Figure l.
Fixture 8 is a. perspective VlW of one of the spoke members.
l ieure l is a detail view of a portion of the body of the wheel showing an integral spoke section. N
Figure 5 is 2 detail sectlonal View on the line 55 of Figure 1. I
Corresponding and like parts are reterred to in the following description and designated in theseveral views ot the drawing by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the body of the wheel which (:01 s of a disk of sheet metal of determine e size depending upon the nature of the wheel. The body 1 is provided about its outer edge with irojections 2 which torn: ou er sections oi the spokes. The projections 2 LllEPOSGd in the plane thereot. The central portion of the body 1 is cut away to provide iin opening 3 tor the reception of a hub or any dctern'iinate make or construction depending upon the limsh or the wheel.
Spoke members 4- are provided and are attached to the body 1 and parts 2 in any preferred way, as by welding riyeting, or in a mannerbest adapted to existmg condii in the same form a part of the body and are Serial No. 232,132.
tions. The spokes 4 are hollow and taper throughout their length, as indicated most clearly in Figure S3. The spokes are closed upon three sides and are arranged with the open side adjacent the body 1 and projec tions 2. The spokes are reverscly curved, being oft OJG. outline in the direct-ion of their lengtl'i. Lugs 5 are formed at the outer end of the spokes and are adapted to pass through openings tormed in the rim 6 which is secured in place by upsetting the projecting ends of the lugs, as indicated most clearly in Figure 2. The spokes are of a length to extend from a point adjacent the opening .3 to the inner side of the rim 6, 't being understood that the inner side oi the wheels is flat, whereas the spokes appear upon the outer side to present a finish. It obserred that the wheels are provided in rights and lofts so that the spokes may curve direction and appear upon the outer side of the wheel.
hen the band or rim 6 consists of an integral annulus the parts are assembled preliminary to securing the spokes to the body 01' the wheel, so that the lugs 5 may be passed through the openings formed in the rim for their reception.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
l. A metal wheel consisting of a flat body. spokes placed against a side of the body and secured thereto, and having their outer ends projecting some distance beyond the outer edge of the main portion of the body, and a rim connecting the projecting ends of the spokes.
9. A metal wheel comprising a metal disc having projections about the outer edge and in the plane of the disc, hollow spoke members arranged with their hollow sides against the disc and the projections thereof to which they are attached, and a rim connecting the projec .ing end of the spokes.
3. A metal wheel comprising a disc having projections about its outer edge, and in the plane of the disc, holiow spokes reversely curved and tapering throughout their length and arranged with the hollow side ildjtl cent the disc and the projections thereof, said spokes having integral lugs at their outer ends, and a rim secured to the projecting ends of the spokes by means of said lugs.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
