UNITED STATES PATENT ovricii,
ALBERT C. LINK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
GOLF CLUB.
Application filed October 22, 1927. Serial No. 227,948.
'lhird, to provide an improved golf clubhead having an improved striking face in which the securing means are entirely concealed and at the same time the face or impact members are securely retained.
Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will appear from the detailed description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodi ment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. l is a front perspective view of a golf club embodying the features of my invention Fig. 2is a section from front to rear on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentaryperspective view showing the recessed head member formed to receive the striking face or impact members. l
Figs. l, 5 and 6 are perspective views of three impact members in disassembled re lation.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the central impact member which is also adapted as an attaching member, prior to the finishing or dressing of the face thereof when assembled on the head.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the seve al views.
Referring to the drawings, the head 1 is preferably formed of wood, its face 2 having a tapered recess 3therein, the recess extending from top to bottom of the head. Within this recess is fitted a tapered impact member i preferably of hard fibre or other suitable non-metallic material, this impact member seating against the bottom of the recess and fitting the inclined edges thereof.
The impact member 4 has a central counterbored hole 5 therein in which is fitted the annular impact member 6 of metal, this impact member 6 being externally shouldered. to lit the counterbored hole 5.
The impact member 6 has a tapered bore 7 ters Patent, is:
into which is titted the tapered bushingdike impact member 8 which is preferably of the same material as the impact member it.
lhe impact member 8 has a counterbored hole 9 therein to receive the centralfillister screw 10, this screw constituting the central impact member and also an attaching means, clamping the member 8 in position, the member 8 owing to its taper, its fitting within the tapered bore of the member 6, clamping the member 6 in place, and the member 6 owing to shouldered engagement with the member/l, in turn serves as a clamping means for the member 4-,so that all of the impact memhers are secured by the single member l0 with its screw extension 11. v
After the parts are completely assembled,
the head is finished by grinding off the faces of the members so that they are coincident r complementary with each other and with the face 2 of the head. 1 Golf clubs embodying my improvements are highly desirable from the standpoint of use and are attractivein appearance, the securing means for the striking or impact members being entirely concealed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by In a golf club, the combination of a head member of wood having a striking face with an upwardly tapered recess therein, an upwardly tapered impact member of fibre fitting within said recess of said head member and having a central shouldered. opening therein, a metallic impact member fitting in said shouldered opening to seat on said head member and having a tapered hole therein. an impact member of fibre fitting in said metallic impact member to seat on said head member and having a shouldered central hole therein, and an attaching member fitting in said last mentioned impact member and having threaded engagement with said head, the faces of the said impact members being coincident.
52. In a golf club, the combination of a non metallic head member having a striking face with a recess therein, a non-metallic impact member fitting within said recess of said head member and having a central shouldered opening therein, a metallic impact member fitting in said shouldered opening to seat on said head member and having a tapered hole therein, a n0n-metallic impact member fitting in said metallic impact memtill her to seat on said head member and having a shouldered central hole therein, and an attaching member fitting in said last men tioned impact member and having a securing prone" engaging: with said head member. the -faces of the said impact members being eoni'ormed to complement each other. I
3. In a golf club, the combination of a nonlillit' ttllll. he; l member provided with a striklag Face having a tapered recess therein. a non-nwtallie tapered impact member fitting within said recess and having a central v connterliored hole therein. an annular metallic impact member externally shouldered to engage .iid connterbored hole and internally tapered, a tapered non-metallic impact member fitting in said annular member and hay mg a central connterbored hole. and a shouldered central impact member having a screw extension engaging said head member whereby the several impact members are clamped together and secured to said head. the faces of the said impact members being coincident with the etriliinc face of the head member.
-l-. In a golf club. the combination of a nonmetallic head member provided with astrikingface having'a recess therein, a non metallie impact member tittingwithin said recess and having a. central counterbored hole therein. an annular metallic impact member externally shouldered to engage said counterbored hole and internally tapered, a tapered non-metallic impact member fittingin said annular member and having a central counterbored hole, and a. shouldered central impact member having an extension engaging said head member whereby the several impact members are clampedtogether and secured to said head, the faces of the said impact members being complementary to each other and to the striking face of the head member.
In a golf club, the combination of a nonmetallic head member provided with a strihing face having an upwardly tapered recess therein. a tapered non-metallic face n'lelnber fitting in said recess and having a central opening therein, and a plurality of complementary metallic and non-metallic face members arranged in concentric relation in said opening and having coengagingr clamping engagen'ient, the inner face member constituting an attaching member engaging said head member.
(.3. In a golf club, the combination ol a head member having a rec in its striking face. a :lace member littinn' in said recess and having a central opening therein, and a pinrality of complementary metallic and 11onmetallic n'iembers arranged in concentric relation in said opening and having coengage inn clamping engagement, the inner member constitutingan attachimz member engaging said head member.
T. in a golf club. the combination of a head member having a recess in its 't'acc, and a striking: face comprising a plurality oi have members dispoeed in said recess in nestle; relation one within the other. the L'entral member having an extension engaging th .illtltl member. each face member conetitntinr a clamping means for its adjacent. surroundinn member. the alternate members being of non-metal] its material.
8. in a colt club, the cmnbination ot a head member having a recess in it face. and a striking: face com irisingg a plurality of face membersdisposed in said recess in concentric relation one within the other, the central member hariiig an extension engaging the head men'iber, each face member constituting a clamping means for its adjacent snrronnsh inn member.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
