RAIL JOINT.
Application filed March 7, 1927. Serial No. 173,566.
The present .invention relates to improve ments in rail joints and has for its primary object to provide a joint structure which will durably secure the meeting ends of rails. j
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rail joint structure embodying means for firmly securing the same upon the rail ties.
Another object of the invention is the irovision of rail joint embodying a pair of complementary plates formed with reinforcing connecting brackets adapted to maintain the rails in longitudinal alignl ment. i j
Still another' object of the invention is the provision of a rail joint of the above charact-er which is durable in construction and which can be conveniently connected in association with the rails and which will be efficient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
ln the accompanying drawing forming' a part of this specification and in which like reference characters are employed to designate correspondingparts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of'my improved rail joint construction shown operatively connected with the meeting ends of railroad rails.
Figure a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line lfd of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral generally designates the end portions of a pair of rail sections, 'the meeting ends being formed to provide transverse abutting connections. The rails 1() embody vertical web portions 11, base flanges 12 and rail heads 13, and are of standard construction. i
The primary feature of the present invention is to provide means for securely connecting the abutting ends of the rail sections to prevent longitudinal or lateral displacement. With this in mind, my improved rail joint embodies a pair of complementary sections 14, each section comprising a` longitudinal rectangular shapedsi de plate 15 adapted to be arranged in vertical position against the rail web 11 and formed with a bottom flange 16 projecting outwardly at an angular inclination and adapted to rest upon the upper face of the rail flange. `The side plates 15 are of arcuate cross sectional design and their upper and lower edges bear against the rail web as at 17 and maintain the central portion of the side plates 15 separated therefrom. `Each of the side plates 15 is formed with a plurality, preferably siinof transverselyaligned openings, i
also aligning with openings formed in the meeting ends of the rail, sections 10 and through which bolts 18 are positioned.
Formed on each of the plates 15 and spaced evenly from the ends thereof are three reinforcing brackets 19 embodying angular shaped bars formed integral with the plate arranged in vertical positions and provided with transversely extending sleeves 2O formed on the lower end of the bracket and spaced below the plate flanges 16. The sleeves 2O areformed to be tightly fitted against the under side of theg rail flange 12, the said sleeves being formed with longitudinal bores arranged in transverse alinement through which are extended bolts 21 to provide an auxiliary connection for the plates. j i j Formed in spaced positions on the flanges 16 of the side plates are -a plurality, in the resent instance four, inverted U-shaped pockets 22 arranged in laterally opposed p0- sitions on the plates. These pockets are engageable with clamping members embodying4 a transversely extending base plate 23 adapted to extendbelow the lail flange hav- `ing an angular flange engaging lug 24 formed on one end and provided with an extension 25. Detachably engageable with the opposite end of the base plate 28 is a rail bracket 26` comprising an angular lug 27 and a connecting plate 28 having an aperture adapted to align with a similar aperture formed inthe end of the base plate. The angular lugs2/l and 27 are arrangedto be tightly tted over the outer edges of the flanges 16 and are slidably fitted in the pockets 22 formed thereon. The plates 23 and 28 are provided with suitable apertures to receive fastening members such as the usual spikes which may be driven into the rail ties in the usual manner.
From the foregoing` description and the drawing, it will be readily noted that the present invention presents an exceedingly durable and efficient joint structure adapted to securely tasten the meeting ends et the rail sections so as to eliminate the danger ot' separation or displacement. The complementary joint sections are designed so as to be quickly and conveniently secured in association with the meeting ends ot' the rails and formed to permit rapid disconnection when necessary.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example ot' the same and that various changes `as to the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
ns Will be readily seen froinFigures l and 4 of the drawing', the clamp members 23 are adapted to be securely fastened to the cross ties of the railway track thus insuring the positive positioning of the structure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
