As shown for preventingP the-piston from violently strikingT the cylinder heads ot the feed cylinder, the `front cylinder head is provided with apin or other projection 141 which is adapted to enter the interior of the tube 25 when the piston approaches the front end of the cylinder. The diameter lof the pin is slightly less than that of the interior ot the tube in order that it may restrict but not entirely close ott' communication between the interior of the tube and the endy of the cylinder when the piston is at its extreme forward end. Communication between the outer tube ot the piston rod and the rear end of the cylinder is provided by a passage 143 and a restricted passage 145. 1When the piston yapproaches the rearward end of its stroke, the portion of the tube having.;- the passage 143 enters the bore ot the front cylinder head which closes said passage and leaves open only the restricted passage 145. lt will be noted bv these means that l have provided for restricting the exhaust from each cylinder end when the piston approaches the correspondingv cylinder head but have not prevented the admission of tluid to such end for moving the piston away from the cylinder head.

A machine of the character described having, in combination, a percussive tool, feeding means therefor comprising a cylinder and piston, said cylinder slidably supporting said percussive tool, connecting means between said piston and percussive tool comprising a hollow piston rod having a straight and connected transverse conduit for conducting motive fluid to said cylinder at one side of said piston, and a flexible tube inserted in said rod and passing through said conduit for conducting motive fluid to said cylinder at the opposite side of said piston. said tube bearing against the Walls of said transverse conduit.

A machine of the character described having, in combination, a percussive tool, feeding means therefor comprising a cylinder and piston, a hollow piston rod connecting said piston with said percussive tool` said rod having a straight and connected transverse conduit, a tube inserted into the conduit of said rod, said tube having a `rigid portion in the straight portion of' said rod, and a flexible portion in the transverse portion of said rod bearing against the Walls ot' said transverse portion.
7. A machine of the character described having, in combination, a percussive tool, feeding meanstherefor comprising a stationary cylinder' and movable piston, said percussive tool being offset relative to said cylinder with their axial lines parallel, a
.bent piston rod connecting said percussive tool and piston, a tube extending through said rod, said tube having a flexible portion for passing it through the bend of' said rod and connections for conducting motive fluid to said cylinder by Way of' said tube.

In a machine of the character described, a percussive tool, means for moving said tool relative to the work comprising a cylinder and piston, a hollow substantially U- shaped piston rod extending through the rear end of said cylinder and connecting said piston to said tool, said rod being in fluid communication with one end of' said cylinder, a tube in fluid communication with the other end of said cylinder and located interiorly of' said rod, said tube having a flexible portion passing through the bend of said U- shaped rod and bearing against the walls of said bend.

A machine ot' the character described having, in combination, a percussive tool, feeding means therefor comprising a cylinder and piston, said percussive tool being slidably supported in side by side relation with said cylinder, a piston rod formed of a tube bent to a substantially U-shape extending through the rear end of said cylinder and being in huid communication with one end of said cylinder, and a flexible tube carried interiorly of said rod adapted to conform to said bend when inserted and forced through said rod said tube being in fluid communication with the opposite end of said cylinder.

A machine of the character described having, in combination, a percussive tool, feeding means therefor comprising a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder', a hollow piston rod secured to said piston and opening through one side thereof, an open ended tube closing the open en'd of said rod from communication with said cylinder, said tube Communicating with said cylinder at said side of said piston, means placing said rod in communication with said cylinder at the opposite side of said piston, and means for connecting said rod and tube to a source ot vmotive fluid.

15. ln a .machine of the character described, a. drill operating device, a guide for said device, fluid operated feeding means for moving said device along said ide, said feeding means comprising a stationary cylinder member and a movable piston member, a hollow substantially U-shaped piston rod projectim; through the rear end of said cylinder and being in duid communication therewith, means independent of said rod for connecting said device to said guide, a valve casing connecting the end of said rod to the rearward end of said device, and a valve carried by saidV casing for controlling the admission and exhaust of motive duid to and from said rod for actuation of said piston.
16. ln a machine' of the character described, a drill operating device, a guide for said device, fluid operated feeding means for moving said device along said guide, said feeding means comprising a stationary cylinder member and a piston member, a hollow substantially ltl-shaped piston rod projecting through the rear end of said cylinder and being in fluid communication therewith, a tube in said rod extending substantially the full length thereof, said tube being in duid communication with the opposite end of said cylinder, a connection between said rod and the rearward end of said device, and a valve carried by said connection for controlling the admission and exhaust of motive duid to said rod and tube for actuation of said piston. v M

A rock drill having, in combination, a hammer drill comprising a casing having provision for carrying a forwardly rejecting drill steel, a feed cylinder, a fee piston, means formin a feed piston rod, nmeans other than said rod for operatively slidably connecting said casing and cylinder in side by side relation, said means forming said rod having a portion project-ing into the rear end of said cylinder and having a return portion spaced from the first mentioned portion, said return portion bein operatively connected to. said casing and eing1 adapted to lie 4at the same side of said cylinder as said casing, and means for controlling the feeding of said hammer drill comprising a pairof motive duid conducting conduits in that portion of said means forming said rod which projects into said cylinder, said conduits bein respectively in communication with said cy inder at opposite sides of said piston.

A roclr drill having, in combination, a hammerdrill comprising a casing having provision for carrying a forwardly projecting drill steel, a feed cylinder, afeed piston, a feed piston rod having a substantially U- shapc, one leg of said-U projecting into the rear end of saidcylinder and being connected to said piston, the other leg ot said ti be-l ing operatively connected tosaid drill and being adapted to lie at the same side of said cylinder as said drill, means other than said rod for operatively slidably connecting said llO cylinder and drill in side by side relation, and means for controlling the feeding of said drill comprising a pair of motive fluid conducting conduits formed in that leg of said rod which projects into said cylinder, said conduits respectively communicating with said cylinder at opposite sides of said piston.

A drilling machine having,in combination, a feed cylinder and a percussive tool slidably and nonrotatably connected in side by side relation for relative longitudinal movement, means providing a feed piston* maaien ton, means for admitting motive fluid to said hollow portion and said tube for electing actuation of said feed piston.

A rock drill having, 1n combination, a percussivetool having revision for carrying a forwardly projecting drill steel, feeding means for said tool comprising a feed cylinder and means providing a feed iston and feed piston rod, said rod beine' su stantially in the form of a U-shaped tu ie having one leg projectinfr into the rearward end of said cylinder and the other leg operatively connected to said tool, passage means placing the interior ol' said rod in fluid communication with said cylinder at one side of said piston, a' tube in said rod in fiuid communication with said cylinder at the opposite side of said piston, means for supplying motive fluid to said tube and rod for effecting actuation of said feeding means, and means independent of said rod for slidably connecting said cylinder and tool.
